The tall upright thing is a colonial animal called a sea whip. There sure are a lot of halibut in Alaska. Here I catch a lot of flounder, this video shows me a lot of what must go on. Thanks!
@CaptainZacАй бұрын
Hi @martinchen3838 thanks for your help identifying the sea whip! There is so much biodiversity at the bottom of the ocean! Yes indeed - those flounder can quickly swarm a bait while halibut fishing. Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

That was Great! Great fishery, future is Bright for you! Do you fish for the flounder or is it, Why we've got Halibut? Thank for the Vid!
@CaptainZacАй бұрын
Hi @NRALifer1 thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this underwater footage! No I never specifically target flounder - I do catch them as bycatch while halibut fishing but always release these and wait for the big halibut to show up! Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

Excellent footage! just goes to show that even if you aren't catching that doesn't mean you're on the wrong spot. Would you mind sharing how you rigged up your camera to your line?
@CaptainZac2 ай бұрын
Hi @CodeNameRoger thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut footage! Yes indeed - there is often way more action on the sea floor than one might imagine from sitting in a boat. My rig relies heavily on trial and error and includes an underwater housing, lots of zip ties and a spreader bar. The footage clarity varies greatly based on depth, current, silt in the water, sunlight, etc... Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac very clever with the spreader bar. Appreciate you taking the time to share!

Amazing! I'm in a different part part of SEAK, but would to love whats beneath when I'm learning to fish my new hood..any details on your camera cost/setup/rig/etc?
@CaptainZac2 ай бұрын
Hi @fitzfamily2513 thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you are enjoying this underwater footage! My underwater rig includes a Go Pro 10 in an underwater housing on a spreader bar with various zip ties. LOTS of trial and error on camera angle and water clarity. Water clarity can vary greatly based on numerous factors such as depth, bottom makeup, current, glacial silt, sunlight, etc. - I've captured clear footage in 120 feet and totally black footage in 30 feet. Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

Have you fished any slow pitch jigs for halibut and rockfish? I've had great luck -- too many rockfish actually.
@johnbolton99572 ай бұрын
Been wanting to try spjiggin off the Oregon coast...
@CaptainZac2 ай бұрын
Hi @AKFish2023 I've used a variety of "pencil" jigs such as point wilson darts and p-line lazer minnows but haven't tried traditional slow pitch jigs yet. I know slow pitch jigs are getting a lot of attention right now so perhaps I should give them a try! Sounds like you've done very well on them for halibut and rockfish! Is there a particular brand, size or color jig that you prefer? Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
@AKFish20232 ай бұрын
@@CaptainZac I buy most of my jigs online from Johnny Jigs. Weight depends on depth and current, but a 200 - 240 gr. jig works much of the time. I typically start with All Glow or Katy Perry (blue and pink) to see what they want. Look at the Johnny Jig Torpedo or Flatty. Flatty has lots of action; Torpedo gets down quick. A genuine slow pitch rod is fun, but not really necessary for our fish.

Great insight here many thanks @AKFish2023! I just may have to add a couple of these to my halibut arsenal! Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

@johnbolton9957 spj works well off the oregon coast. You need to get on a boat that is willing to control the drift though. Most of the time the drift is way to fast. It needs to stay in the 1 to 1.5 mph range or less. I have caught several lingcod and a few rockfish on the 3 times I have attempted it. I have tried on the larger party boats but they drift way too fast to get the jig down and stay vertical.

What do you use for leaders?
@CaptainZac2 ай бұрын
Hi @Cntrmass thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you are enjoying this underwater footage! Typically, I run my jigs right from my main line to a barrel swivel. When I'm recording underwater footage, I have a spreader bar rig setup with lighter mono (50lb) so that if I snag the jig I'm more likely to break the mono and retrieve my camera. Does this make sense? Tight lines! Captain Zac
@Cntrmass2 ай бұрын
@@CaptainZac absolutely, I built some gear following your recommendations and others with split rings, so the hooks might snag, but I should be able to get jigs etc back. Looking forward to trying !
