That song is is a hymn of Ukrainian resistance back in 40's. And he sang it at the moment he join Territorial Defense of Kyiv. This is a 100% volunteers units fighting russian army. Andriy Khlyvnyuk was wounded in the battle , but survive. Slava Ukraini!

Gilmour's daughter in law is Ukrainian. At the time of recording this song she was still trying to get her family out of Ukraine. The little girl dancing in front of David is his half Ukrainian grand daughter. So, this war is personal to David's family and he felt that he needed to help somehow. If there's still any current use for the Pink Floyd name, it surely is to raise awareness and funds for a cause like this one.

I feel like I could have had another fifteen minutes added on to the song. It brought to mind the song, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Two songs that for me convey much sadness while both of them convey a power through the choice of chords and their progressions. That business in Ukraine is evil and if I wasn't disabled I believe that I would have to rise up against the Russians, Putin in particular.

I wrote this before watching you final verdict, and I haven't commented on this song anywhere else before. So this is a pretty unbiased, unfiltered opinion. I feel a bit torn about this song. It's a new Pink Floyd song, which is per se good, however, I still I wish it wouldn't have to exist. The reason this song exists is the most terrible event in Europe since WW2. But it is a song, and it is music we can just talk about as exactly that and forget about the background for a second or two. The vocal part is awesome, I don't know any of this guy's music but his voice and style fits. Gilmours solo is pretty good, not in the Comfortably Numb class of solo but emotionally really great, it's like the voice, it fits. The rest... well, it's not bad but it's Pink Floyd and I would expect more (don't know how well the guys are doing, they aren't the youngest). From a pure musical perspective I would love to love this song more. Anyways, with all the historical background it's an amazing song. And I love Pink Floyd for doing that and David Gilmours for really early on clearly expressing his standpoint. Looking forward to hear your take on the song now. On March 26 Andriy Khlyvnyuk's unit came under mortar fire, losing two pickup trucks and Andriy receiving a shrapnel wound to the face. But everything is fine with him now. He recently returned to the Territorial Defense Forces.
