Today, we finish up our 3-part series on Extreme Frugality. We covered over 40 tips in strategies in the first two videos in the series. (If you've not seen them, there's a link below). In 2010, we were on a quest to save $30,000 in 20 months to pay cash for our new home. What made this unusual was the fact that we were raising four sons on an income of about $40,000 a year. In this video, we give you the low-down on 20 more ways that we saved cash - fast.

I've never had cable or any subscription. When I was unemployed once, in July when days are long, I didn't turn on lights. When it finally got dark at 9:30 I lit a candle in the room I was in and carried it from room to room if I changed rooms. I also waited until late in the afternoon to turn the AC on, but only for a couple of hours. There were ceiling fans which cooled quite well. The electricity bill was $13 that July. I used to travel for work when I did have a job. I thought electricity would go down because I wasn't there using it. It didn't, so I tried unplugging big pull items, like washer and dryer, TV (used for free library movies), microwave, etc. My electric bill went down by 76%. I got all excited and decided to see if I could take it further. I unplugged EVERYTHING: lamps, clocks, VCR, toaster...everything that had a plug, except the refrigerator. I thought I would have liked to unplug the stove, but I wasn't willing to pull it out and push it back every time I used it. Then I realized the fuse box was on the wall beside the stove. I turned it off at the fuse box until I needed it. All that shaved an additional 11% off electric bill. I started collecting the water that would normally go down the drain as shower water warmed up and used it to water veg and flower gardens. I would get in the shower, get wet, turn the water off, wash, turn the water on long enough to rinse and then off again. The water was on less than a minute per shower. My water bill was about $20 a month. I've had to find extreme ways to be frugal, just like you. After I found them, there was never a reason to go back to spending needlessly. I do have a cat now, so no candles. I keep the heat in the winter low--about 64-65. Below that my nose gets cold and I don't like that. I usually turn the heat off at night, unless outside temp is in 20's or below. In the summer, I go as long as absolutely possible before turning on AC, by,as mentioned, using ceiling fans. When I do turn AC on, the temp will be about 76-78. I turn that off at night, too. Each year, I challenge myself to wait longer to start using AC and heat. My goal has always been to wait till Thanksgiving to turn on heat. I've never quite made it, but I can usually get to about Nov 15th. In the spring, my goal is to make it to June 1st without AC. I usually have to turn it on last week of May. Well, I could go on and on...could turn this into a book, but I'll spare you! I just love listening to you So much! Merry Christmas! With love, Jonna

We love how you think! Our goal is always to not turn the heat on until November 1st. We made it this year, but it was pretty mild. One year, we did make it until mid-November. We were newly married and living in a second floor apartment. The heat from the lower unit trickled up into our apartment and kept us nicely warm until the residual heat couldn't overcome the colder outdoor temperatures. 32 years later, we still have November 1st as our goal date for turning on the furnace.

I thought I was doing well with my frugality until I stumble upon this channel. Lots of great tips & I can learn much more. We live in an instant gratification society & it takes discipline to stick to frugal habits & to reach your financial goals. I agree that frugality is not about deprivation. It’s about making choices of what to spend & not to spend your money on.

I am an only child. When my Mom died I had no help with arrangements. I went to the library and told the librarian I needed 2 songs for a funeral at a funeral chapel in a small town. I borrowed 2 CDs one was mom's favorite hymn song by Elvis Presley..the other was Gene Autrey singing a song I had wanted back in 1968 for dad's funeral but I was denied at that time. Mom would have been thrilled. All friends and family and it was packed..the room, the lobby all the way to the double outside exit doors. Said those singers singing those songs were perfect for Mom

I loved the story of how you would talk to your kids when in a store and they said they wanted an item. Thanks for letting me know. Maybe when it's your birthday we can buy this for you. Brilliant! One other comment I would like to make is, if you don't tell your kids they are being deprived/living on the cheap and instead you let them know your choices are actually better for health, the environment, the family, etc, I believe it is better for the child mentally.

