Oh, this is a nice contrast to the ideas from my video about Kirk being a multipotentialite! Considering his childhood and having many siblings, it's totally understandable why he would put so much effort into proving himself to the town! Especially if he had some siblings that outshined him at home.

I was thinking it would be also kind of parallel to your video. I also think that he is a multipotentialite, even if perhaps his backstory was the initial driving force. I was going to mention your video in this one but then as I reached the end of recording it, I completely forgot. :( Your video was truly excellent.

To me, Kirk feels like a cartoon character (Looney Tunes especially), not just because of his personal traits, but also because of his physical abilities. Like he is badly injured in an episode and then completely healthy in the next or even during the same one

It can be both, he can be neurodivergent AND be trying to reclaim childhood trauma (feeling neglected at home). I love Kirk. I forgive the show runners for the jarring inconsistencies in the first season, it’s clear they didn’t plan his character but quickly saw his value and I’m glad they did.

After watching this, I think Kirk was neglected (or much likely abandoned) by his father. I think he made up the story about the basket, his mother actually seems overbearing not neglectful. That's probably why he wants Taylor's respect so much.

11:24. Only disagreement - I think Kirk tries to buy the Twickham house because he sees what Luke wants for Lorelei and doesn’t want to outdone by another ‘sibling’. He might have gotten anxious because Luke has finally gotten this about his life together before Kirk could do that for himself. It’s a little pettiness between someone he’s drawn close to.

The fact that this video begins with Kirk as the lady of the night in the revolutionary war re-enactment, saying what is possibly the single greatest sentence in that episode, makes this the best GG video on KZfaq forever and always. (Slight) Hyperbole aside, I wasn't aware that there were some fans who don't like Kirk or found him irrelevant compared to the other main characters. I always saw Kirk as the one who really embodied Stars Hollow in its quirkiness and its commitment to tradition, as we can see in the town events/holidays. However funny or strange they may seem, they're still taken pretty seriously. It's not unlike how seriously Kirk takes his (multiple) jobs and business ventures (#methodactor). The fact that it's Kirk that's set up as the spiritual successor to Taylor in the future should, I think, be an example of Kirk being integral to the town's success and its spirit. You can't organize the kinds of events that Stars Hollow hosts without utter commitment and conviction. He can be annoying, but you still love him. That's Kirk. Or is it Stars Hollow...? I really enjoyed this video on Kirk's character and history. I wouldn't have ever considered that Kirk works as hard as he does as a form of seeking some form of validation or attention as a result of a neglectful childhood. But I can see how that can be the case. What always struck me (since it's probably more overt in the show) is how Kirk seems to latch onto Taylor and then Luke as positive male role models in his life. Kirk wants to please Taylor when it comes to showing how responsible he can be, and Kirk trusts Luke almost implicitly, like an older brother. Considering that Kirk's father wasn't in his life and he presumably doesn't have a consistent or supportive relationship with his siblings, perhaps he saw these men as filling some sort of void in his life as present, dependable figures. I love the idea that Kirk does as much for Luke as Luke does for Kirk. It makes their relationship all the more endearing to me. Thank you for making this video! ☺

I believe Kirk screws up on purpose. He likes attention and he's willing to run a car into a diner for it. Also, the thing about being a weirdo is that, yes, people notice you, but they also tend to disregard you. That was something that really bothered me about the revival, actually. It was totally not the town's place to decide that Kirk and Lulu would not make good parents because they are quirky, and to come together to manipulate them out of procreating. If Kirk and Lulu want to have kids, the have the right to have kids. As the video shows, Kirk is quite capable in a lot of ways, and even if he wasn't, so long as he isn't abusive, it's just not other people's business and stinks of eugenics.

You noticed things about him i had kinda missed although most of it i hadn't (because I've paid far too much attention to this show over the years, i guess 😅). I did find myself thinking during some of the Kirk/Luke stuff that season 7 shouldn't count. That the characterization is so different for so many of them once Amy Sherman-Palladino wasn't involved, that idk it’s hard to fully integrate some of that stuff into my mind. Luke doesn't look like Luke to me wearing that black ballcap 😭. Etc. You know. I really loved your observations about Kirk and frugality. Kirk and his presence in Luke's diner. I have 2 theories to explain why Kirk was “Mick” in the beginning either A) since he has 12 siblings it’s possible one of them could look almost identical to him so “Mick” was really just one of his older brothers. Or B) in very Kirk fashion he went through a period of wanting to change his name and so introduced himself as “Mick” for a while before getting bored/giving up since none of the townsfolk who knew him as a child bothered with it. (I imagine Babette getting confused and pestering him about why he wants to be called something else and always forgetting to say the new name) And yes I know his character wasn’t officially fleshed out yet script-wise, this is just what I tell myself for it make sense story-line wise.

