Today I go over some Glide Technique Positions to improve my own understanding of the throw, and hopefully show you guys some new thoughts. I need to implement a more liner finish with more connection to the implement in both events so by reinforcing some glide positions I hope to improve my Spin. One day at a time!

Your presentation was concise and to the point. The fact that you are exercising proper biomechanics in action and not scratching with every put speaks volumes from an educational perspective. Well done!

Thank you for this great video. I'm 56 and just started throwing about 6 months ago but I've watched hundreds of KZfaq videos on how to throw and I got more helpful tips from this one for my basic glide than I've gotten from all the others. Very helpful!!

Good Lord, this is about the fourth "Life of JY" video I've come across today and each one gets even better than the very excellent first video I saw. I am so glad to have run across this series as they answer my questions about training, shotput and discus that most other videos don't answer. Thanks.

I'm a HS throwing coach and I'm kind of a cripple so I tend to lean on videos to show examples to the athletes. This is by far the best one I have come across and it is now mandatory viewing. Thank you!

A terrific and timely video. Yesterday, i became so frustrated in my glide technique. Listening to your explanations helped me to realize a couple of great points: Need to wrap my arm to keep my body facing backwards; I don't need to get low like Storl (especially since I'm twice his age). Thanks so much for the video. I'm psyched to get back to the circle and glide.

This is brilliant. I saw it when it was new and liked it, but a couple years later I can appreciate it even more.

Thank you; my rotational has been very inconsistent this entire season, hit under 40 feet and haven’t been close since, I’ve been landing wide exactly as you showed, seeing this video made me see that it should feel a lot closer to being wrapped in disc then what I was

Love your work JY, these are awesome, I'm a discus thrower who always sucked at shot but I think it is helpful to learn how to attain a great power position and dominate the delivery so I'm practicing my stand shot and glides and this has helped so much!!

Ive always thought of the spin and the glide the same throw but with a different first step. But for heavier people the spin allows them to take a faster first step than they would be able to with a glide which requires more speed.

Hey, your videos are great! They really helped me better understand the different shot put techniques and the physics behind them. I put together a video on the Cartwheeling Shotput Technique which was banned and would love to hear your input. Il pin your comment if you want to leave any addition insight on the pros or cons of the technical aspects as I’m a long jumper so I’m sure there is way more you can add to it!

When the ball leaves crouser's hand the reversal of the feet immediately reminded me of Timmerman. Another throw that I saw a similar reversal was Mac Wilkins' 232' WR throw in the discus it looks like he finishes the throw sort of like a glider.

Btw. There were people long before Parry O'Brien who put using almost the same technique, see the video on youtube "1936, Shot Putt, Men, Olympic Games, 1936" for a video where at ca. 1:11 you can see a Swede called Berg throw using his back to the throwing direction and similar style to modern gliders, just a hint of the old technique (slightly open body position) remaining, O'Brien may not have known about them, but he was like Baryshnikov in that neither were the first, just those who got known for introducing new techniques. With rotational shot, people were doing experiments definitely before 1961, as an athletics book from ca. 1961 that I read mentions it, and Rolf Oesterreich (GDR, who achieved a WR but was not ratified because the officials in the GDR didn't want him to have this for reasons of not being politically checked/aligned with the regime) on his website says people were doing it in the 1940s. He mentions there: F. Tootell, O. Chandler, B. Ward, J. McGrath (from USA), J. Malek (Czech republic) und V. Alexejew (USSR),

I would like that you make an analysis on Randy’s technique. The reasons and positions that made him broke the world record. So I can apply them with the glide concept as Crouser did.

JY can you explain why Timmerman never seems to have his right foot underneath him during his glide? He has always seemed out of position to me. Please explain?

Actually in both techniques the progression of the ball is linear. That is why is hard to learn the shotgun spin and discus spin at the same time. But naturally the glide does this better than the spin (although spin generates more power) until Crouser changed this.

The only problem I have with this "wrapped mentality" is that it teaches rotational throwers to pull their left arm across their body and this isn't helpful for their throw. When this happens, they don't fully rotate out of the back and end up too far in the circle, and as well as this they end up opening up before their left foot hits anyway(this is shown when you slow down film). In my honest opinion, the better way to teach this is to teach throwers to "hold" their upper body facing the back of the circle for a short moment as the left foot comes off the ground so that the lower body gets ahead and thus wraps up the body like mentioned in the video

Jordan Yates yeah I’m trying to explain feelings. It has nothing to do with the off arm just the thought of catching it back and a good demo of how Ryan and David do it with a wrap I was told to keep my upper body back like that and it never made sense because I never experienced the feeling of catching the ball back even further.
@LifeofJY
@LifeofJY 5 жыл бұрын
Jordan Yates but also Ryan learned with that wrapped mentality and now he applies that to his throw and is the best in the world.
