that's not what caused the explosion. fermentation occurred over a long time with soil pressure stabilizing the bottle. when he picked it up it disturbed the fluid releasing carbonation.

Yeah. The pressure of the soil was the only thing holding the bottle together. And the stability was keeping the pressure from agitating. He picked it up and shook it, that's how you make it go boom.

@@nightmansmemo I wouldn't; not from the outside factors alone, but also the fact that when wine or beer isn't stored properly; it can't turn poisonous. That's why wine cellars aren't just holes in the ground with air conditioners over them. A wine company in California did a mini documentary about it. Should be able to find it on youtube.

Looks like you had the perfect storm with that bottle. You had mentioned the ground water was cold and that and the surrounding soil was probably keeping it in balance. No soil pressure, cold bottle, sudden introduction of warm air and warm hands....grenade time!! Glad you were not hurt, too bad you lost that unique bottle. I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of railroaders, the amount of liquor bottles you found does not surprise me one bit!!

I have seen quite a few of your videos and am always waiting for the treasure. I lived on a sailboat sailing around half the world for 18 years and did some diving in a few South Pacific harbours. Suva Fiji was our favorite We found bottles, pipes, dishes, etc from all the old ships that sailed around in the 1800 = 1900s Most of my bottles are in my basement and I need to pass them on . Do you know of any museum that would be interested? I wonder what you do with all your nice finds. Many of us would like to know what you do with them. Do you have any videos of the bottles cleaned and maybe categorized? Just so interesting. In any case, thank you for taking us on your digs.

If I had to speculate as to why the bottle exploded I would say it was due to the pressure inside the bottle due to the fermentation of the wine exceeding the bottles' wall strength and while it was underground it had sufficient external pressure on the outside of the bottle to counter the internal pressure. Once you remove it and it no longer had the external pressure on it and you shook it releasing more of the CO2 that was suspended in the wine, the internal pressure exceed the bottles' wall strength and it blew up. Yes you are very lucky!

I'm more & more convinced of something I'd previously thought: people in the past went thru life (if they could afford it) in a slight alcoholic haze. The vast majority of bottles you pull tend to be liquor, beer & patent medicine/prescription. Given that many medicines had high alcohol volumes as well as marijuana, cocaine and opium, people just must have been some defintion of "high" an awful lot of the time. You can see why prohibition came to be approved - the more-or-less sober folks must have decided they didn't want to put up with all the definitely not sober folks. I believe the free-from-doctor's prescription drugs thing disappeared around the same time as prohibition - cocaine was removed from Coca-Cola, opium dens closed down, marijuana made illegal - oh! And heroin was no longer freely available. Yep, people were seriously buzzed in the past...

humanity has been buzzed since time began, it is built into the human DNA to experiment with plants or anything else they came across. Now we have AI and video games with eatables . Not saying it is good but it is not going to stop anytime soon unless of course they get their wish and depopulation us all.

I watched a couple of your videos today for the first time. Pretty neat. What impresses me most is your seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of old bottles and glassware. I was wondering if you might do a video just going through your collection and talking about the different types of bottles, what they were used for and how they were made through history. I find this sort of thing interesting too. Where do you look up these old bottles? How did you learn about this subject? Do you sell them? Do you have some sort of museum? I'm glad to see young people interested in history.

About an hour later I heard a click, then another. Looked around and did😊nt see anything. Went to pee and BAM. Came back into the room to find glass everywhere. All that was left was the lip and the base...Watching your bottle explode was a trigger for my memory. Agreed. You are one luck SOB. Very bountiful hoard...nice.

Love this channel, brings back memories of my family digging up New England lol, we had 56,000 bottles in our collection, most were glass blown from the late 1700 to 1800 hundreds lots of backed clay bottles, use to go looking for old foundations then head for there bumps to find the good stuff, even some old stone walls would hide coins so they wouldn’t get robbed, love the channel, we even tunneled under an old dump road from the 1870s where the city’s outlawed dumping in the back yards, the bump had been closed for over 100 years till we found it in the early 1970s it looks like a war zone after everyone else started catching on lol Norwich ct was a great place for digging, really old town from like the 1640s check it out if your near there, I’ll tell you where to go looking 👍🏼

It's pits like this that make you realize, prohibition likely saved more of the common man from extreme whiskey use! That pit was so deep that even the crap was preserved! You had already earned my respect but, you did it doubly on this one!!

Reminds me of making wine in prison. We would use an empty bunk and the locker in it. It was a dormitory style prison with office cubicle walls around 5ft tall. We took turns “burping” the bag because it filled with gas as it fermented. One day, we’re playing cards in the day room…and BOOM. I instantly knew what it was. The smell filled the dorm. The person who’s turn it was to burp the bag that day, had not done it and the bag blew up. It warped the locker to where the door wouldn’t close after. Lol… I would imagine something about the temp change made that bottle explode. Rotting fruit and or bread creates lots of gas.
