In this video I show you an idea I had not that long ago about how to use parallel resistors to calibrate bad analog sticks for an absolute perfect stick. The best part is that this can be calibrated well into the future so if your stick starts drifting next year you can recalibrate it with a very simple turn of a potentiometer.
Email me at Solder_King@outlook.com for controller repair and mod services.

@@Solder_king All you can change is the range of resistance of the pots. So either you made it higher or lower, or you are tying different pins together. So what did you actually change? Because my experience suggests that at least on the genuine xbox controllers I've tested this method doesn't work.

The problem with this mod is that you will be reducing the resistance of the original potentiometers. This can cause the analog sticks to have reduced motion (Maximizing too early) or low sensitivity (Never reaching its maximum like you found here 17:06). A way around it would be to replace the original potentiometers with a higher resistance ones so not only you would be able to calibrate drift but also the range of motion/sensitivity.

Hey buddy, firstly I'd like to thank you for your straight to the point clear and concise info on all the intricates of these dodgy controls that we pay good money for. Me more than most I guess because I cannot see anyone on the net or KZfaq having fixed or attempted to fix an elite 2 control, of which I am on my second. It only took one drop on carpet to create permanent stick drift on the left analog. I had a few solutions so I thought, i had purchased two different analog sticks for the control to replace completely, first one ended up being a cheap ripoff even when I paid more money for than the second one which turned out to be as close to genuine that I have found on the internet. My soldering skills are a bit out if whack as I have not touched one for maybe 15 years as well as not having all the good stuff to make the job easier. In saying this cutting a long story short, i seem to be having the same problem no matter which analog I replaced, and because I had given up on it after months I then attempted an elite 1 controller, coincidentally with the same issues, of course, yet I keep getting the same result. And that is the analog thrown off completely out of the deadzone diagonally basically, and not responding to any movement. With both controls, elite 1 and 2. I'm almost certain that all these analogs cannot be bad, especially when I even had perfect analogs I've taken out if good working controls to replace in the elite 1, as of tonight I'm at my wits end now haha. I would love to be able to get any info or help from you, maybe even send my board if you are able to help with my elite 2 control, very similar to what you've done with all your other controls, I'm sure you'd have it fixed in 5 minutes. Thanks in advance with any info or help you could give me, I could send pics or videos if that would make it easier for you to understand. 😊

Hi! Enjoyed your tutorial on stick drift. I am wanting to substitute a different 10K pot onto my XBOX 1 controller so that I can use a turning disc under my bike's front tire to input steering in XBOX racing games. The bike is on a rear wheel stand, I use a standard speedometer on the rear wheel to sense speed. I removed the pot from my controller and used a multi-meter to try to measure resistance across the pot, but couldn't get the resistance to vary when I turned the pot with a small flat head screw driver. I also couldn't get any reading at all when I put the multimeter probes onto the solder spots on the board where the pot leads for the other joy stick (that I haven't removed from the board) are. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Ted

Hey bud, thanks for the informative video. I had a quick question.. If I wanted to completely remove the pots from the controller, couldn't I just solder a 10k resistor on pins 1 and 3 so the controller thinks the pot is connected and the stick is centered? Or how would I accomplish this? With what I'm using it for I don't need thumb sticks on my 2nd controller at all. I tried taking the little module / pots off the controller but it registers stick input towards one direction.. Not sure why when nothing is connected to the pcb where the pots were. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there! Very interesting mod idea! The 10k across 1 and 3 might work but I'm pretty sure there will be issues if the wiper pin doesn't see anything. I would use two 5k resistors and they could be hooked up with one 5k resistor going from pin 1 to 2 and the other going from 3 to 2. That way you have 10k across with 5k in the middle.

Why can’t you add the ps3 Hall effect thumbsticks into a PS4 one. They both use a 3.2v design so you can rework the circuit with op amps to make the PS4 controller recognize the input from current to voltage. but they are not any kind of a drop in replacement for a POT style stick. None of those 4 connections, save for Ground, will go directly to the controller. The VCC for those things, IIRC, is 3.2v, and that is what the PS3 controllers were setup to use for their AN+ voltage. You could probably get away with installing them in a DS4, along with the Op-Amps for them, since they also run a 3.2v AN+ setup, but the DS5 there's going to need to be a bit more work done in there as they have a 1.8v AN+ setup. The best option would be to use the Op-Amp circuits from the controller that you get the sticks from. On the latter version controllers they crammed all of that mess, as well as some other stuff, into one single chip. That kind of controller you don't want for parts, so the MSU_VX3, MSU_VX4 and MSU_VX5, rule all of those out. You want the older style, MSU_V2, MSU_V3.5 or MSU_VX versions, as they all still have the Op-Amp setups. The Op-Amps each have a handful of support circuitry as well, Resistor and Caps, that also will need to be installed. Best thing to do there would be to get an older style DS3, tear it down and reverse that section of the thing, then make up your ow boards for the components. It's not going to be a nice quick and easy thing to do, but it's doable.

