May of 2019 is commemorable since the Union Pacific 'Big Boy #4014 is completely restored to operation and her first excursion run will begin in this month during the 150th anniversary of the First Transcontinental Railroad's completion!
To celebrate the reborn of UP #4014, we made this video of a causal "excursion race" between the UP Big Boy and an N&W Class A #1242 (instead of #1218), one of the N&W Class A that didn't survive from the torch; in memory of all the beautiful steam engine that didn't escape the fate of being scrapped.
Due to the limitation of Trainz simulator, both engines excessed its design top speed (a lot!).
The UP #4014 is a rather old freeware available on Trainz DLS.
N&W A Class 2-6-6-4 is a product of K&L Trainz.

Thank you for the question. I didn't touch the throttle of the 844 in the race so it was only 4014 vs N&W Class A. In Trainz a user needs to control *both engine in a doubleheader consist, unlike Railworks Train Simulator when both steam engine connected, the user only needs to control the leading engine. : )

844 was in neutral. This means the Big Boy was pulling 844. All the extra weight of 844 yet it still pulled ahead of the A Class.

BigBoy would out do the A on its own! Heck an Allegheny would out pull the A but it would be close. Now a BigBoy and a Y6 would be a match. Depends on Grade and if Speed matters. I do like the Y6 and the A though.

Good question! 😊 Yes, just as I mention in the description section, both engines excessed their design top speed due to the limitation of Trainz. Base on a test undertaken by A.A.R in 1938, It only requires 3800 to 4000dbhp for a steam engine to reach and maintain 100mph with 1000 tons passenger stock behind, so theoretically the Big Boy and Class A can easily reach 100mph when hauling 1000 tons stock. *But we know in reality, an articulated steam engine was not designed for speed and most of them seldom can reach 80mph. : )

Actually there was rumors that 844 accessed 134mph in the 40s and 50s but was never recorded

@@Jones3DModelingClub 100mph was actually possible. 80 was just the highest the Big Boys were recorded at. There's a video of an 8500 GTEL and Big Boy double header (GTEL lead, Big Boy helper) and looking at how fast the Big Boy's drivers were rotating, it seems to be exceeding 85mph. We've seen 3985 at 70mph, but in that certain video, the drivers of the Big Boy were rotating much faster than what they'd look like at top speed.

See cause of my name it may seem I don't know alot about steam engine s but if you put the big boy at 100 percent streanth it would go 100 mph but your at a risk at blowing the big boy up so they never reached it that high

@@ReverieMoonlight_I have also thought about that but I chose to not adding a Class J and kept the throttle of the 844 untouched during the race. If I remember 1218 double headed with 611 before it would have been a "double double-headed train race" 😜 But I forgot... 😓

I see a mistake: X4014 has a companion, and the A class does not. Should the 844 be removed or should the N&W 611 be added behind the A class?

844’s throttle wasn’t moved once, therefore putting extra weight for 4014.

Thank you for sharing your thought. Do you have any good suggestion on the whistle and bell? We are planning to do more video of 4014 but the model is rather dated, the only thing we can do is to reskin the engine and replace the whistle and bell. : )

Why a big boy vs N&w class A these were not at the same pulling power. A N&W Y6B or a C&O 2-6-6-6 are closer to the same pulling power. If you want to race try UP 844 vs N&W 611. By the way Southern Crescent ran a hundred miles an hour carrying 12 passenger cars between New Orleans and Washington DC . Southern Railway used only heavy PS-4 which are 4-6-2

I have a fanfiction race idea you can use if you like: A stormy afternoon, time 17:32, NYC Niagara #6017 and Southern Ms Mikado #4519 About to depart. A reporter looking for content gets on #4519’s train. A Woman on the Century with #6017 proclaims that the reporter is actually planning a stick-up and that he is a WANTED CRIMINAL on #4519’s consist, and plans to call the police to wait for the two trains, in hopes that he’ll be caught. Is it actually true what the woman says?

The reason for this is since Big Boy has the strength he got 844 up to speed and 844’s top speed is 120mph so once Big Boy hit his top speed, 844 took care of the rest of the speed

@@voidthe3f859 So _that's_ why 4014 and 844 had the higher average speed on the return journey! So, 4014 had the strength, and 844 had the speed, and those two locomotives had the perfect advantage over Norfolk and Western 1218.

Yes....................yes...........................YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *I see a fictional story coming to life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* [FICTION] The UP 4014 and UP 844 were heading home from the 150th Transcontinental Railroad Anniversary when the FEF-3 broke down. Emergency stop was underway but the engines would need to be at Cheyenne, Wyoming to do repairments. The 4014 will not only have to pull to excursion train but, the other engine as well. Along the way, they meet up with N&W Class A #1218 masquerading as #1242 for excursion on the N&S lines. The #1242 was surprisingly heading to Cheyenne, Wyoming for unknown reasons. Since the 2 engines were both heading their, a race was held to the place. Hopefully that should give at least someone a piece of imagination...........................................................................................
