How fast do you think this boat runs? Surface piercing props, BIG trim tabs and a sleek hull with air slots. Really, I have no idea, I am asking you? Want to learn how to dock an ordinary boat, click here - www.captainchr...

Boat was designed and built by Mark WIlson in Stuart, FL. Cummins powered with all the latest equipment. Built as a pleasure boat but also possibly to be sold as a military patrol boat. Fast and cool.

Arneson Surface Drives, (there are quite a few videos showing them in action here on KZfaq) are used in racing, and on high performance boats. There's a couple of fellows who run high speed crabbing boats near where I live, and they swear by them. Twin 400hp diesels are the norm. They cover as much as 120 NM a day. Saves them fuel, gives good performance can change a prop without removing the boat from the water and are of a very simple but robust design.

Looks like it goes pretty fast and kicks up a hell of a rooster tail! I heard surface piercing drives are challenging to learn and maintain but they are so cool 😎

No unice design, and this is a production model fram Arneson. Have been on the marked for ages. The scoops are intake for coolingwater for engines

These are Arneson surface drives popular in the 80s and early 90s. They are production units. Popular choice if you had a lot of horsepower on a heavy yacht and wanted to go like a true go fast boat in the day. Pair these with diesels or 1000hp gas engines and get that 50+ ft heavy boat to see 60mph or more.

I've only read about surface piercing propellers before, never seen them in real life but this winter, there's a boat with three of these next to my boat in the winter storage hangar. A real monster for which I wouldn't like to pay the fuel.

What these are. You mean a surface drive?
@angelamyra

It would be very hard to reverse this beast because the transom is straight up and down and the wash would just bounce back pushing the boat forward.
@AskCaptainChris
@AskCaptainChris 3 жыл бұрын
Mick Rumsby the down angle of the drive will allow them to reverse the boat. It can be done just like the flat transom on a sport fish that reverses when a fish is on the line. But slower is better to keep the water from coming in the cockpit.

@@AskCaptainChris The surface drives sit much higher in the water than a shaft or stern leg which is able to push the water under the boat. This is my boat the transom is on a 45-degree angle for this reason. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7F8drie2cXedZ8.html

cool video, you should do more videos on the operation of those surface drive system. They look very interesting, like a mini version of those mounted on the Thunder Child II speed boat. What kind of boat are they mounted on, out of curiosity. 🤔

Hope they didn’t mount the “trim shaft” anodes on top of the paint. Might be why they aren’t showing much wear, compared to the others.

I just saw this boat in the yard and I don’t know the service history but the zinc seemed to be eaten up a bit. And yes, the zinc should be applied directly to bare metal.

Very fast Arneson Drives ! Very fast. A specialty of Pershing Yachts ~ their newer models automatically trim the drives up and down. Keeping the propeller hub itself level with the waters surface is the trick. Hub in air no propulsion, hub is water less efficient. You will burn a lot of diesel 200 gallons per hour or more on some models.
@AskCaptainChris

Robert Frost I’m not sure if this is an arneson brand but yes it is the same concept.

What the the zincs for?
@AskCaptainChris
@AskCaptainChris 3 жыл бұрын
Sacrificial anodes so the stray electrical currents in the water would attack the zincs instead of the SS shaft or Propeller. Same for outboard units, they have a zinc or anode also.

nothing unique about them, they are production models from arneson, how do you not know this?

Because I see different designs and there are no brand labels on the units like you would see a Ford or Chevy.