I don't get why you need two adjustment pots per axis. Seems like one between the wiper and the leg that's it's "too far" from would do. Can you explain?
@Solder_king
@Solder_king 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I didn't cover it in my video because I actually did try to calibrate using one pot but it messed up the entire stick by just adding one. Not really sure why but my guess would be that the controller doesn't like having only one side changed in reference to the other.
@xeostube

@@Solder_king that's definitely a puzzle. When you say the entire stick you mean one pot messed up two axes? Or?
@Solder_king
@Solder_king 3 жыл бұрын
@@xeostube it messed up the axis it was on. You think it should work by just trying to bring one sides resistance as close to equal as the other but for some reason the controller didn't like it.
@xeostube
@xeostube 3 жыл бұрын
@@Solder_king in the video it's not clear what you are doing for each axis, but it sounds like you do adjust each pair of pots per axis. It would be nice if you could shoot a short follow-up where you demonstrate how changing the trim values into more extreme levels change how the Xbox interprets the joystick position.

Funny, I found this video by planning on doing the same thing but only using the potentiometers temporarily to get the values to solder resistors in place. I have a controller that even after changing the stick 3 times (thinking I did something wrong), all 3 were way out the same. Sony must of calibrated the controller with a not so good pot so now it is stuck that way forever. Thanks for this video, it has confirmed my idea.
@Tailslol
@Tailslol Жыл бұрын
Not bad but I can see big problems here....first. when the pots will continue to degrade over time you'll have to adjust more and more to compensate untill you can't anymore... 2 ND issue is, there is no fix if the resistive path is damaged making the stick sensitivity inconsistent. And your stick will move all over the place... The only fix i see here is hall effects sticks.

Hello, a couple years ago I got into repairing ps4 controllers and I been having problems with the drift I have a little set up and physically know how to replace the analog stick, but what im struggling with is the Potentiometers. I don't know which one to use for like the common ps4 controllers like jdm 010/30/40 basically the controllers with blue joysticks. I bought some Potentiometer with the 10kohm resistance but it didn't work. So the question is how do I know what resistance Potentiometer to use?

To fix range of the stick, can you add a permanent resistor to leg 1 or 3 of the x or y axis analog stick potentiometer (no cutting or Dremel)?
@Solder_king
@Solder_king 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly! That would require some experimentation to be sure. Definitely worth trying though! That would increase the resistance of the pot across the resistor which in my head I can't figure out if it would increase ir decrease the throw. I'll give it a shot tho!

So I've now tried your two pot method on a couple joysticks and I still find that it's got just as much distortion as adding one adjustment pot. That is to say, you can easily fix stick drift, but it distorts the rest of the range badly between the center dead zone and the full travel of the joystick. I'm doing the same thing you are (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrGApqyknJ-RoY0.html) but just with full size pots so that it's easy to see what's going on. In theory your solution should work great, but in practice there's something odd about how the official xbox one controllers read out the joystick pots.

Ok ok so the science behind it is amazing. I literally started soldering 2 days ago. Just To solder in new analog sticks and I did eventually! But they still drift. New sticks still drift! I posted a video about it and guy told me I need to calibrate them. Which then brings me to “ so you need to calibrate the new sticks” or they useless. So I’m guessing I wasted £10 for 2 sticks because idk how to calibrate them. Then this dude building some crazy box thing with a few screws and living in 2040 while me and my soldering skills are in 2013 still. I have a PS4 controller with stick drift and I can’t fix it. I wished in the uk there was some dude who live 2 miles away that could show me how to fix. Or just help. PS4 pads suck ass. Bro what is that thing you got! Potentiometer box thing. That’s everybody’s dream. I have a guy with 3 dead controllers due to stick drift, How the heck man. Great video.