I busted out laughing when you said no one else cut your boys hair until they were near leaving high school. I'm not the only one. I bought my first house years after a divorce, fixed it with my second husband, we scrounged supplies and did a lot of work and bartered for stuff we could not do. We sold that house with what we made and bought our retirement home. It was hard work to fix that house. Our date nights often consisted of nights driving to a site that allowed us to grab the cobblestone from a torn down house. That cobblestone became the landscaping in the front and the bedrock for a driveway which we packed in and threw crushed concrete over and packed down with a half ton truck. The original cost of fixing that driveway was 1500.00. Our cost, gas to pick up rocks and two loads of crushed concrete at about 100.00.

Instead of going somewhere else on a day trip, really explore your own town/city. The library, city/town hall, a visitor center...online...all have ideas of free things to see and do, no matter where you live. Look at the architecture, especially older buildings, and see if you can determine the style and materials used in their construction. Visit churches and enjoy the stained glass. Many small towns have museums that are either free or very low cost. Parks may offer places for a picnic or you may come across someone doing a hobby you're unfamiliar with, or playing musical instruments. Look at the plants and, if you like what you see, hunt down the person responsible for their care and ask for seeds or cuttings. Check out books on birds, plants or rocks/minerals in your area and see how many you can identify while exploring. You'll be amazed at what you can find in a six block radius of your home. And, if you live in an area with a university or college, there are always events taking place that are free.

Thank you for being so non-judgmental and so kindly teaching about frugality. I have met so many people that make themselves appear as better people just because they are better at saving. They even prided themselves on not giving gifts to each other, there wasn't much love and fun in their frugality. When you have kids, explain frugality to them and why you do it. They may feel excluded in a group with others when every other kid gets e.g. ice cream, not even big things. It can have an emotional effect. Many people as adults cannot stop spending money on things they felt left deprived of as kids. And I think it's because their parents didn't explain why they always said, "No, we brought our own." I love that you made it a team effort.

@@UndertheMedian Yes, I can see that this really mattered to you, and it made all the difference. ♥️ So many people feel so bad about frugality and transmit that "not enough"-feeling towards their kids, and it backfires when frugality is attached to feeling poor and left out.

What we love most in life are often not things that cost money. It is spending time with friends and family. Meaningful conversations, a day at the beach, playing with the kids or picnic in the sunset will make you connect deeper and make you feel rich. A staycation can be great. I see so many friends missing out of what we have nearby, because they always go abroad. I love both, but with a curious mind you don't have to go far to explore! Have been bingewatching your videos for days now. Love the way you guys are frugal and think twice about spending your money. And giving tips about this! This tip today I didn't understand about the AC pulling up some degrees to keep the house cooler in summer. Is it not more frugal not to use AC (or fans) at all? There are much smarter (and cheeper) ways to keep heat out of your home. Like insulation and keeping doors and windows closed during the day. Use shutters like in the mediteranian countries. Open shutters and windows up at night when it's cooler. Or maybe if you have a flat roof put vegetation on it etc. So many ways to keep heat out of your house without using electrics. And thus spending money.

My 25yo grew up in a home not that much dissimilar to yours and since starting work has not bought lunch, coffee or a new work wardrobe. This weekend she is camping with a friend in a National Park (free). I feel so proud that she is sensible and knows the importance of not letting money slip through her fingers.

Sounds like your 25 year old would like hanging out with my sons - doing frugal things and not spending a lot of money. Our grown sons are definitely frugal like us. Only they are smarter than we were. They are in their 20's and already thinking about long-term savings. It took a long number of years to get to that point.

I think we have done, and do, most of the things you talk about. I totally agree with you regarding the present buying for kids. We raised three children and presents were what you were bought for birthdays and Christmas. The only exception I can recall is one hot summer when we bought all of them a Super Soaker! Water fights kept them entertained for hours!

