Is Seroquel Good for Long-Term Use?
While we do not yet know the full extent of Seroquel’s long-term effects, some of the research so far has been concerning to psychiatrists and health advocates. While the initial trials that were used to approve Seroquel for the treatment of schizophrenia demonstrated fairly consistent tolerance and efficacy, the studies into long-term use so far have had more mixed to disastrous results.
Some of the most common side effects emerging among long-term quetiapine patients include muscle issues. The side effects reported range from simple annoyances like stiff muscles to debilitating conditions like constant involuntary movement in the mouth.
Some of the most common side effects emerging among long-term quetiapine patients include muscle issues. The side effects reported range from simple annoyances like stiff muscles to debilitating conditions like constant involuntary movement in the mouth.
The muscle problems related to long-term Seroquel treatment can be divided into two categories, the first being extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) and the other being tardive dyskinesia (TD). EPS manifests as muscles that are restless, prone to involuntary trembling, and frequently feel stiff. TD results in slow muscle response and awkward, difficult-to-control movements. The first symptoms of TD often manifest in small, involuntary movements in the muscles in the mouth, jaw, and tongue.
What Does Quetiapine Do to the Brain?
In short, we don’t know exactly how Seroquel works on the brain. We know that using Seroquel produces a sedative effect that can help resolve serious schizophrenic episodes where someone is at risk of harming themselves and others, but we don’t know if relying too heavily on Seroquel over time might be doing more harm than good to the patient’s brain and body.

That's great. It seems that some ppl do get benefit from these drugs, at least for awhile. That is good you are on a lower dose - seems to be best to take as low of a dose as possible. Unfortunately, it seems like most prescribing don't do that - they start at a really high dose and never decrease. More drug = more side effects, so if a person could get away with as little as possible or when they get better, taper off. Unfortunately, with time, side effects may start to appear as your brain chemistry has been changed. Might want to think about decreasing if you get stable for awhile. I think behaviors can also be learned/changed, maybe the drug helps you to be at a place to do that. If symptoms return, you can always increase again. Not medical advice, obviously; just thinking out loud. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out.

Hi I’m Denisse Rivera At age 23 I went thru a hard brake up which led to hardcore drug use and risky behaviors. My mom took me for help at a mental health clinic where they prescribed me lithium carbonate and Seroquel amongst others that the doctors discontinued. (Latuda, Depakote, and gabapentin). Now days I am sober and have a sober partner, I also am in college( transferring in 2024) I go to mental health groups and I have stopped on my own, that medicine Seroquel. I was on 200mg then moved to 150mg I got rid of it I hated the effects it gave me so I’ve stopped taking it for over 40 days. I feel fine

I was put on seroquel about 3 years ago for bipolar type 2 and by a regular MD…not a mental illness specialist. On came the weight then I fell violently ill with severe stomach issues followed by joint and bone pain, inflammation, neuropathy in hands and feet, leucocytosis, memory loss, constant sinus problems, uncontrollable trembling of my knees…and weight fluctuations. My dr just kept adding meds and now I’m on 21 different medications for chronic disease! I started researching the medications I’m on and realized Seroquel could be the culprit for all of it! Have an appointment with a specialist to hopefully properly get a diagnosis or rule out bipolar type 2 and get me off of it. My anxiety/ptsd has came back with a vengeance also. I need to get off the majority of meds I’ve been put on in the past year in a half. Also have a rheumatology appointment to check for autoimmune disorders. It takes months to get into each specialist and my quality of life is horrible.

Can you address rare side effects? My daughter was on "low-dose" seroquel (50-75mg) for over five years. She believed she was misdiagnosed and not treated appropriately. She tried tapering several times and suffered insomnia that led to catatonia-like symptoms. Her psychiatrist concluded it was a relapse of her underlying psychotic condition. Eventually we went to a different psychiatrist who agreed with my daughter that she did not have a psychotic condition. They speculate that her catatonia symptoms were possibly caused by Seroquel. Anyway, she's off and doing well. But we wonder why this happened. Apparently it is extremely rare. Thank you for all that you do to help people have better lives.

Honestly, I don't think it's rare to develop catatonia. I've read about it several times. Side effects and withdrawal problems go underreported, because they are assigned to mental illnesses, that's why it seems to be a rare effect.
@Vitobandito434
@Vitobandito434 11 ай бұрын
@@kareendeveraux1847 Thanks. I don't either. Actually, at this point, I don't think it was a withdrawal symptom. I think the catatonia was caused by suddenly increasing her dosage of seroquel. Every time she reduced her meds, she experienced insomnia for several days. Each time, her doctor would then instruct her to rapidly increase her dosage. That's when she would have catatonia and other symptoms. I now believe she was experiencing neuroleptic malignant syndrome. This happened six times. It's shocking to me that her doctors never recognized that insomnia is a normal withdrawal symptom. They never recognized that rapidly increasing dosage could be the cause of catatonia. I'm just relieved she's off the medication and has had no symptoms in almost a year.

