oh i thought i was the only one. it's crazy how i saw nothing about it once it ended, thought i was going crazy thinking it fell apart near the end there. art style was fantastic through and through, though

The art style is something I think COULD have worked but it very much feels like the animators weren't comfortable with it. The line widths are all over the place, characters don't feel consistently drawn between shots, and certain characters are significantly more well-realized than others. Like, I don't think it's fair to say "well this art style just doesn't work for serious storytelling" when Osamu Tekuza's main body of work was primarily dramatic. With a comedic flair, yes, but it's not like Astro Boy was nothing but Mickey Mouse and Betty Boop before the Pluto adaptation came out. I think if he committed heavily to the Tekuza art style instead of trying to mix in like five other influences, it would have worked far better and made it far easier to teach to the animators who could then actually render it correctly.

07:15 - "this kind of art style was never designed for serious storytelling" I don't think that's necessarily true though... from a western viewpoint it might feel that way, but it also has some very clear Osamu Tezuka reference, and there were some serious stories that came from that style of character design. Check out the animated Metropolis movie that came out in 2002 for a good example... serious story with very similar whimsical rounded designs. I'd still much rather have designs like these that stand out rather than designs that look like everything else currently out there. There can be an appeal in having a design that's so purposely dissonant from its thematic material, so I think this is chocked up to subjectiveness rather than a definitive statement on whether it *should* be for something like this or not. It's been a while, but I remember Symbionic Titan having similar exaggerated character designs, but people seemed to like it, though maybe having a more successful story/characters might have helped as well.

There's another problem, the WARRIORS ETERNAL are already IMMORTAL, so forcing random people to be possessed is just redundant

Me. This video is for me. I was super hyped for this show and was so disappointed, but I couldn’t find anyone who was talking about it. Until now! I honestly wouldn’t have minded if this was an hour long.

Spot on. I LOVED Primal, but I think a lot of that had to do with how well it told its story without dialogue. I can look back at the one episode of Primal set in England and see a hint of what wound up being UWE- awkward dialogue/characterization mostly. The most irritating thing to me was how the magical fox woman was worked up to be the main antagonist only to be dumped like nothing... why bother? Why not get rid of that character entirely and make a better connection to Melinda's mother from the start? Or are we supposed to believe the fox lady was her mother in disguise? There's really no indication what that whole thing was about. The tone is everywhere and nowhere. I feel bad for Spear and Fang because they lost family and keep on fighting to survive with one another's help. But heck, the only people I SHOULD be feeling bad for in UWE are Emma and Winston for having their lives needlessly upturned, but for some reason they feel the need to focus more on Melinda and Merlin. Emma being empathetic to Melinda's issues, but Melinda not seeing how she just basically ruined someone's life is... a choice the writers made. Not at all aided by melodramatic bug-eyed cartoon ham. All I can think of is trying to watch the scene in Lion King where Mufasa dies re-animated in the style of Popeye. Would not hit the same.

I feel like this perfectly sums up the situation with the show and is a great review! I really wanted to get into UWE after Primal ended the way it did, but the pacing and story was just all over the place. It's truly unfortunate because I still love how Genndy approaches storytelling. Just wish there was some editing and retooling in places to make cohesion a lot better.

omg I’m living for that odin’s beard nitpick cause that was me the whole series with all the mythological and timeline stuff, like how they supposedly start off in ancient Egypt but the arthurian characters and story are supposed to happen way closer to modern times than ancient Egypt. ofc there’s already issues with stakes and pacing but the way the show uses other cultures made it just feel like set dressing, with even the main steampunk setting feeling so inconsequential to the plot.

This feels like watching Gennedys personal journal and mind in action. The art, ideas and concepts are intresting but the structure of the writing is a little lacking.

Why wasn't Winston the main character of this show?

Despite whatever way we can interpret what was genndy setting out to do with this weird experiment. we can all agree he did the fox lady DIRTY in this series. the first few episodes setting her up as the poster girl and femme fatale mastermind that could have carried the series on furry fanfare alone just got unceremoniously stuffed in the fridge when the narrative shifted gears for no good reason. I think the only explanation would be the controversy of a manipulate woman antagonist, especially in this age of feminism basically ruling Hollywood at this point, last thing he wanted was feminists reeing over the fox lady being poor representation of strong female character, as if they were even watching to begin with, which is kind of pretentious in itself the more you think about his reason. the way she went out just doesent make sense given everything else we know about her preferring to lead from the shadows knowing she cant win in a stand up fights against all 4 of them, now suddenly willing to charge the heroes head on with reckless disregard for her own life WHILE SHE WAS ON THE RUN FROM THE LAW. But ironically it only made the series nigh unwatchable over the fact he cared more about his image rather than telling a compelling cohesive story. he was on record on suppressing his Russian-jewish ancestry to fit in to American society better. So hes not exactly what you would call a died in the wool iconoclast who sticks to his vision controversy be damned, in fact he is VERY self conscious and i think it reflects in his indecisive, last minute retcons that leave you wondering why he wanted to write this all himself if he was afraid of taking all the heat when this inevitably bombed.

This show was overall just meh. I like the designs and animation, but the story feels overly complicated and the characters to pretty inconsistent.

It was good the first half, then kinda flopped in the second. The only thing i hate about this was the use of love triangles.

Character designs in the show are hit or miss. Some are fantastic, some just take me out of the show.