I appreciate this video about Kirk. I love Kirk as a character. I personally headcanon him as trans. It explains why he has a few name changes early on. It also helps explain why he is less familiar with dating and why he’s going through a journey of self-discovery, because figuring out his gender identity was just one of his steps of figuring out his personal identity. I also have a sillier concept of Miss Patty being Kirk’s mother, which is why he has such an artistic sensibility and why they are often seen working together.

This was such a great video. For a minute, you actually had me shipping Kirk and Lorelei, which I never thought would happen, so kudos to you. You also made me appreciate Kirk and Luke's friendship (though Luke would shudder before calling it that); some of your points felt like a stretch (I think he genuinely wanted to buy the Twickham house, since he was basically homeless at the time) but overall, you make it clear how much these two men secretly care for and look out for each other. When it comes to inconsistencies, the main thing that coms to mind once Kirk is established as a character is the fact that once he is homeless and living with Lorelei (and other towns people) his night-terrors (which is a real condition) seem to no longer be an issue. Paris mentions him talking in his sleep about dealing blackjack, but that's not the same. Finally, I can't come to a video about Kirk without bringing up my main issue. It's not actually about Kirk himself, but more about how the town treats Kirk. I know you reference it being all in fun and not to be taken too seriously, and sometimes they are even kind to him, but they can also be very cruel to him. The moment that nailed this home for me was in A Year In The Life (I'm not sure if you count that as part of canon, as you didn't reference it in your videos). Lorelei tells Rory that Kirk and Lulu, who at this point have been a stable and loving, if quirky and strange couple for over a decade at this point, were overheard discussing having kids, and the town bought him a pig to stave this off. Yes, Kirk seems okay with having a pig, he loves the pig, and I guess it was enough for him and Lulu to stop discussing kids for now, but who gave the town the right to passive-aggressively tell Kirk and Lulu that they are too "quirky," to be trusted to raise kids. That is not their place, and it's really screwed up when you think about it. Much as I love Gilmore Girls, the town and the protagonists have a sometimes cruel sense of humor, and just a mean edge to them at times, which I attribute to Amy Sherman-Paladino's cruel sense of humor, and he belief that people are born evil and need to have goodness kicked into them (she actually said that in an interview). Anyway, I'd love to get your take on my thoughts on the town's cruelness towards Kirk and whether or not it crosses the line. Again, great video.
@PensiveWhiskers
@PensiveWhiskers 4 ай бұрын
I do think that the town is at times dismissive of Kirk and the town's actions can be cruel (like you said, giving him a pig to discourage him from having kids). I think this was due to the show's treatment of Kirk as pure comic relief rather than a real person. I feel that Kirk was treated more like a sitcom character than a character on a drama show. I know that Gilmore Girls is not squarely classified as a drama show but it's also not exactly a pure comedy. Personally, I am not a fan of treating Kirk in this way. It crosses the line for me but not for the show. This was a creative decision by the writers that doesn't align with my view of characters on this type of show. This is actually one of my quibbles with the show. I have been considering making a video on how sometimes the comedy hinges on scenarios that would actually be upsetting or mean-spirited in real life. I hesitate to call these things out because I feel that it is likely a personal preference. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are not bothered by it. I haven't been mentioning the revival in a lot of my videos. I want to say that it's because I plan on doing a full video on the revival, but the truth is, I get kind of lazy. 😳 I am still planning on doing a video on the revival. The Twickham house theory was totally a stretch on my part. There is a part of me that ships Kirk and Lorelai together. 🤫 Thank you so much for sharing your opinion!

