I love how clearly you explain GA, making reports is less overwhelming after watching your videos :) I'm wondering now if there are different kind of metrics for sessions as there are for users

Thank you so much for your videos they are awesome! I’m trying to get returning users data into Klipfolio. I got total users and new users no problem but don’t know why returning users is not a metric for GA4. Have you ever heard of this/ know what I can do? Thank you so much!

Great explanation, but recently we are finding huge numbers of users in the pages and screens section which don't add up to the users which say 183 , but the overall rows are 230 and when we add things up it never relates or adds upto 183 what is shown top of users column and this is causing us trouble .. please let me know .. would be of great help

Thank you so much for your awesome videos. They're always so helpful. Is there a way of defining non-returning users? For us it would be really useful to see users who have registered and then not returned to the website within a certain period. Thanks :)

Hi Benjamin, in that case, the sum of active users and new users is not necessarily equal to total users?

My debug view is empty even though I have added the G4 tag in Tag Manager. The property is collecting data but the debug view doesn't display anything. Any ideas? It would be great to have a video about this Thanks

Try installing the "Google Analytics Debugger" browser extension and make sure it's enabled by clicking its icon. Also make sure to disable any pop-up blockers like "Privacy Badger", "AdBlock", "ublock Origin", and also the "Analytics Opt-out" extension if you're using it.

For the same date range the number of users decreased when checked after 1 month. For example : I checked my user number on 1st of August for the date range from 1st Dec 2018 to 31st July 2022. It was 5009275 in numbers. But, when I checked the data for the same date range after 1 month, the numbers are decreased now. It is 4986267 in numbers. Could anyone help me with this?

Could you tell me how I can put the metrics of new users vs. recurring users in a data studio report with data from analytics ga4?
@LovesData
@LovesData 2 жыл бұрын
After connecting the GA4 data source, you should have 'New Users' available automatically in Google Data Studio. However, 'Returning Users' isn't available as a default metric yet, this is only currently available directly inside GA4. So you could create a calculated field where you subtract 'News Users' from 'Total Users' in the meantime.

I'm trying to accomplish the exact same thing, which is why I am really annoyed at GA4 and its "simplified" connection to GDS. It seems the old UA created a lot of these dimension fields for you outside of GDS (e.g., User Type), which made doing basic user reporting like you want very easy. It guess the future of GA4 and GDS means a lot more manual work of calculated fields and blending data with itself, which I find really cumbersome -- although, very helpful to learn how to do, eventually. @Loves Data I'd love to see an article or two talking about why this has become more challenging; and more importantly, if there is a rationale behind the evolution of dimensions and reports in GA based on a shift in how we should be reporting interactions on our site. For example, is the concept of comparing new vs. return users no longer relevant, and instead, our focus should be on using all the engagement and events dimensions automatically collected?

@@LovesData When I create a new exploration in GA4 with Total Users, New Users and Returning Users metrics, GA4 reports Returning Users as 876, but Total Users minus New Users equals 171, which is the same result I get using that field calculation in Data Studio. Could it be that once a user has an ID, they are not counted again in Total Users because they are the same user, but they are counted as a Returning User each time they return? By the way, thanks Benjamin for the time and effort you put into your videos. You've taught me alot, and for free. Much appreciated!

Can you help me confirm some of the points below are true or false? GA4 - Total users: Total number of unique users who logged an event, which means that when a user visits the website/app there must be at least one event, e.g. page_view or session_start, if for some reason something without any event will not count as one user - New users: the same meaning with GA3 - Active user: Number of distinct users who visited your website or application. An active user is any user who has an engaged session meaning 1 user must focus in the web for >= 10 seconds or have 1 conversion or have > 1 pageview to be considered 1 active user Thanks

Hi Benjamin, I have a query, towards the end of the video you mention that Client ID is used for "New Users" however Google documentation states it is User ID that determines a New User. User ID is only assigned when people are able to login to your site. So the Returning Customers you seen in GA4 are essentially logged in users and the new users are actually everyone else? What's your take on this?
@LovesData
@LovesData 5 ай бұрын
That’s not right. It’s the first_open or first_visit event that results in a new user being reported. This will be automatically triggered for a new client ID.
@csfsozo
@csfsozo 5 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the response. I understand first_open & first_visit being the event trigger for "new users", however these cookies aren't cross device/browser, neither is client ID. So the amount of "new users" by default is inflated by people moving device or browser. I have a ticket open with Google on this who confirmed the above. We noticed our reported new users was wildly inaccurate compared to our CMS data.
@LovesData
@LovesData 5 ай бұрын
That’s how client ID works by default. And you can then implement user ID, but as I said, referring to your comment that “it is User ID that determines a New User” - this isn’t correct.
@csfsozo
@csfsozo 5 ай бұрын
Thanks Benjamin. This has been really helpful. I tried to link the documentation that mentioned User ID being used, but my comment won't post with the link. You can find the article by searching for: Comparing metrics: Google Analytics 4 vs. Universal Analytics - here it states: The "new user" metric is measured by the number of new unique user IDs that logged the first_open or first_visit event."

GA4 does not show returning users, how do I calculate that and show in Data studio?
@digitalnova8287

GA4 does indeed show Returning Users if you create an exploration report and add the Returning Users metric, but Data Studio does not yet have the metric as an option.

I have more conversions than total users how its possible lol (and yeah, my events configuration are ok wtf) hating GA4 atm
@LovesData

My guess is there are lots of events marked as conversions. I’d check that first and turn off any that don’t drive direct benefit to the business or organization.

@@LovesData ty for your attention, but the real problem was the migration configuration. I did what google ask for, but UA uses "Client ID" param, and GA4 uses "User ID" (something like that, dont remember exactly), but anyway... I gotta this tip in your migration video, I created the GA4 tag in tagmanager to registrate views, instead of using the UA tag old one, they dont comunicate properly. Thats it! Again, thank you =D

so according to ga4, i had 40 users yesterday (even though i had more than that active in half an hour) and GAU tells me i had 2,500 users.... This is a joke.

Thank you, that has been most helpful regarding Total and Active Users! However, you state "... you can be confident that your number of returning users is accurate. While the number of new users you see in your report is impacted for the reasons we've already covered." - but I don't believe that the Returning User metric is any more accurate than New Users? Measuring Returning users will have exactly the same problems as New users in that a single User who deletes cookies or uses different devices will not be counted as a Returning User...
@LovesData
@LovesData 2 жыл бұрын
By accurate, what I mean is that you know that the cookie (or identifier) is available for someone included in your returning user count.

Data will never be 100% accurate, so I always aim to focus on what I can do with the data that’s available, even with the limitations.