Very good tips! We do car lunches, just did one today. We buy a loaf of bread and cheese slices or sliced meat at a supermarket (or bread rolls but those make more mess in the car). We usually have drinks with us. Sometimes we buy cookies or saltine crackers as an extra. For dinner on the road, we like pasta or taco salads. When it's warm, we buy the vegetables fresh. Our favorite dinners on the road: macaroni with boiled egg, bit of ham, cheese and half an union finely diced with shredded iceberg. Penne with half a jar of sundried tomatoes in oil with fresh spinach. The oil makes a nice dressing. With feta when you want to go fancy 😉. Tortilla chips, a jar or can of chili and some shredded cheese is also nice. And we do Danish hotdogs. We bring a burner and warm them up on a safe place. On holiday we often make something simple next to a quiet road or whatever nice spot where we can park and cook.

I love it! We have always been a little unconventional that way, too. We have been known to bring along a small stove to warm things up. When we were first married, we had a really, small, portable one, which Larry used when he backpacked and hiked in the Rocky Mountains for two weeks. (It was a very long trip on which he realized he was tired of being single. He came back home and called me to ask for a date. I owe the Rocky Mountains a debt of gratitude. LOL!)

Amazing how little they spend if i give them money to earn and spend. My daughter recently took grandma to the charity shop to look for items before looking in the department shop. Very proud.

I'm enjoying all of your videos. I pretty much raised both of my boys the same way. Some things were different, but each family has their own unique situations, job changes, health issues, etc, that make things different for each family. My oldest finished college a few years ago, and moved a few hours away. My youngest followed in his father's footsteps and joined the military between his junior and senior year of high school. So, while his friends were enjoying their summer, my son was off to basic training. Then as soon as he graduated he was off to military school, and has since been to Afghanistan for 6 months, Texas for a year of border patrol, and will soon be leaving for Poland for a year. We never had help raising the boys. They were with us 97% of the time. We always lived away in other states. We didn't buy them cars, but helped. We didn't pay for college but helped. Thankfully they both qualified for scholarships with their grades. My husband grew up with video games and a computer when it hooked to the TV, so that was an area we didn't agree on. My parents wouldn't buy us those things in the 70's and 80's. I tried with the boys, but their dad over road on that one. They did have to save their own money to buy the gameboy, and then share it. Until middle school they shared the computer in the living room. No cell phones till driving, and it was the cheapest one. My oldest didn't get a cell phone till college. That's when we gave up the landline and went to cell phones. My husband and I had flip phones still yet and they were prepaid. It ended up being just a little more to have all 4 of us on the same prepaid plan. The boys bought their own phones after the first cheap one that we bought. My oldest wasn't interested in driving. At 21 I told him he better get with it before he graduated college. College was about 2 1/2 hours away. I see nothing wrong with any of your parenting skills or advice. Thankfully you and your husband were on the same page with everything . That definitely makes it much easier. If not, we do the best we can otherwise. I really enjoy your channel. It is very much how I was raised, and believe it or not it can still be done that way. I've had ppl tell me that I just got lucky having boys, or they were just easy kids. That infuriates me....NO, I HAD TO WORK HARD, and be intentional when raising them. It didn't JUST happen that they turned out independent, productive adults. More ppl need to watch your channel. My boys are now 25 and 22. I guess my only regret was not have 2 or 3 more children.

(From Larry) What a story, Shellie! You and your husband have done very well! You make so many good points. Children are not just good because they are easy kids, they are easy to raise because you have steered them in the right direction. Hope and I, like you, have worked very hard to achieve the goals we've set. We don't always agree on everything but find common ground to build on. Your two boys are about the same age as our oldest two. Hope you continue to enjoy our future videos.

@@larryware1 thank you. It was hard work, but well worth having 2 adult sons that still like to sit and have long chats with dear old mom. I do miss the little years....it seemed easier in some ways. Holy cow! That's hot weather. So, one option is to use fans in the rooms where you are sitting. Ceiling fans work really well for this if you have them. Statistically, you can raise the central air up to 4 degrees without any loss of comfort. Of course, you lose the benefit of the fan the minute you walk out of the room. However, if you are mainly in one room for most of the day, this strategy may help you.