I would watch and possibly comment on both of those videos (the mean-spiritedness of the show one, and the revival one). I loved the show so much growing up, and it broke my heart to have it pointed out to me how cruel the characters sometimes are, and the things that don't age well, but I think I can still love the show and acknowledge it's flaws. You're welcome. Thank you for responding to my opinion (and so quickly too!)@@PensiveWhiskers

IMO, he was the original thirty-something! I think Kirk was a great student at Ms Patty's, has always been slightly different (on the spectrum perhaps) and returned to the town and the million odd jobs after trying to make it in the real world. That would also explain why he's always trying to make those inane short films and acting/singing in town productions.

I appreciate that you don't just take Kirk and his actions as "It's a joke", but consider it as part of the story. In Improv, if there's a joke which doesn't fit with the rest of the story, we call that gagging, and it detracts from the overall experience even if you get short-term laughs. It means there's parts of the story we should ignore and it takes us out of it. So as viewers, if we consider it as part of the comprehensive whole, it creates a better watching experience.

I've heard about that in improv, I've never done it but I've watched improv shows and I am always incredibly impressed by how quickly the actors can play off each other. Thank you for interpreting my narrative in such a positive light. I sometimes think that my videos are too silly since my interpretations go beyond what the writers intended. I'm treating these characters like real people which I know can be a little absurd.
@kcmisulis425
@kcmisulis425 4 ай бұрын
@@PensiveWhiskers Not absurd at all! That's exactly what the writers want you to do. In fact, by accepting the situation, and then psychoanalysing the character, it creates a more cohesive environment to enjoy the show. That's the entire concept of Yes, And. 😁 And you did an excellent job of psychoanalysing the character in a way which fits a cohesive narrative. A narrative which helps me really appreciate Kirk's final scene in the revival where he's proud of the wedding decorations he made for his friends.

