Unexpected flash floods in San Diego destroys homes, roads

Residents in San Diego are recovering from a historic and bizarre bout of winter rain and flash floods. The city was struck with more than a month's worth of rain, in just six hours - destroying several homes, flooding neighborhoods and leading to hundreds of water rescues. NBC News' Steve Patterson is there.

So much of San Diego has always been hills and canyons. But over many decades they have filled in different canyons to build apartments and other buildings on. I'm sure it hasn't helped. Canyons were naturally made to allow huge amounts of water to move quickly.

Yes, ones morality and ethics should always be revisited and make the appropriate changes the best we can...Christian FEARMONGERING is on the way out. More rational thought will keep us out of all the CHRISTIAN BLOOD thirst in the middle east. Instead the USA can be a force for goodness.

@@zukipower9960 Several other comments on other San Diego videos said the same thing. I used to hike in a canyon in Lake Side, where my great Aunt lived in a small trailer. Once I was grown, it was filled in and apartments are there now. My family lived/lives in San Diego also, 2 and 3 generations. I grew up in Escondido later on. Anyway, my cousin said that particular area flooded also. My dad used to hunt squirrels and rabbits all over North Park area as a kid. And said in the 70's a number of small canyons he used to hunt in were filled. I guess you would have to look at old maps and compare them to now. But yes, canyons and low areas have been filled in. I'm not talking about areas of thousands of feet in width. But several hundred feet wide. like very deep washes. And maybe 50 or more feet deep. Easy to fill with old vehicles, large concrete from demolished building etc. Then soil on top and packed down.

That doesn't matter. What is your angle in this? are you suggesting building those apartments is the main cause? Because a logical person would understand those apartments are needed and what was lacking was a proper drainage system. I got news for ya. Canyon or not ANY place is phucked without a proper drainage system.

That was yesterday and it was catastrophic. Today the rain has stopped but the residents of the 42nd street will never recover. The river that runs behind the neighborhood!!!!! Don't build homes next to a river!!!!

San Diego is built wrong, I’m not from here but I live here. What I think the problem is, is that city hasn’t invested in the right drainage for these areas. Low “in the valley type areas” such as Encanto should have way better systems than they do. As much as rent is to live here.

I grew up there (born 1957) lived there until 1990. You're right, people have built without taking into account where water flows, and without proper drainage. They believe that because it is dry most of the time, that it will always be that way. NOPE. Rain falls and it needs somewhere to go. My sister still lives there, fortunately on a hill.

Yes I grew up In SD and so did my parents. I never heard of something like that. My mom used to talk of a flood that swept through our old neighborhood near El Cajon before I was born. So I guess there have been flooding before but decades ago. Definitely not common.

Everywhere from San Ysidro to San Luis Obispo that there was no proper drainage. I do plumbing in San Diego :) What you are watching is the worst of the worst. And this rainfall is the worst I've seen in a very long time. It happens from time to time and it's always the coastal areas, mountains and valleys the get hit the most.

You are absolutely correct 💯, but some states like Florida we have flood insurance but when it happens the floods the cancellation policies kicks in. So many people were stuck out last year during hurricane 🌀 season 😞. Let's keep everyone in the world 🌍 in prayer 🤲

Last year on February there was an unexpected snow storm or blizzard in San Diego. I was there staying at a resort in Coronoda. The day after I left the blizzard happened. Never happened before. Weird!

People saying this is why you need flood insurance. Keep in mind that most insurance companies here have pulled back coverage or no longer provide coverage.

It’s not even worth it to have flood insurance in NEW* Jersey. In particular, the Jersey shore, or any of the coastal areas of New Jersey. Most people could not afford flood insurance, or they were not going to be covered due to “special, stipulations” and it’s crazy because you can have a little tiny shack, that’s worth $3 million and won’t be able to afford flood insurance. Flood insurance got so expensive after hurricane Sandy that most people rebuilt without insurance, it was cheaper. That says a lot! Praying for everyone in San Diego. This is so sad and even though I’ve never been, I always thought that the weather in San Diego was sunny” perfect“

IMO - Laying down asphalt, house concrete pads, new roadways, sidewalks, and overpasses contribute to the problem. It is not only Mother Nature's fault. People tend to be naive about some of the causes.

it all happened because they didn't clean out the gutter system here in the south. Poway cleaned out their gutter system a whole month ago with dozers in anticipation of changing weather conditions. its almost like it was planned. i remember watching them take down all the vegetation cluttering their water ways off Poway rd and community rd water was able to flow freely and no flood damage occurred there

God’s sovereign hands protecting Us. Right around the corner the border patrol dealing with massive crowds people trying to cross Mexico. There are refugee camps everywhere and it’s not Mexico. It’s Russia, middl eastern nationals African black nationals. Trying to get in. They seeking assylum. Apparently. Which is lies because they would be drafted in their wars for their age. God flooding the area should be a sign for them turn and go home

That's part of the problem.of urbanization. Large parking lots etc. Funnel all that water into one place very fast.

Some states or cities do not invest in flooding immediately after heavy rainfall, which happens twice a year. They only invest when the loss of life increases and the situation gets out of control and is irreversible. San Diego has had the same problem for years and no one is looking at it! Millions, even billions of dollars in taxes are collected but no maintenance and no new creek and gutter improvements are done.We now need to learn to live with the abundant rainfall and cold weather associated with the El Nino weather change.

Clausius-Clapeyron Relation, for every 1.8 f of increased temperature, the atmosphere can hold an additional 7% of water vapor. Global avg temp has increased by 2.6f since 1970. More energy and moisture in the system, more chaos.
