In this exciting video, we give an old, rusty, hiking axe a second life!
You'll see the entire hardening process, including preparing and heating the axe, and cooling and annealing it to achieve optimal blade hardness.
Once the hardening process is complete, we will proceed with the installation of the new handle by selecting the appropriate material and machining it.
You will learn how to properly attach the handle to the axe blade and make it ready for use. But, you will also see what difficulties I encountered.

You should have started again and put a new handle on it, Nothing wrong with making a mistake that’s what teaches us, Practice makes almost perfect.

Что-ж ты сделал, толстый гвоздь забил и расколол такую хорошую красивую ручку. Надо было сперва хотя бы отверстие просверлить как под шуруп, чтоб не лопнуло дерево.

Железку хорошо восстановили, вопросов нет. А вот топорище странное, грибок непонятный, изгиб не совсем правильный по отношению к режущей кромки. Ну и на обухе требовался шуруп, но никак не гвоздь, результат предсказуемый. Н Удачи в будущих проектах!

Или хотя-бы,засверлился троечкой, как-так, вроде опытный мастер,а так прикольно, сделал себе такой же , их на барахолке много еще встречается.

figured it was gonna split... should have drilled a hole a bit smaller than the nail! helps prevent splitting... beautiful axe though, fine job!

That handle will never hold up with that split. Your repair is inadequate for any real use of that hatchet. You should just start over...and don't try pounding a nail into a new handle again. Use a screw and drill a pilot hole first. Otherwise, your restoration was good.

Wonder why the cheek and eye portion was attached seperate from the bit and beard by the two obvious rivets? Might have to try and recreate this design. Note: the nail split would have been avoided by pre drillig the hole where the pin was nailed...

this is a Ukrainian oven, it was used more than 50 years ago :)

@@fredfry5100 Yes. As you can see, metal circles are like burners, just for different sized pots, pans or kettles. Also, there is an oven, which was used to make bread or traditional Ukrainian "palyanitsa"

Sorry the handle split. Blunting the end of the nail is an old trick to help not split the end of a board when driving a nail in it.... not sure if it would help driving a nail in the relatively thin piece of hardwood though.

After you put that glue in the split, you could have taken the nail out and clamped the heck outta the split and it would have closed up. The glue is stronger than the wood (if using a good PVA) and it’ll be good to go. Then drill a hole and put the nail in (for cosmetic more than anything).

That'll rust again due to there being two pins in the axe head that wasn't worked on underneath and that handle will split more then it already has best bet was to drill a hole before driving a nail in

It is a hand ax that is surprisingly weak in construction. The forge-welded part will be subjected to a large impact linear elasticity and will eventually be destroyed.