The one thing within the show that I was always curious about with regards to Kirk is why Luke never gave him a job working at his diner, we see that Luke is better off when he has someone working for him, it's better for his mental health as well as just making him a happier person so why did he never give Kirk job when Kirk is there all the time, as well as having so many jobs around town, I'd love to see you make a video on that, why didn't Luke hire Kirk?also as someone with a mental disability from birth that gave me a visual and physical disability, I don't see why Kirk can't also be disabled as well as being highly intelligent and capable, unfortunately when it came to shows around the 90s and early 2000s they did a terrible job at depicting both disabled people and LGBT people, this show makes so many jokes about the LGBT community as well as not really highlighting disability at all, as a disabled person I find that to be a real issue so it's my own personal Canon that Kirk does have some sort of hidden disability that makes him more childlike he's just not as developed as other people, mentally he is very capable and very intelligent but when it comes to other things he may not of grown properly because of his disability this is very common I can't think of any specific disability right now and that's okay because when it comes to shows like the Big Bang theory and young Sheldon, Sheldon Cooper is actually a really good example, he is someone who never got diagnosed, someone who is disability was never specified, we know he has one because they bring it up on the show, we just don't know what it is, a lot of people have speculated that he might have autism and OCD, but we can't say for sure and this is something that a lot of shows around this time did, wanting to be more inclusive but doing a really bad job, not wanting to specify what kind of disability people had but still wanting people like me to feel like they were being seen or to make us be able to relate to these characters, I do believe they are doing the same thing with Kirk and whether or not you also agree with him being disabled is fine, it's okay if you disagree, it's just my own personal head canon based on what we know about Kirk, I think it would make perfect sense and doesn't diminish his character at all it doesn't stop him from being incredibly intelligent or stop him from being incredibly capable when getting a job it is also not truly specified whether or not he has 12 brothers and sisters, this could've just been something he said to Jackson to get sympathy or could be something that is true or even just something that was a mistake since his character is very inconsistent, since it's never brought up again and it's made pretty clear that he is an only child just living with his mum at home, that further supports my belief that he is disabled in someway, again hidden disability that we don't know about and that maybe wasn't even tested his mum might know he has one but never actually figured out what it was or just decided not to tell him because she knew he would be capable and raised him to be yes she can be overbearing at times but she clearly really cares about him and is very protective of him, we're not showing this in the show but if you take characters like Sheldon for example from shows like the Big Bang theory and the way that his mom treats him and then look at Kirk as a character in Gilmore and the little information we know about his mum it's pretty easy to draw comparisons between them even if Kirk has a different sort of disability, again this isn't something that is truly specified just something that's pretty common with shows around this time, a lot of shows would poke fun at the LGBT community and we see this with Gilmore girls as well as poke fun at disability trying to be inclusive but not wanting to overly specify a character has a disability just kind of put it in there and see if people pick up on it or not, they could be disabled but they might not be it's not super clear and you can interpret it whatever way you want, as someone who's disabled that's one of the reasons why I liked Kirk he was actually a really good example of disability. Being someone who has a sort of disability that stunts his behaviour, being more childlike, yet still allowing him to be intelligent enough to get a job, this is actually pretty common and there are disabilities like that where people are damaged either by an accident or from birth that does stunt their growth in someways and it's very possible that he has some sort of stunted development issues that have caused him to hold onto certain information and be very capable whilst still needing to be looked after and being a bit more childlike, that also could be why his mum doesn't give him a key to the house or why she doesn't give him a car, maybe he got a license but she just doesn't trust him to have a car it also could be why he lives in the basement, not because he has so many siblings but just simply because of safety reasons, I actually think that makes a lot of sense and again whether you believe he has a disability or not whether you agree with me or not is fine, that's just my own personal head canon and my own personal opinion. I think it makes perfect sense with his character and clears up a lot of things like the way he treats people, how he such a nice guy but has his moments of not being so great, whilst also being very good at all his jobs he takes them all very seriously because he knows how important it is to have them in the first place and you might be wondering if he has a disability then why do the people in stars Hollow let him get a job in the first place, as someone who has a disability and finds it really hard to get a job I think one of the big reasons why is because of stars hollow itself it's a small town and he's growing up with most of these people they've known him since he was little and know they can trust him they've seen him working other jobs around the town and just know he's capable plus they don't care that he's disabled because of how intelligent he is and how hard-working he is, so whether he is or isn't isn't really relevant and at the end of the day what you see is up to interpretation, I personally choose to believe that he has some sort of mental disability that has somewhat stunted him but that doesn't stop him from being the amazing Kirk we know and love. Kirk is truly the heart of stars Hollow, maybe not the height of Gilmore girls but definitely the heart of stars Hollow. He is a very important character and while some of the other characters in the show may not love him and while some of the people in the comments may not love him, I love him just for who he is. Also I find it very interesting that Taylor is someone he tries to get respect from, even though it's shown by Taylor that he doesn't really care about Kirk at least not in the same way as the characters like Lorelai do since again him being disabled would make perfect sense with why she is so nice to him and let him down gently or is caring towards him even Luke respects Kirks opinion and does care about him which we said throughout the show, Taylor also is interesting because he treats correct like a son and definitely does care about him to an extent, but it's also shown that he finds very annoying and at times is willing to let Kirk risk his life even possibly die just to please him and that I find a detriment to Taylor's character and a little concerning, we see this best when he hires Kirk to be a skydiver Lorelai tells him not to do it because it's dangerous because she cares about him and she doesn't want him to get hurt or die, but Kirk does it anyway to please Taylor and almost dies, so that is definitely another very concerning issue and it's a little ambiguous as to both whether or not Kirk has a disability and whether or not how much Taylor truly cares about him, although it is definitely very clear that other people of stars Hollow do care about him and it would also make sense in regards to him having a disability when it comes to his relationship with Lulu as well why she is so sweet with him and so patient and understanding, she doesn't care that he has a disability she loves him for who he is because she knows how hard-working and how intelligent he is, plus she's just a sweet person who works with kids so she understands that more child like mindset that Kirk has because of some stunted growth and development, it also explains why he wanted to be in the play with the kids and while he doesn't always act like a big kid, we do get that impression throughout the show.

I'm not opposed to the theory that Kirk may have a disability; the cause of his behavior could be multifactorial. I also have to acknowledge the fact that when I make these videos, I introduce theories and interpretations that the show didn't think about or intend. I think that the writers wanted Kirk to just be the funny quirky guy who would add spice to a scene and didn't think about how his behavior would be interpreted by the audience. For a show like Gilmore Girls, I don't think the writers wanted to address very serious topics. If it was made today, I think a character like Kirk would be given a diagnosis or a backstory. So I am definitely not disagreeing with you; I think he does show signs of someone who has a brain that operates differently. Sidenote: I checked out your channel and you have a great on-camera presence. It makes me want to try doing an on-camera video.

