When they landed, the footage used as it approached the apron just before stopping, you could see that it was LAX in the background.😊 But I love these old promo films. When flying was truly a luxurious event.

I noticed the landing at LAX too. Also, the SF landing approach is typically over the bay, flying in over the Dumbarton and San Mateo Bridges.

The DC-8 was a grand ship. Some are still flying even today 60 years after they were put into service.

Those were good times. It was a time when a kid like me could ask the stewardess/Flight attendant if we could go forward and see the flight deck and meet the flight crew. Sometimes, depending on the airlines, the Captain would sign our junior flight logs with the miles/hours we had amassed, and hand us a set of wings. I still have mine from BOAC. Great video.

They may have shown landing in SFO, but after they show the ground controller you can see the Theme Building at LAX.

Grew up on United DC-8's including many flights between JFK and LAX & SFO. They would put pass riders in first class and my favorite seat was F-4 in the first class lounge - best seat in the house. This rear-facing seat had a great view of the engines and unobstructed view below. It also afforded me many conversations with the pilots.

My street in the Oakland Hills was done in 1969. Most my neighbors purchased their homes new in their 20s for $25k. $1.5 million for one in bad almost unlivable condition foreclosure sale last month. SF is surprisingly cheap tho my friend just got a nice home in the sunset for under a million, and he used to rent a 2 bd there for $3500. The South Bay though not so cheap lol.

The "Whisper Jet" was the Boeing 727 with the 3 engines at the rear if I remember correctly.

One of the best planes ever built. Fast with the JT3’s and even faster with the CFM56. A few interesting facts. United was the only carrier that had a nesting system installed in their DC8’s. The nesting system was a baggage container system. It worked well but us to break a lot due to some abuse. A real pain to work on it. United also had one of their planes over speed and damage the wing spars. The DC8 (with the JT3’s) was the only jet that I know of, that deployed it’s inboard engine thrust reversers in flight to slow down the plane. The DC 8 was also a workhorse. A real dog by today’s standards but a hell of a plane in the 1960’s.

That poor dog must have been horrified. A bygone era of airline travel here. Everyone dressed neatly and clean. No dirty slobs or screaming babies then. Just a very enjoyable time for everyone.

As of March 2019, UA801 is a non-stop flight from SFO to RDU. Aircraft used is the Airbus A319.

In my opinion Pan Am represented the best of United States prestige across the globe. They were the Emirates of the day. I'd say from the 1930's to the late 70's.From introducing the Boeing 707 to the 747 you really have to admire the way the company was so organized, and run by Juan Trippe.Pan Am represented America overseas, flying to over 86 countries, that blue globe livery was widely respected. I would have loved to have flown with them. My dad did however fly with them, and said it was his best flight ever from LHR-JFK in Feb 1980. He said you barely knew you were in the the air, and the service was fantastic. He also said everybody on board were polite and well mannered. Their demise was horrible.Surely the brand could have been saved , but i suppose Delta was having none of it. Like an Air France/KLM type of organization ( separate branding , but sharing profits etc). I suppose American economics were totally different 30 years ago. Also coming to their end just 10 yrs after Mr Trippe's death. Must nip over to Miami to visit the Pan Am Aware store. Jeff Kriendler compiled a great book : Pan Am Personal tributes to Global Aviation Pioneer. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has in interest in Aviation or a aircraft geek like me!

Thumbs Up! My how times have changed in the last 58 years. The seats in this video are HUGE! and so are the meals. Now passengers are treated like cattle.

I remember not more that 30 years ago a wonderful UAL DC-8 flight PDX to JFK, I was spoiled from coach from that day on...

Enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing. I like to look up information about aircraft when I see the tail numbers and noticed that plane making the 360 degree turn from the gate near the beginning had a different tail number than the one that arrives at the destination at the end. The departing plane flew with UA for 20 years then was scrapped. I only flew on a DC-8 a couple of times, including a memorable trip from Chicago to Vegas on UA around 1987 or 88. The airline retired whatever they had left of them not long after that.

The best part was the voice over. It was written by Paul Hanna (famous for the Dick and Jane books). He and his wife commissioned a house by Frank Lloyd Wright.

