Hello folks! Today, I have a new dagger restoration from the World War II era for you. This is the original German NSKK dagger. Such a thing came to me for the first time, it's very interesting for me to start working with it! Judging by the fact that the motto and the stamp were mechanically removed, there is no doubt that the dagger was a trophy of a Soviet soldier. Well, let's start the restoration.
I want to say initially, I will work with my hands as much as possible without a power tool. My task is to clean carefully and, if possible, give a new look and also save the old.
So, firstly, I disassembled the sheath and the dagger itself into parts. I used vinegar to clean the rust, and I used cleaning agents and warm water to clean the handle parts.
After the first stage of cleaning, I moved on to the second. For the details of the handle, I used dishwashing detergent and a toothbrush and a piece of wood. As much as possible to preserve the nickel that remained on the zinc surface of the parts.
I cleaned the details of the scabbard with a solvent and a rag. I cleaned the dagger handle with a cloth and drool so as not to damage the old surface. After work, I soaked the handle with linseed oil.
The dagger itself (where there was no etching of the brand and motto) I cleaned the scratches, otherwise, in order not to damage the brand and the remnants of the motto anymore, I used sandpaper with a grain size of 1000, 2000 and 3000 grit. To slightly clean the surface without damaging the inscriptions themselves.
I sanded the dagger scabbard, polished the upper part and covered the scabbard itself with primer, and then with anti-corrosion paint. After the paint dried, I gave it an older look.
After finishing all the work, I assembled the blade, lubricated the fastening ties with engine oil. I did not conduct the test, the thing is expensive and I did not risk it. I hope you enjoy this restoration video.