@@PensiveWhiskers Thank you I am trying to educate on disability and spread awareness well also showing that disabled or not we're all the same well still highlighting our struggles. I'm also looking to do a podcast, but I'm having trouble finding copyright free music. Also in regards to Kirk I know it was just sort of the bad of the joke and you can interpret it anyway you want to, thank you for agreeing with me though. My point was just that yes sadly shows from around this time from the nineties to mid 2000s unfortunately it was a very common occurrence to make fun of LGBT people as well as make fun of disabled people in shows rather than having it be serious it was always ambiguous and something to not really highlight or draw attention to unless it was part of a joke, despite this I still like Kirk as a character under the foundation of him being disabled as I think it adds more to his character and flashes him out more, despite some of the floors with his character because of how sporadic he was, due to him not being taken too seriously, when you put all the facts together I think it is pretty clear he does have some sort of stunted development issues probably from birth, that don't affect who he is as a person nor do they affect his intelligence, that's another thing to love about Kirk. When it comes to his relationships with people like Lorelai or Luke they're very understanding of him and I think that this is due to him being disabled, along with his relationship with Lulu who is very understanding and compassionate because she works with children and she knows how to treat him, not to mention the fact that she's just a very kind and understanding person. Taylor on the other hand the things that he will get to do for him I am slightly concerned about to be honest when it comes to his character. My point is a lot of the time around this era of television things like this we weren't taken seriously and you're right that if it was made today he probably would've been fully diagnosed with a actual disability, they did have a chance to fix this during the revival, but chose not to same with Michelle they do mention or somewhat acknowledge that he is gay in the revival, but I feel like it wasn't truly on display and there were a lot of mistakes in my opinion with the revival including some jokes and Rory's character in particular that didn't quite make sense. I know it has to do with the fact that the original creator left during season seven and has never seen that season so was trying to revert things back to when she was in charge of the show which did create some hindrance around it because of the way things were back then in terms of comedy etc where there are things that aren't quite as acceptable to say nowadays like the fat jokes or LGBT jokes or things to do with disability which sadly the revival still includes, despite this I do agree with what you said and I just found it all in all a little disappointing thathe wasn't quite as well flashed out as he could've been given that he has the heart and soul of stars hollow at least in my opinion.

The Pinky and the Brain reference really isn't too much of a stretch. In comedy in general, for years there's always a funny, eccentric person and a "straight man" or foil to contrast each other. The contrast highlights each other and almost shows their extreme nature and how silly both roles can be. It also kind of shows how opposites can be friends and work together despite their differences, but it can also be a struggle. So technically, Pinky and the Brain and Kirk and Luke are basically comedy formulas that have worked forever. I also enjoy Kirk. I too can see how some may think he's too childish and could see him as "annoying", but I personally don't see anything wrong with staying playful for most of your life, even well into old age. I think the people who get the most frustrated with "childish adults" are parents that are frustrated with being parents to their own children and have to be the adult, when they sort of resent the fact that they can't really have fun anymore because they feel they have to look and be responsible. Just a theory I overheard a psychologist saying that makes some sense to me anyway. Great video! Really fun, as I don't see enough Kirk analysis out there. 👍🫶

That is true; the straight man and the funny man is a tried-and-true formula. They are kind of opposites of each other on this show. I like your theory on why some people don't like Kirk's childish nature, it is kind of the same reason that Luke is annoyed with Kirk; Luke takes care of others so he is more annoyed by Kirk. Thank you for watching!

@emilysragz 4 ай бұрын
@PensiveWhiskers yes, Luke is a pretty responsible adult, I mean, he helps others and has his own cafe that he mostly runs himself, so, just like Lorelei, he's very independent by nature. He kind of becomes a little too uptight though because of this and when he parent's Jess or finds out he's a real parent at first his softer side sort of goes out the window and he becomes more anxious with his parenting style. Lorelei is more playful and laid back even though she's independent her responsible nature is strictly reserved for doing things like focusing on career stuff, but even then, she doesn't seem to take life as seriously. But Kirk is probably in his 30s and doesn't seem to hold a job for very long, nor does he appear to want kids or anything like that long-term, so I can see how that can frustrate people like Luke. I'm like a big kid myself, so I get Kirk, but I can still see why that may not jive with other personality types. Thank you for creating these videos with such respectful kindness and curiosity to the characters and the show's production. It's a great show to watch and analyze! Also, thank you for your equally kind and respectful response to my comment. I appreciate your videos! 💗