If you're willing to fork over an arm and a leg, there are some airlines still ofller seats like, if not better than that. Deluxe seating today costs what a ticket back then would, adjusted for inflation.

Amazing if her could even be heard with all that noise. A jetliner of comperable role today puts out at least as much power, with a single engine as all four on the DC8, while making a lot less noise, and still is loud enough for ear protection to be mandatory. Of course OSHA was still over a decade away in 1961, so ground crew safety wasn't as important. Oh, and there is no way, that at least one of those turbojet engines wasn't turning enough to power the cabin. APUs weren't a thing for jetliners of that size yet.

Yes. You are right. This plane had a maximum service ceiling of 42.000 ft. I am wondering why they said they where fliying at only 28.000 ft.

It's interesting that they loaded from the rear as well as the front. Makes sense, wonder why we only load through one door or at most 2 if it's a jumbo but always from the front.

I noticed that the plane was not 'pushed back' from the gate but turned around itself and headed out to the runway. Why do they now have to be pushed back by a small truck?

Now days gate space is at a premium, so aircraft have to come into gate nose first in order to fit more gates and aircraft into the terminals. It is possible for aircraft to back out of gates using reverse thrust, however such a practice uses more fuel and the engines stur up much debris FOD as it is called. Hence that is why pushback tugs and towbars are used. Worked in the industry.

Yup, saves fuel and space. Our local still occasionally does self-turns on the regional jets without tugs. Back when American was running the MD-80's they'd do it too. I grew up with open gates and getting blasted by the 727's and 737's in the 60's. Loved hanging on to the rail and feeling the wind of burnt jet fuel.

Airports are servicing more jets now, than ever before. There's no room to turn around even an Embraer 135, let alone any of the big jets. Also, High Bypass Turbofans suck in massive amounts of air to produce thrust, they engines will be destroyed by debris if they try and push a plane e back from a dead stop at the gate.

Anyone else notice that the plane landed in LA, not SFO, and that the serial number was different? Ah, to be a kid flying 1st class with seats that REALLY reclined. It wasn't quite like that yesterday when I flew to competition from San Fran to Atlanta. But yeah, I remember those early days.

I know this is going to show my age the first airliner I ever flew on was a delta DC-8 I remember it like it was yesterday sat just in front of the wing where you could see the engines big roomy seats sadly not like the last time I flew Delta🤔😞

Seats were so big then, and passengers carried so little, you didn't need overhead bins. Now, with baggage fees, and minimal cabin service overhead bins and underseat storage have are a necessity for most passengers in economy class.

Those old DC08's and 707's had REAL jet engines, worked like Rockets, not like the turbofans of today. You can tell cuz the old engines are skinny like cigars. The took the plane to almost 600mph, much faster than the 767's of today.

Not really true. 767's cruise at 486 knots or 559 mph, DC-8's had a cruise speed of 556 mph, pretty much the same. Remember a turbofan is basically a turbojet like the early DC-8s had with fan mounted on the front driven by the shaft with a essentially a big pipe around it shroud the fan. I agree that nothing sounds like the turbojets or low bypass turbofans.

It’s not about the thrust but rather the Mach number and drag. As the aircraft gets into the transonic region, drag greatly increases and you begin to get localized supersonic airflow.

The first time I flew was TWA, round trip from Chicago to Phoenix in 1980. I thought it was great. Now, I don't like air travel very much. Haven't flown in 2 years. Too much of a hassle.

The only remarkable thing about this short film is the decorum and manners of the passengers. The cabin service is nice and all, but this is first class after all, it should be that way. Comparably speaking, first class today is just as good, if not better, given creature comfort innovations, such as IFE’s and lie-flat seats. Today’s aircraft are also more reliable and safer as a result. The thing with we old timers is that we miss the way people used to behave back-in-day. You can’t build and sustain a great nation with undiscipline people. You also can’t give away your industrial strength (outsourcing) to other nations as well without serious, long-term economic repercussions.

Loading baggage into pods for loading on the plane. Looks simple, does any plane ever use that anymore? Probably not, as any delay in getting there baggage makes impatient people upset. Visiting the gate to see you friends board....those were the days. No metal detectors, oh the humanity of it all.
