The soundtrack of the 2011 Mojang video game Minecraft was composed by German musician Daniel Rosenfeld, better known as C418. The game's soundtrack is instrumental ambient music. It has been praised by critics; in 2011, the video game blog Kotaku chose the soundtrack as one of the best video game soundtracks of that year. Minecraft's soundtrack was released across two soundtrack albums, Minecraft - Volume Alpha (2011), and Minecraft - Volume Beta (2013). Both albums include music featured in the game, as well as other music included in trailers, and instrumentals that were not included in the game's final release. In 2015, Rosenfeld hinted at a potential upcoming third album for Minecraft's soundtrack. In 2017, Rosenfeld confirmed the future release, claiming the album "is still far from done".
In a panel at MineCon in 2012, Rosenfeld stated that he has had a long-term interest in video games, and was involved with several video game communities. He met Markus Persson in an Internet Relay Chat (IRC), and began composing music for Minecraft when the game was in its very early stages as a tech demo. The two shared interest in Aphex Twin, and exchanged each other's projects. Both were impressed by each other's work, and eventually Persson chose to pair Rosenfeld's music with his game.
The soundtrack's minimalistic and melancholic composition has been praised by critics. On the topic of the music's minimalism, Rosenfeld has stated that it was "unavoidable", as "Minecraft has a terrible sound engine". The ambient music style of the soundtrack has been compared to the works of Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Aphex Twin, and Vangelis. In 2018, The Boar described the soundtrack's composition as "nostalgia in its purest form".

My brother and I discovered Minecraft when I was five and he was seven in June of 2009. Ever since then I've been playing the game obsessively, and like many of us, the game became an essential part of our childhoods. Throughout the rest of my early adolescence I continued to play the game, and like most people my age I started focusing on servers and SkyDoesMinecraft's letsplays. Though I continued to play the game, I turned off the music entirely. Minecraft became just another game to me, one that I only played on my phone during long plane rides, or when I got bored in the car when my mom drove me home from school. Consequentially, the game lost meaning to me, I ceased to care about something that was so essential in my development. In July of 2018 I was scrolling through my youtube feed when I found a video called "a Tribute to Minecraft" by a small youtuber called Jschlatt, a youtuber that up until that point I had never heard of but would become alto familiar with as time passed by. I clicked on the video out of curiosity "why is a Minecraft video in my reccomended? I haven't watched a Minecraft video in years" I thought to myself. Little did I know, I was about to watch my favorite video on the internet. Though I was apprehensive about the video at first, but as it continued I began to realize something, the video I was watching was of a man who's experiences with and feelings regarding Minecraft almost perfectly mimicked my own. Finally, as the video ended, as the music faded in, I began to cry. I cried more than I had for things that were far far more important.Like many people who had watched the video, I was crying because Minecraft's music was helping me to feel things I hadn't felt since I was young, since before I was depressed, since before my grades in school mattered more than my well being. Minecraft was something that I could escape to when I felt sad or when my parents fought, something I could play to escape my crippling childhood loneliness. When I watched that video, all of those emotions, the sadness, the joy, the pain, the anger, all of it came back to me. Minecraft didn't die, my innocence did. Even though I was only 14, my childhood had already left me, my fear of high school grades, and having to think about what to major in or what college to go to represented my quickly approaching adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it. Minecraft was changing too. The game is now almost unrecognizable from what it was back in alpha, but its music will always remain the same. The quiet piano melodies of Sweden and Wet hands will always be there even if they add random useless mobs or change what a zombie pigman is. Minecraft will always be a part of me, It will always represent my childhood, and the blissful ignorance of being too young to understand the pain of growing up. Thank you Mojang for making my favorite game, and thank you C418 for playing your piano into my heart.

It's a cool summer night in the early 2010's. You're playing minecraft on your parent's laptop or XBOX 360. Hey Volksgeist, I‘ve been following you for a while now and your videos always amazed me, however none of your previous work has moved me like this one, it really hit close to home. Im 20 now and played a lot of minecraft throughout the last 10 years. This video made me realise how big of an influence this game has had on me, not just as a place to sozialise, but as a whole new world to discover. The music always started at just the right moment, feeling familiar and comforting and letting you rest for a moment to look back on what you‘ve already build. Im currently in my childhood home, because of quarantine, sitting in my bed at 2 am and watching this beautiful video. It actually made me cry and think a lot about childhood and how quickly you become an adult without realising it. Hearing the Minecraft soundtrack helped me to get rid of the anxious felling of having missed something in the last 20 years and made me appreciate the good times i had. I hope i can discover the real world with the same curiosity, that i felt while walking through the blocky worlds of minecraft. Keep up the good work! You really move a lot in people, more than you might think.

I first played minecraft around 2011, from the first moment I played this game, I knew it was different. The music from this game brought back a beauty that I slowly stopped seeing long ago. The world seemed colorless and dull, but this track helped clear the darkness that creeps in so slowly that you do even realize that it is. These tracks will always be one with my childhood. The joy and peace I had as a kid is still in there somewhere deep, even though I thought I had lost them. I forgot how beautiful the world could be.

