One of the things that always gets me about the infamous Theismann's leg play isn't the tackle itself but the way LT reacted when he realized what had happened. This man, who gleefully spread wanton destruction on quarterbacks, seemed genuinely frightened at what he had done and was the first to call for a medic - hands over his head in terror.
@Bruinsbigestbear
@Bruinsbigestbear 3 жыл бұрын
To this day he can't look at the play. He still feels awful about it even though Theismann doesn't blame LT. It was a freak play, and LT was just doing his job.
@gluserty
@gluserty 3 жыл бұрын
Bill Parcells said something to the effect that Lawrence had a heart in there, so something like the Theismann play greatly disturbed him. Like what Wellington Mara said about L.T.: "L.T.'s no saint, not a lot of us are". What Harry Carson said about L.T.'s drug problem: "Lawrence has a problem. If he can't overcome it, then it's a problem bigger than him". Legendary player that changed the game and a pleasure to watch (I like the guy in general), but as the video stated, he paid a price for the way that he's wired.

I think he genuinely wanted to hurt the opponent, but as genuinely, didn't want to injure them. The problem being that when you the first on such a consistent basis, you most probably end up doing the second..But in the era he played, that was pretty much accepted wisdom for defensive players all across the field that trying to hurt the opposition was the name of game (Cf Ronnie Lotts).

4:10 Yes, it did affect his play. (You are taking the word of an addict in a 60 mins interview ...). Those of us watching football back then saw it week to week. He was inconsistent, esp in the middle of his career (he mentions this himself). He was also on cok in some of his better games and hungover in some of his worse games.

LT was the only linebacker I've ever seen that could completely dominate a game. He single-handedly beat up the Atlanta Falcons in 1984. The Falcons were 3-3 at the time and were expected to improve. After LT beat them down, they didn't win again until week 16.

Years later, I still wonder how incredible it would have been if my Saints selected Taylor instead of Rogers.Later in the same draft New Orleans selected Rickey Jackson, a six time pro bowl player(I'm certain he would've made the trip a couple more times if he played in a bigger market at that time)with 128 sacks in his own right.Can you imagine those two on either side of the defense with Vaughn Johnson and Sam Mills in the middle? I can, it looks good.

Got an opportunity of a lifetime after the 85 season. The Giants along with LT played a charity donkey basketball game in Rome, NY. I owned a restaurant they booked for a private party after the game. Partner and I took LT out for some local clubbing. It was a night I’ll never forget. He was just as cool, polite, and unpretentious as anyone I’ve known. Best part was nobody knew who he was, without the #56 uniform, he was just one of the boys!!! 12:30 - I've always felt the same way with that statement that we'll never see another LT because it just wouldn't fly in today's society. I always thought LB Aldon Smith of the 49'ers was similar when he entered the league, but today's media coverage exposed him sooner. I think if left unchecked, Aldon would've had similar on the field dominance like LT. But also the same destructive nature off of it.
