Long-Term Paxil Side Effects
Unfortunately, when the efficacy and risks of drugs are studied, the length of the majority of these studies is only short term. However, many Americans who have been prescribed SSRIs have been taking them for 10 years or more. This is troubling, as there have been some severe risks associated with long term use of antidepressants, such as a 14% increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke. Worse, long-term Paxil use is associated with a 33% increased risk of death.
Serotonin plays vital roles in immune function, digestion, and growth. Continuous disruption of these levels may have wide-ranging negative effects, especially for certain populations. The side effects of Paxil in elderly patients can include negative effects on cognitive function, as there is strong evidence that the long-term usage of Paxil may lead to an increased risk of dementia. Also, between 1-8% of patients taking Paxil in various clinical trials developed hypomania and mania symptoms. Paxil has been used to treat hot flashes associated with menopause.
While Paxil may decrease incidents of hot flashes, the side effects of Paxil for hot flashes are most commonly fatigue and dizziness. Few studies have been carried out on use of SSRIs during pregnancy, but the ones that are published show increased risk to the infant including premature term, smaller head growth, and the potential for numerous other birth defects, for which the drug maker has been fined over $1 billion in damages to 800 cases reported up to 2010. No data for later lawsuits concerning birth defects has been published on extensive search.
Serious side effects of long-term Paxil use include:
Tremors
Loss of coordination
Restlessness
Muscle weakness
Tingling
Numbness
Black stool
Hallucinations
Eye pain, redness or swelling
While most SSRIs aren’t a primary concern for recreational use, dependency is a possibility with any drug. According to the FDA, Paxil withdrawal symptoms can be severe and “treatable only by restarting the drug.” Withdrawal symptoms occur when the drug is stopped after drug dependency has developed.
Symptoms of Paxil withdrawal include:
Agitation
Aggression
Diarrhea
Forgetfulness
Headaches
High blood pressure
Insomnia
Sexual dysfunction
Sweating
Weight gain

I was put on Paxil in 1998 when I was 10 years old. I then continued to take it for 20 years due to the fact that I believed I simply had a "chemical imbalance" and that the paxil was "correcting" this for me. At age 30, due to work/life stress, my dose was doubled (from 20mg to 40mg) for the first time in 20 years. What resulted was months of suicidal thoughts and mania. I was out of my mind and participated in some dangerous activities. I didn't care, I was cruel, VERY angry, I was scared, etc. It was a nightmare. When 2020 hit, I knew I needed a new way to cope. I started doing breathing exercises and learned to meditate (cannabis helped). I started doing yoga. After a year of this, I was struck with a very strong message: "It's time to get off the paxil." I was still on my doubled dose (40mg) and started learning everything I could about tapering. I had tried (and failed) to get off paxil at two different times, years earlier. However, collectively, we've learned so much more about how to get off these drugs. Slowly!! I now drop 10% of my dose every 3 weeks. After 20 months of tapering, I'm down to 5mg. I have no plans of stopping. It's been the hardest challenge of my life but I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Getting off of psych drugs is a process of reconnecting with yourself. There's two things one must deal with: the withdrawals as well as the underlying pain/trauma that caused you to reach for the pills in the first place. I no longer identify with being labeled as OCD or anxious. Just human. Love and hope to all. Withdrawal and healing is possible.

30 years myself. Tried getting off numerous times, but medical profession treat as if I’m some kind of a beast. No No No No! I’ve lost years and years of real living life-to numerous to list. I’m tired of being tired of. Tired of other people advising, telling me, urging me, just get to where I don’t wish to say shit about much. Especially the last three years of lockdown. Evil times. Screwed up world. I’m thinking create a paper calendar on my table and taper off my 60mgs by using a nail file. Like you, file small portion away for months until I feel ready to move on to the next reduction. Little by little I could conceivably reach my goal. The other method I discovered, is to seek out a shrink whom can issue a prescription for liquid Paxil packaged in reduced measured portions. I need to get on with it. To my thinking, if I don’t - When? Will I EVER start? 😮

@@garbinator09 I highly recommend liquid paroxetine or you can have a doc write you a prescription for an odd dose (like 50mg) and go to a compound pharmacy. I would also recommend some type of support from family, friends, maybe a peer support group, church, something. It's a hard journey but you can do it. The general advice is to taper off no more than 10% of your current dose every 3-4 weeks. Slow and steady. One day at a time.

