I was also an Ammo Tech Officer and agree that Mark gives a good description.. A couple of points however I would want to pick up on.. Firstly the issue over the "all burned" point. Having unburned powder when the bullet exits the barrel is not the cause of muzzle flash, that is caused by hot carbon monoxide (a by product) igniting on contact with oxygen in the air. The result of having unburned powder is that the muzzle velocity becomes inconsistent leading to vertical stringing at the target end. Ideally all the propellent should be burned about 2/3 up the barrel to allow for temperature variations on the burning rate. Secondly, comparing powder burning rates to octane rating is incorrect. Octane rating is about detonation resistance. High octane fuel will not detonate (pinking or knocking) in a high compression engine. Theoretically this is also a possibility in a gun, but is only thought to be a risk with too small loads of too slow powder. I would stay well away from this comparison! You do not want propellent to detonate.. trust me!

Thanks Mark for explaining "Powder Ignition" and "Burn Duration Characteristics". Like you I have noticed "Better" to "Great" accuracy with the 210M in my 300 Win Mag, but work up a "Mag primer" load for cold weather hunting conditions. Good job!

I just found this video, & I want to say thank you I’m using a 38 special +P in a 2 inch barrel, that’s 1 extreme. The other is a Marlin with a 16 inch barrel, from 1 extreme to the other. What works in the 1 won’t work in the other. Thank you for the video. Thank you Sir & Ma’am

I don't remember the threshold but essentially if you have i think its 50gr or better of powder to burn you want a magnum primer otherwise normal primers are the deal

Very useful information. From basic physics, I understand the area under the pressure curve as the bullet moves down the barrel is the energy you get. E=FD. I'm working up a load in 243 Winchester. I have Federal #215M primers and Alliant Reloader 16 to push 105gr Nosler RDF noses. I've also got Bergers of the same weight, both target and VLD. I'm on a 20" barrel with "heavy contour". 500 meters is my maximum range due to my location. So here's hoping! Primers are impossible to find in my area at this time. So I've got what I've got.

I initially figured out about burn rates after I purchased my first chronograph. Interestingly, I didn't use it for rifles but, for shotguns as I was wondering how much barrel length affected the speed of the various loads as well as if I could get the same speeds for different lengths. I was able to discover that anything longer than 28" didn't increase velocity which I found amusing when I went goose hunting and saw some guys shooting 36" barreled, bolt action shotguns. They told me that they were able to kill geese at over 100 yards but, I don't think they knew how to tell distance.

When I used small rifle primer in 6.5 Creedmoor 140-grain bullets with IMR 4064, I would get hang fires. After I switched to use Magnum Small Rifle primers, no more hang fires. This is validated by other reloaders as well, very interesting.

Very interesting I wonder if regular large rifle primers from 1:8.5 or 1:9 twist 24-26" 300 prc barrel, shooting 178 grain ELDX with faster powders will give me issues vs a 30 inch barrel shooting 220 eld-m or 240 grain match kings using a slower powder like rl26. At any rate I am happy to hear I can use my large rifle primers under standard or warmer atmospheric conditions. Fascinating how much there is to play with. At least I get some time until winter months to source magnum primers. Should have picked up those 215m off the shelf when I had the chance. 😂

Buy QuickLoad software for your computer to learn in-depth what Mark explained. It will change your entire perspective on reloading. You can compute your own loads and predict velocities and pressures extremely accurately without firing a round. It’s amazing. You will know if the powder burns completely for your gun’s barrel length. Select the best powder for short or long barrels.

What happens if you use a magnum primer in a non magnum case? I accidentally primed some .308 cases with CCI 250 magnum instead of the CCI 200 large rifle primers in a few of a large lot .....didn't notice a difference in seating them but realized a box (100) was mixed in... the lot was 1000 after I was finished... also what's the difference in Bench rest primers vs regular 🤔 ?
@markandsamafterwork

As said, just a more powerful primer, so load pressure will increase a little, as for match v regular, not much, just a little more quality control, FYI, if you are chasing more info than on the videos, consider becoming a member, we help those that help, Cheers
