I’ve always empathized with Sans a lot. I’ve dealt with depression for years, and I usually wear a grey hoodie and tell riddles and jokes, before I managed to get some help. So when I first saw Sans, I empathized with him. It sucks, but I’m glad I got better. The fact that so many others haven’t... is disheartening.

Sans is nihilistic. A problem I suffer from as well. Nihilism means that you think nothing you do matters. And he always smiles... Because he is a skeleton. Papyrus can stop smiling because he does not exactly play by the rules of physics. Weirdly enough, sans is slightly more realistic.

My theory is: pretty much the same as yours, but I added a very minor detail. When you said that Papyrus and Toriel were the "anchors" that held Sans together, it got me thinking. Why didn't he just literally give up on life when they died? When he lost the two things that made him happy? Here's what I think. When Papyrus and Toriel died, Sans might have been driven to the brink of almost literal insanity, causing him to fight you and want to kill you ASAP. It was out of pure vengeance, not because he wanted to stop you from leaving the Underground(okay, maybe that too but mostly the vengeance thing)

I always feel tired, but I never go to sleep. Because I always feel like i'll miss something. I feel empty sometimes, but I always hide it. When I feel sad, I try to laugh. This really hits home for me. Before I even saw this video, I related with Sans so much. The laziness, the sleep problems, and the seriousness when needed. Then, after I watched this video, I related even more to him. The depression, the fake smiles, and the certain "anchors" I have to keep me grounded. I am not suicidal though, I hate the thought of death, and I hope it stays that way. I have trouble talking about my feelings, which might end up being my downfall. I'm trying to talk more about them, but it's hard because I don't want people to worry about me, I just want them to be happy. Well, and there's the social anxiety, but I try not to worry about that anymore.

Tbh I think the only thing you forgot the mention is Flowey, Flowey says he once had the same power as the player or human frisk, resets If sans can remember resets surely he can remember Floweys resets. As he also states in the genocide run "there's been a anomaly messing with the timelines" The fact I bring this up is because as we all know Flowey is a murderous flower who tries to harm people He also says that sans has caused him his fair share of resets… now sans only attacks you on the genocide run, and since he is a Royal judge he can't just attack Flowey without Flowey committing some murders, there would be no point. Now with that being said,that means that when Flowey once has the power to reset, he must of tried to kill the whole underground several times. Therefore, Sans and Flowey have fought If sans knows Flowey can reset then he'd know he can't beat you on the genocide run because you have the power to just come back, as he has seen the same fate with Flowey before. This relates to sans's hopelessness on the genocide run because he knows he can't beat you, or get rid of you for good. What I'm trying to say is Sans might just be sticking around not doing anything when you murder all his friends, since when he tried to stop Flowey from doing genocide he'd just come back, he knows you have the exact same power as Flowey so he just stands around because he knows he can't beat you and you'd just come back like Flowey. I just wanted to point this out since it could link to sans's hopelessness and why he just stands around during the genocide run.

One sad thing is that when you die, the world will continue like you never really were there. God... I did it again... Sorry people. I tend to come up with a lot of sad logic...

I think the reason why Sans thinks Papyrus is cool may be because Papyrus is filled with Determination to become a Royal Guardman and to enlighten his life more, which makes Sans think that unlike him, Papyrus is very cheerful and optimistic. I didn't like Sans very much because unlike Undyne, Sans doesn't give his all to stop the Genocide player. He is able to see how many times he beat you and stuff like that yet he doesn't change his attack pattern to make the fight harder, which is why he says "I haven't given my all yet" or something like that. Everytime we die in a battle, we reset by going back to our last save point, which is why the attack pattern of every enemy remains the same. But as for Sans, even though he knows you know his attack pattern, he doesn't change it, which makes me think that he is purely lazy to stop Genocide players. But after watching this, I don't really dislike him now. It makes sense that Sans must have a depression that discourages him to give his all. All that time, I thought he always had a lame excuse for his "laziness" but now I think maybe he has a good reason why he doesn't care much about stopping the Genocide player.

...Sans Is the skeleton version of me. I only suffer from mild Depression, but I'm a full time pessimist. I never get sleep at night, but I do in the day I feel like my life is worthless. No one understands me either, I'm deterministic, and if someone messes with my brother... I will want to murder that person. I act like I'm a happy guy, telling bad puns that are only funny because the are so bad. I have had suicidal thoughts before. I give up on anything in a heart beat. Being Autistic even worsens my life... People annoy me everyday for a reaction I cannot stop from happening. The only reason I keep living and trying is because if I can do something for my one singular friend, or my brother, I will do it, while being as determined as possible (no pun intended). I have a theory about why Sans always appears when you're in Snowdin. This applies to the Genocide and Pacifist ending. He follows you because he might be lonely. Sans DOES has friends, but most of them are scattered everywhere. He doesn't really want to go visit the places his friends are at because he's too lazy and tierd for that. He might also follow you to see that you're not killing/harming anyone. He seems the protective one of the group, but doesn't show it because of him being depressed, lazy, and tierd!

seeing all the comments here I realised im not the only one that feels like living is useless, because no matter what we are all going to die, but apparently no one has found a solution to this. the only temporary solution I found is distracting myself from these thoughts but I always find myself sinking in my mind at some point. guess ill never enjoy life anymore