@@cowboyjohnsontown - I’ve been out of state with poor internet. Thanks for your reply Cowboy. Life is difficult as is without the drugs professionals insist we take. Longterm use is still not well known.

@@garbinator09 Yes, sadly, us "patients" are the ones discovering how harmful long-term actually is. And processing the anger that comes with this realization is part of withdrawal. It's ok to be angry. But it also seems like most people can either make a full recovery or recover enough to live a much more fulfilled life. I believe these drugs disconnect us from our emotions and our intuition. Withdrawal is a process of reconnecting with ourselves and processing all of those numbed out emotions.

I have been on paroxetine for 34 years! I’m sure what I now suffer from is the actual ssri itself. I don’t know who am after so many years. What once saved me, I believe is now a thorn in my side! Can honestly tick most side effect boxes. Would love to know me without the use of paroxetine. Feel like my life, my authentic self and libido was robbed from me. ✌🏼

I just went cold Turkey off Paxil 20 mg for 20 years. First 2 weeks were awful but I’m now 2 months off and I feel much better. My advice, just go for it and fight your way out. Supplement with fish oils and magnesium. A high quality fish oil will help greatly with brain zaps. Eat well and work out. You’re going to hate it but it’s totally worth it.

Your advice is priceless. My mother had anxiety after her husband was killed in a car accident and she was left with five children. She would run around the block any time of day or night. If it was 2:00 am the cops would stop and ask her who she was and then she would keep running. She was a nurse and somehow got the idea that drugs were not the answer. Point here is she took an active part in her recovery. You gave plenty of good advice in this video on how to do that.

So in this case if in the long term SSRI medications are causing problems and suppose their is a dopamine deficiency, do you think DRI medications should be given and SSRI medications should be tapered and stopped. " Disclaimer" I am not an expert or belong to any medical field. What I have asked is a query or a question out of curiosity . I have not made any statement about treating psychiatric disorders. In case of mental health issues, a qualified medical specialist in the field of mental health issues should be consulted .

Naah! If you can I’d advise rid yourself off this crap. Seek out other avenues to release your stress. Longer you remain on Paxil the worse off you’ll become. Find meaning. Dump the small stuff, let it go. Don’t mean diddly anyway. Self educate. Internet is filled with amazing outstanding positive pathways to lead your life while discovering fulfilling meaning. Big thing is, separating yourself from people whom make you pissed off, put you down, demean you. Use you. I say seek out those who’ve been successful rather you choose small business or working a career. Not just some job. Learn to earn. Earn more by learning and studying more. That Ol’ Army saying from years ago- Be all you can be! No matter what! Stress is! Learn to cope by taking a big-assed hammer and beating the shit out of a steel plate laying on the ground! Kill IT! Or a heavy bag! Grab a baton or fighting club, beat the tar out of it! I put holes in mine! Join a boxing club or any hand to hand combat joint. Learn to deal the hurt by taking the hurt. Confidence. Taking control versus some other twat taking control of you. Compromise. Learn all about this important practice. God’s word is a great place to start. We must learn to balance. Between confident warrior, mixed with being able to rethink (Check Ourselves) by taking a deep breath counting to three telling our mind to settle it down. God’s way of communicating hey dummy! Calm yohself down! Breath. Be ready to apologize. There is so much you can learn versus running away from challenges even opportunities too true enlightenment. It just takes a plan of action to get started. Write it all down. Do Not Be Afraid of Failure! Doing it wrong means you’ll quickly learn to do it just right. Problem solvers are sorely needed in all situations of the workplace. Grandpa’s done now. You go off and grab the world by its tail now and get to it! God we’ll be right there when you need Him.

I am unsure if I will still get a reply to my question since this video is a bit older but if anyone reads this and is familiar with this medicine, maybe you have an answer. I have a friend that has been in a rather short relationship with someone who, we just found out, takes Paxil. He is taking it for Anxiety attacks. Now just a couple days ago everything was fine between them and within 3 days, he got quiet and completely blocked her from contacting him. Now this might not be related at all but I am curious if Paxil can have such a strong affect on someone that it makes you act very out of character quite suddenly. This is not how we got to know him. He was always responsive and such a nice and pleasant person.

Easy. Start taking half a dose for about a week, 2nd week take half a pill every two days and just gradually start skipping more days until you are weaned off. I did it myself with no advice from doctor and had no withdrawal symptoms if you slowly wean off
