Seeing 844 conquer this grade is rewarding, even though most of us know it is not even breaking a sweat. What is remarkable though, and not mentioned, is that this is a train moving over mainline trackage sans an EMD or GE helper. This just confirms what CTC, UP and The UP Heritage Group knows: this locomotive is still a major, reliable, stable and capable locomotive that can carry its own weight without any modern conveniences like a diesel electric helper.

Thx for the video. I love watching the steamers work. Even though this is a good grade the UP 844 isn't loaded much with the small number of cars it's pulling. The steam cut-off is set low showing again that this is a light load for the 844. The 844 is capable of much heavier loads. Good for UP for letting her live an easy life.

I have the last Union Pacific railroad spike it looks like a hair pin Union Pacific railroad had one made that’s made of stainless spring steel and it never rusted and I seen it laying on the side of the tracks in Utah I never seen one like that it’s from 1869 and it has TLS that means the last spike

Oil, actually. Steamers out west were typically oil burners since the climate was much drier, which allows for fires to easily start.
