It was hard, but I had to do this in my early 20s. My to be mother in law was so mean to me and my fiancé didn’t have the balls to take up for me. His mother gave him a trust fund and he loved that more than he loved me. He turned out to be a deadbeat loser. Dodged a bullet Abram Wellons.

When I got married in 1984 I was 19 years old. My in-laws made early judgments on me because I wore dresses all the time. Eventually through the years I got to know them and they got to know me! I just liked wearing dresses. I felt good in them. That’s it! No hidden agenda. There were other things too. We grew to love one another. The year before her son and I divorced I went to visit her, with my daughter, who was 17. My husband wanted to stay home. We drive a couple of hours and my daughter and I spent the weekend with my mother in law. Loved every moment we had together. That was the last tune I ever seen or spoke to her. Her son and I went through a pretty terrible divorce after that visit and a few years later she passed. I sent her a card once after we divorced but I never heard from her. I understand she needed to support her son during this time. What hurt though is he wanted the divorce, he was having an affair and wanted to be with her and I gave him the divorce he wanted yet somehow I was the bad guy.

When I see someone being quiet in a chair at a gathering, I never assume they are "pouty" or "moody", I see someone shy. If you make a safe space for an introvert, they open up at their own pace. I get the feeling the mother in law was judgemental and chilly from the beginning. How horrific that she (mother in law on stage) had NO problem with her son threatening violence against this woman on national TV. Even in the 80s that threat alone was illegal in many states. That was so disturbing. PS I had the greatest mother in law. She's been gone a year and a half. I miss her every day.

With all due respect, I have to disagree with you on that statement. Not all disabilities are visible. You absolutely cannot judge someone’s disabilities solely on what you can physically see. Also, I didn’t hear anything about the wife working. If he was at home with the kids, there shouldn’t have been any reason that she couldn’t get a job. That would have been two incomes in the house. Even if one of those was a disability check. It’s still a household income. * I would like to add that…. No I am not a disabled person, and I do work two jobs, 7 days a week. So this is not in my own defense. This is just me trying to educate people on invisible disabilities. People with invisible disabilities constantly have to feel judged and made out to be liars, or like they are trying to screw the government. It’s very hurtful to them that they have to feel the need to defend themselves to people that are so close-minded and judgmental just because they can’t physically see their disability.

My mother loves my husband and my MiL loves me. I cannot imagine marrying someone and causing this type of disruption in their lives. I make sure my husband is checking on his mom and we try hard to share our lives with our parents. It’s not difficult or exhausting because everyone knows their place. I didn’t steal anyone’s son. He’s not your man or your property. People need to understand that they serve different functions.

Married for 25yrs, together for 29yrs. For the 1st 8yrs my mother-in-law and I didn't get along AT ALL. Then one day I decided; I'm tired of all the fighting and made an conscious effort for us to become closer, get along and just be a happy extended family. And today I don't regret it. My mother-in-law passed away 4 and a half yrs ago and I still miss her, her advice, the stories she used to tell us about when she was young. I just miss that woman so much 🌹😥

Dr. Phil has some really good shows on meddling in-laws, too. They really make me appreciate and miss my in-laws even more. Even after we divorced, they still treated me like family until the day they died. His siblings do the same. In fact, I just saw my ex brother-in-law yesterday. He gave me the biggest hug. He's visiting my 2 kids and their families plus his brother in the city. He took ALL of us to lunch yesterday and it was also his way to visit with me, too. All of his siblings still treat me as family. I miss my MIL and FIL SO much since they've passed away!! I've been truly blessed!!! 💝

It's funny you say they look like twins, I thought they looked similar. And because of that, I'm torn if the situation is either A) just the MIL, or just DIL who started the hostility, OR, B) if it's both of them and the MIL just finally met her match. Which would make sense, people love to marry a person whose basically one of their parents, so them kinda looking alike is making me think it's B

@@jeanogrady9546 my point is talk shows today don’t have audience participation, certainly not as many interruptions as Oprah does. The person comes on to talk about their life and the audience claps or nods, not time for me to talk about my life. I love classic Oprah!

With this episode airing almost 30 years ago, I must have forgotten how fast-paced The Oprah Show was and how chaotic it can be. So much is left unfinished with very little progress, yet it was still fantastic to bring attention to these topics and at least start the conversations. Oprah must have been exhausted at the end of this particular episode.

I know why we get our feelings hurt and why we get so disappointed in what others do or don't do. It's because our OWN expectations have not been met. Our egos are soooooooo fragile that they require soothing from someone outside ourselves. I'm speaking from life experience. When I dropped my expectations, my feelings got hurt less and less. II'm not hardened or bitter, just mature enough now to know that others had their own expectations of me that I had not met either. Be okay with yourself and your own decisions throughout life and allow others the same then there will be peace. 🌹

The Aunt that fill her shoes to be our daughters grandma so she would have a grandma was equally wonderful! Until we lost her. When our daughter was 10 I miss both women I've been blessed! This is a woman who is entitled because she has never been told "no." And her fake "I am so distressed" is very transparent.
