I live in Las Vegas and me and my wife go up that way all the time to go to the museum, we have some great pictures of the museum and the trains passing by.

Diesels are used for their dynamic brakes to keep the train under control easier especially through the mountains.

Its a matter of regulations and safety, Sure the steamers are capable of keeping a train under control but it really help when you have some modern help to stop the train if it needs to in a hurry. Also if the steamer breaks down there is a diesel to take over. The diesel has a toilet in the hood for the train crew as well, not that that matters but still. Finally the diesel is a status symbol for the railroad..

What a wonderful video of this beautiful locomotive and it's train. The diesels are there for two or three things. HEP power the old girl can't generate enough current to keep the trains cars in power. The modern engines supply dynamic braking something nice to have when you are engineering almost a million pounds of locomotive. And three, that beautiful machine is very old and even though it's been reconditioned and taken care of it can fail. The modern power units are a kind of "lifeboat" to get it all back to a station. Some people here and it's just a very few seem to think that the diesel engines a re pushing the loco and pulling the train. These people should think before they speak. Beautiful video my thanks for sharing.

What is the purpose of the utility poles and wires shown in the first 1 1/2 minutes?

trapezemusic Before the digital age the signalling systems used those poles to carry signal info between blocks and the controllers. Also way back they used a dedicated lead of wire on those poles for radio communications. Nowdays its all digital radio controlled and computers, those poles are literally rotting away.

I think having 3 diesels is a tad excessive. I understand 1 for braking purposes and insurance but 3 is too much...

they could have cut the crossing guard bells while they were stopped there...LOL The just turned them back on when it was time to leave, that would have gotton a little nerveracking after a little while.......

844 hasn't ever been retired, and I doubt it ever will at this point due to the absolutely horrendous PR such a move would make. What DID happen is that it went down in 2013 for a rebuild that lasted until its return in 2016.

I call it a big rip off if its really a diesel powered train and very high pressure too permit Southern Pacific steam on what was the old SP some fans are against this I call whats molorly rights some fans go to farr with this U P stuff I am a very openly minded rail fan.

I agree with you there's no point of seeing 3985 4014 or 8:44 because they're all just being helped there's no power from Spain there so I rather see 765 does not help raise there and it's doing all the work and it's been doing great at its job with no helpers