I've been on Seroquel for a long time perhaps 15-20 years. I've had to titrate up more and more. It's interesting because it is a dopamine inhibitor but I'm also on Adderall XR so while the Seroquel is inhibiting the dopamine, the adderall shoots into my brain makes me feel like getting out of bed. Lately I've not felt like myself at all very tough to communicate. I have Seroquel both to be thankful for as a younger person but now at 42 my brain feels scattered I'm going bankrupt and the court system frowns upon psychiatric disability so I"m fucked. Back to moving in with my parents knowing I'm going to die early is actually a relief.

Yeah, one drug to counter another - you know you are in trouble! You can taper off .. it will take you long time to do it probably. (or not) but you do not have to stay where you are. As someone said - neuroplasticity is real. There are a lot of tapering communities now! You won't get help from a mainstream doc, you will probably have to do it yourself - but you can get help. It's easy to find nowadays, just start looking on social media. This guy sounds like he runs a pricey clinic - and you won't be able to afford that. There are even FB groups for tapering (although I don't like FB, and would worry about the tracking - heck, same thing here, lol). Stay strong.

I was on various medications that continued to fail in keeping me sane enough to function. I have been on seroquel for almost two years. Closer to a year and a half but slightly over. I have been medication compliant for four years which is a huge milestone for a bipolar diagnosed person. Taking medications are very easy to fall out of habit because you feel the medication is working and you think no longer need it. For me bipolar is diabetes and seroquel is my insulin. Don’t like that analogy? Seroquel is practically my CBD and bipolar is my cancer that I refuse to take radiation for which in this case would be Zyprexia Geodone Lithium especially or worse nothing at all. Seroquel is my life saving medication so this sucks… all these long term effects I literally have no other choice

A low dose benzo would be my best guess. Try not to go higher. I wish I had had this option but they gave me 6 1mg Xanax with my seroquel so I do not have that choice any longer. Benzos are better than most psych drugs however they are addicting. I hope you get off this crap. Most often Drs will keep on you to try different psych meds that only continue to harm. I only wish I could take a pill to ease my symptoms but it's one of the most difficult things I've ever done getting off of this. If you get off try to help other people. So many think these drugs are okay for off label use. I don't believe they're good even for people with schizophrenia. These drugs cause what they say they treat. It's madness.

There are people that are either afraid or nervous to have these discussions with their own psychiatrist or medication management team and we have content such as this. Misinformation/ biased information spread to nervous and possibly desperate people in need of some type of support either for them, or a family member. They put me on 300mg instant 4 x a day and that was just one of like 5 meds at some shitty abusive kids hospital in ossining new york, haldol 5mg 3 times a day was paired with it by the maniacal head doctor . I got my jaw broken there for now reason and they locked me in the equivalent of a segregation cell with a mat on the floor feeding g me Fritos with a broken jaw. There was also one other atypical antipsychotic they had me on with those as well....I was 15 horrified in that "hospital" the staff was insanely abusive and there had been lawsuits and abuse claims for decades prior. Sucks having abusive familg that do this to you and the doctors and the nurses and staff and everyone. To the head male staff member who pulled out my boxers and examined my privates front to back, you know who you are I pray to god you've changed and find can Jesus Christ. I find out years later a well known NY rapper made a song about this place years before I was there Shout out to Cage "In Stony Lodge"

I was put in for sleep! I just have depression and anxiety and OCD. So I fear that it could actually cause more mental health problems. When I hear it blocks dopamine it seems it could cause worse depression. I don’t want that. It’s was put in low dose of Pristiq. I was lowered off all others for a few years and when I got down to only taking 75 mg Wellbutrin I really started feeling signs of depression come back so we upped it back to 100 then 150 again but still didn’t help. I finally was so tired 🥱 f crying all the time that I let it be raised to 300 a day. Still cry alit so we added Pristiq. That is when my sleep problems began. Nothing worked for sleep. I have opposite symptoms that they wake me. I don’t feel anything from histamine meds and trazadone works well but cause severe migraines. So we tried the seraquel. I’m afraid to continue but i afraid to stop. I can’t sleep. This seraquil is only helping sleep just a little bit.so I feel it m at a loss.

Get off of it. Use melatonine instead. Don’t go benzo! They’re all very damaging drugs and should be illegal. I know, because I’ve taken both quetiapine and lorazepam.
