This is an exercise that I created for myself when I was 16 years old and my parents had just bought me a used 7 foot Brunswick Bristol 2 pool table for our basement. This will help you with basic cue ball control and shot selection, concentration and discipline, and get you used to clearing the table, whatever the game may be.
Your 14.1 Straight Pool game will improve as will your 8ball and 9ball games plus all the games. It's just an awesome exercise to make you a better pool player, I promise you.

A variation On this we use is call shots. Call 3. Call the next 3 shots. If you make the three shots you get 2 points for the balls you pocketed previously. After each shot you add another call shot so you always have 3 shots in the pipeline. Every shot you make now you get a point. Points are for the previous balls pocketed. I do this by myself or with a friend and keep track of my runs. To add more difficulty add to the called shots. Make it 4, 5 or whatever you want. If you make your 3 shots add one point. Every 3 shots in a row add another point. If you miss you have to start your run over or it's your opponents turn.

Great video Max. I usually start with this drill but only one rack, to warm up, then proceed to other drills. I can see how running multiple racks can be a great tool for practice on many types of shots, so I'll try to incorporate this into my practice routine. Seventy-two years old and still learning. Thanks Max!!

I started doing this about two months ago and it has really helped. I honestly did not think this would help me as much as it has. The idea of moving the ball around as little as possible is the key. It makes you think and you end up with many different types of shots. And the challenge never ends - as mentioned you need to challenge yourself to get your runs as high as possible. This drill is good for eight, nine, and 10 ball along with some of the other games. But for me it has really helped my eight ball game.

This is a great exercise. It’s more difficult that I thought it would be. I’m always sending the cue ball all over the table and I think this’ll help me with that.

I've been doing a more casual version of this in my past few practices, after I did nothing but stroke drills for several weeks. I can't run a whole rack yet; for now I'm just enjoying my improved mechanics, often taking the harder shots, and getting a better sense of what happens when I use different types of spin. This looks like the natural next step for my practice sessions.

“Call ahead” is a great modifier. Sometimes when drilling with different skill levels, let’s say I’m a 6 and I’m drilling with a 3, I have to call ahead 3 balls. Rather than modifying the race or some other handicap

I love this drill. I do the same drill but also sometimes choose the solids or stripes in concession and then the 8 ball as if I’m playing a match. This drill does help your game in many ways and it also helps with cue ball control and speed. Thanks for sharing Max. Would love to see some tips on banking long and short rail banks. I struggle with long rail banks the most.

Great videos. Clearly a novice question, why not break and run out like 8-ball? If that's what you're used to playing. Or is that just a different frame of mind? But the more i watch this video, i can see exactly where you're coming from. Just great stuff, man. Thanks for taking the time.

I started doing this out of boredom, I may not be that great of a shot, so I added if I miss I owed a ball and if I scratched I owed two set back up like one pocket for placement.

Hey Max. I have learned alot by watching your videos. Ever thought about putting a cue ball image on the screen showing where your cue is striking the cue ball ?

As a straight pool fan, I like this drill a lot. For one thing, it's easy to set up for the amount of training it provides. Can you give me a rough correlation between how may consecutive racks without misses (using this drill - not connecting racks with a break ball) and player skill level (for example, three full racks = a B+ player - or similar)? I think such a mapping might be a useful metric.

This is just what I needed gets my touch back on those soft draw shots with an just an inch or two of movement on the cue ball. Love all your videos Max. I like another 15 ball drill also. Where you put the balls at least one diamond from the rail and run out without touching the rail with the c u e ball. Teaches you to hit the cue ball softer . And makes you pick the sequence wisely. Thanks a lot Max

You’re welcome Commander, was that 80 balls in this format, or in 14.1? Man I love playing pool in a bowling alley if it’s a good 9 foot gold crown. Something about the sounds and atmosphere there…

i usually start with 2-3 racks of this drill before i move on to my next drill myself. it usually depends on how i'm doing if i move on or stay in this drill. stroking and potting are my 2 main goals when practicing.

I see that you drop your elbow on just about every shot. Do you find that interferes with good action on your draw shots or do you control for that?

I tried this drill last night and didn't manage to run them all out even once. What to do when you have no available easy shots? Reset? Or take ball in hand but don't count it a success after the last ball is pocketed then reset for next attempt? Thanks.

Obviously max is an exceptional player world class champion as joe rogan calls him and that indeed he is. I just want too know why you have such a short stroke and hit balls hard on lots of shots? looks like your forcing the cue ball. I know it works for him and thats all that matters but im sure he has a reason for it id like him too explain the reasoning behind it if he could id love too hear it.. maybe it could help my game tremendously..