Hey Volksgeist, minecraft played a huge role in my childhood growing up and I could never wait until I got home to play on my friends minecraft server with him and my other friends. A couple years later, I've moved across an ocean and playing minecraft is one of the few ways that I can still interact them. I'm pretty bad at making friends, and I was super close to all my friends back in my hometown so it's something really important to me. I'm still pretty young (15 rn) but the bit at the end about letting go about childhood hit home with me. These past couple of months I've been thinking more about what college I'm going to, money and what I'll do in life and as much as I hate to see it, I miss the good old days when I would just mess around with my friends and I would only think about the next way to have fun with my buddies. Watching this end of the video made me tear up a bit, love you Volksgeist and your beautiful content

I love how everyone making these Minecraft soundtrack videos (which are all great and different from one another, watch ALL of them) is more or less my age, give or take a year or two. We were all in sixth, seventh, eighth grade when Minecraft peaked in popularity, had nothing to worry about except school and the games we played. We had endless time to spend playing the game that shaped us, made us friends we still have today, that we have neglected for some years now and now start to play again from time to time. It's such a wonderful thing that happened to us, and I'm incredibly thankful I was born in the right year to get to experience this. Had I been born three years earlier or later, my experiences would have been so different. I couldn't relate to these videos so much today, I wouldn't have some of the friends I have today, the memories of times of innocence and happiness that stem from this game. It gave me so much, a place to be, to connect with people, when in real life, I couldn't connect with anyone, because I was too different, too awkward. I'm so thankful I grew up with a game as wonderful as Minecraft, with social media only gradually becoming part of my life as I grew older, having spent most of my childhood playing outside... And not with Fortnite, Snapchat and TikTok at the youngest age. I clicked on this video searching for another great one about the Minecraft soundtrack I watched a few weeks ago, a much more analytical one, to show to my dad. I didn't expect to cry today. But... I did. Your video really hit home with me. Thanks for this piece of art only people around our age can truly appreciate.

Wow. Once again, an amazing video Volksgeist. Especially the way you told that video‘s story. Brilliant. And since I’m of similar age, having bought Minecraft around the same time and having experienced the same things with my friends, I want to say thank you for letting me remember that time in my life I thought I’ve had forgotten already. Thank you

In film there’s an idea that if your film has good audio, it’ll come across well. Even it’s filmed on a phone or a go pro- with good audio that filming technique comes across as a stylistic choice. I think there’s something similar here with Minecraft and it’s music. :)

I think the reason why Minecraft is such a nostalgic game is because of how much the world has changed from when Minecraft was released, and how we all have grown up with it. There will never be another game like Minecraft, the simple sandbox that was able to let kids be, kids.

I love how so many soundtrack review videos have Jschlatt fucking tearing people apart in the intro, he's seems to do a good amount of collabs. Also, this video was really cool in the fact that you included details on the history of C418 as well :)

Videos like these always get me in my feels. The fact that we were making the best memories in our lives without knowing it saddens me that we weren't able to fully cherish those times. Video games really aren't just games, these games make us the people who we are now. The freedom and peacefulness of the past still breaks my heart with my parents not on good terms like they were back then and school not being stressful. Minecraft really is a game that changed me.

I think the best way i can describe the soundtrack is how schlatt puts it in A Tribute To Minecraft, it’s not brilliant music by itself, it doesn’t blow you away the first time you hear it. The reason it’s so beautiful to everyone is simply the memories we have tied to it. A reminder of our childhood. We didn’t know listening to it that later in life, these songs would make us all suddenly feel such a strong emotional reaction, either hearing it for the first time in years or when we’re going through something , for lack of a better word, rough. minecraft’s soundtrack will be a staple of our generation. a soundtrack that single handily raised thousands of kids. and years later, being able to make us feel things and remember things we haven’t been able to in years. personally, listening to the soundtrack reminds me of a time when i was genuinely happy. when i didn’t have any responsibilities, stresses, horrible mental health issues. it reminds me of something i haven’t genuinely felt in years. long lost friends, playing with my cousins for hours on end, being able to handle life, and sometimes, i can transport back to that time when i’m listening to the soundtrack. i can go back to when i was actually happy, and even if it isn’t for long, it’s beautiful.

I've had so much fun listening to the music of Minecraft. I first played it at age 13 in 2011, but starting late 2013 I really got into creative mode and I spent most of my spare time in 2015 and a bit of 16 working on project maps, and not once did I mute the music. It's an incredible soundtrack, I can hardly explain but it's so moving. Sometimes I would just sit in the Nether and listen to the soundtrack there. It's such a good listen and Volume Beta is criminally underrated

Every time I hear the calming tunes of the album I get transported back to staying up late building endlessly with my friends. Friends that I have lost contact with but will always cherish, they are some of the best memories of my life. What I would give to just have one more game with them, and have the childhood freedom that’s long gone now

Man it went from understanding musical composition and reasoning for the creative choices of a sound designer and a videogame creator and progammmer, to hearing about life and happiness and freedom and imagination and being able to do anything, just having the means, and thinking about what those means were, are. Great video. A bit of a segue but that is fine, it all came together nicely.
