The information given was good, however the analogies presented made it more confusing instead of clearer. Carry down is not like a snow plow. It's oil picked up in the front of the lane and redeposited in the dry when the ball rolls over it. Eventually they got to that point of mentioning it but it was lost in the rest. I only picked it up because I was specifically looking for that point. Would have missed it if I didn't already know it. Clearer communication would be better.

For a bowler looking to practice and learn how to read oil patterns/transition better do you have any suggestions on where/how to bowl on different "fresh" oil patterns other then "open bowl" which the lanes are already beat up and there is a ton of oil carry down from plastic balls? -thanks!

So what is your advise on wiping off the ball after every shot? Should I or not?
@NationalBowlingAcademy
@NationalBowlingAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the question. We recommend wiping the ball off after every shot. The less oil on the ball the more opportunity it has to perform at it’s best. After you are finished with bowling, use a ball cleaner and a towel to get rid of the oil on your ball. Letting the ball sit in your bag with the oil on it will absorb into the balls surface requiring resurfacing from the pro shop much sooner than if you had just cleaned it after bowling. A good rule of thumb is every 60 games or six months head to your pro shop to get your ball resurfaced for maximum performance. Thanks for watching!

Video is what I've assumed for awhile now. While everyone whines about carry down, I look at my ball after each shot covered in rings of oil and ask "what carry down?"
@alexmerel9924
@alexmerel9924 7 жыл бұрын
TraumaER there are different types of carry down.regular carry down and flair.both can happen but flair carry down is at a much smaller and less wet pace.go bowl four games on a fresh shot at your home house on the end pairs walk down the cat walk when you are done and tell me what you see.best wishes

I bowl with a plastic ball. can I hook with this ball? I have a 3 hole ball but i use all 3 but i tuck the pinky which oddly makes my game better. I don't slide I roll the ball., What is finger tip inserts ?
@scottkiener9108
@scottkiener9108 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, first off plastic balls are not meant to hook and will not hook much at all. Second finger tip inserts are rubber grips that go in your 2 finger holes and they allow you to hook the ball better.

So, if there is no carrydown, what are all those shiny lines, (hundreds of them), that go from the end of the pattern, all the way to the pins?
@jaden577
@jaden577 6 жыл бұрын
Jim Valentine most likely from people that don’t wipe their ball off using a towel. Their ball gets so soaked with oil that it probably deposits it on it’s way down rather than absorbs it XD depending on the pattern and style of course

It's carry down. Carry down still happens on house lanes that may have been oiled early in the day and were played on by kids using house balls or if league bowlers you are with, are using urethane balls. If the lanes were oiled for league and the bowlers are using solid or reactive hybrid balls, the oil will be picked up on the balls and there will minimal carry down.

So if my bowling ball is losing energy , do I want to switch so something that picks up sooner ?
@NationalBowlingAcademy
@NationalBowlingAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, If your bowling ball is losing energy and not hooking in the back of the lane you want to get a ball that keeps energy (or skids) longer. Changing to a ball that picks up sooner will cause a straighter overall motion (especially on the back part of the lane). The comment from Coach Lou about an aggressive surface or aggressive ball is referring to the fact that the bowling ball surfaces today are abrasive and remove the oil from the lane more than ever. Moving to a part of the lane with more oil, changing balls (to something that skids more through the front of the lane), changing hand positions or adjusting speeds can all be adjustments for lanes that are hooking a lot. Thanks for continuing with the Bowling Academy. Stephen Padilla

Or, if the lane is oily - not a lot of hook, slow your ball speed down. If the lanes are dry - too much hook, pick up your ball speed or run your hand up the back of the ball, not on the side. It is trial and error. Practice and see what matches your style.
@jaden577
@jaden577 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Austin just to add on to what you said, if they are physically incapable of picking up their speed or slowing it down consistently and without disrupting their style, then they could also move their feet up or back on the approach. Scoot back if it’s hooking not enough and scoot up if it’s hooking too much.

I will disagree with most replies on this. If your balls losing energy it's not going to carry through the pins and starts to deflect. They are correct that moving into more oil will correct the problem or balling down. But amount of hook is irrelevant. While crankers do impress the young ladies, watching the what the ball is doing in the mid lanes, at the backend, and most importantly through the pins! is paramount. Where did your ball leave the pin deck? Was it between the 8 and the 9 pin? Or was it solid 9 or even between the 9 and 10? In both USBC and Kegel studies, entry angle, though between 4-6 degrees is preferred, does not statistically guarantee strikes. You can crank that ball in at 6 degrees all night but if the ball deflects your going to see corner leaves period. The other more difficult thing you can do is increase your rev rate and change ball speed by adjusting your release and ball height. get the ball more off of your ring and middle fingers by pulling your pinky in tight and extending your index out on the ball. As well you can raise your ball higher in your stance to increase speed and lower hook or the reverse depending on where the ball is hitting.

Are the lane oil companies watching this?They say there products don't carrydown as much?This has been a problem for 40yrs.

Wrong. The balls used years ago were not the same. Modern solids and reactive hybrids along with oiling boards quite differently today has changed the game. You can now miss by quite a few boards and still carry. Leading to higher scores which equals happier kids, which equals smiles on lane operators faces because they can stay in business. Twenty years ago you would not see the walls covered with 300 banners. I've seen seven years olds with perfect games. Forty years ago they were using rubber balls still and had rev rates under 200!

When the oil get weaker should I changed to a ball that hooks less
@NationalBowlingAcademy
@NationalBowlingAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, When the oil pattern breaks down or “transitions” it’s common to change balls to one that hooks less in the front part of the lane and more in the back part of the lane. A common adjustment would be to move the feet, eyes, or both to see if the lane pattern allows you to get to the pocket with the same ball reaction first then perhaps change balls. Thanks for continuing with the Bowling Academy.

move outside with a lateral move maintaining same launch angle or move inside increasing your launch angle to find oil in the front and keep your same break point. all depends on the lanes, your style and equipment. move might be different on different days...

if you lose oil at front..it does carry down..if it simply got lost on front ball would hook early and go high,not hook one time and skid the next..you are getting carry down and can not trust reactive ball.

Urethane wounded bowling and resin killed it. Who the hell wants to lug around 6-8 balls to bowl in a C handicap league. I'd love to see leagues where there is a ban on everything but rubber and plastic balls. I guess I better start working on that time travel machine.
