Much like the Traction Circle, the 100% Traction Rule describes the finesse between steering and pedals. The racing tip illustrates the relationship between the gas, brake, and the steering wheel on mixed surfaces.

I'm trying to overcome brake acuated differential on my Corolla, lot of tap dancing with the left foot on brake. ECU will cut power if I stay on the brake and gas together too long or too hard. Running about 6 seconds on average behind the AWD turbo guys.

If you go full brake and then add steering, you won't compromise your braking much at all, you will just understeer.

Understeer is compromised steering, that is why it's called under-steer. If you're at full brake pressure and you add steering, the car will not start to accelerate, it just won't react to your steering input. Your braking will likely be just as effective as it was... On a loose surface, it could actually stop quicker with some steering input if the square edge of your front tire provides more resistance than the round tread of the tire. This is why you see so many rally cars entering corners hard on the brake with some angle instead of completely straight on as you would more commonly on tarmac.

Hey guys. Thanks for your concerns. There are many situations where understeer or oversteer is desirable, but the point of this video was to explain a complicated, often over-explained situation. The 100% Traction Rule is a simple explanation to understand how inputs affect traction. More to come!

And what about transfering mass? That can change amout of grip on te axle.

​@@jakeells66 Oh snap! Nate and all the folks over there all do a great job, and the more drivers that go through any rally schools / skid control schools, the better off the world is going to be. It's fun to heckle over the details of this stuff, hopefully that comes across as good-natured as we intend it to.

for that kind of traction, you need VFX and may be a lot of green screens.

No, they don't. They don't have _any_ electronic driving aid since at least 15 years now.

@@zwjna but there's a system that allows the wheel to move a bit. I think it's a differential of some kind. Let's say 10 or 20% of throttle can be delivered to the wheels to keep it from blocking. I thought that the ECU would take care of it but if you say so then it may be just mechanical. It's still a cool system. I think it's even better than ABS but you need to brake with left foot

@@trollmcclure1884 Modern WRC cars lock their wheels pretty easily, and we can hear and see the drivers applying throttle and brake inputs quickly and intermitently to avoid lockups. I've never heard of such system you talk about; maybe you refer to the anti lag system, which keeps the throttle slightly open when they lift the pedal completely, to avoid turbo lag.

2:05 I don't think it's being simple, at the end of the day the driver has to know & feel the physics and work with it. It's not something anyone can calculate on the fly no matter how smart they think they are. It can help one understand what to expect to feel though.

It is possible to brake a car at high speed by balancing accelerator clutch at the same time, then twisting a steering a bit without touching brake pedal?
