I always thought of them as proto slime people, similar to the mother gum. If fire and Ice are opposites, then candy and slime are as well, and you stated how the mother gum represents good while the oozers stand for bad. The oozers that roamed the land of Ooo eventually evolve or produce a more advanced elemental creature (just like mother gum did) while the ones that get buried in the earth are preserved and stagnate until something disturbs them. Also ooze is just another word for slime :)

The oozers we see in the princess bubblegum episode look much more abstract and deformed than the oozers in the past episodes. In the Marceline episodes you can see how they used to be humans, but not anymore. Perhaps they are immortal, but their bodies and cognitive abilities degrade over time because of the radiation, a slow destructive existence. Another thing is that maybe they aren't immortal, and the oozers we see left in the pit are all that remains or the last few poor soul who got themselves bit.

I think a big part of it is the fact he is a candy person, not like us humans, and thus effected differently, the mutating effect still stays even when they combine- i mean them combining as quickly as they did is not normal for candy people, especially cuz they are like, ice cream cookies or something right? their material isnt even supposed to combine, i think its the oozer effect on candy people, yes they can get infected, but add enough sugary mass, and it mutates in a less fatal way

It was my interpretation that all candy people were oozers that have been candified. We see bubblegum filling in radiation with candy in a flashback, and in the first episode candy people resemble oozers when zombified. These things must be related somehow.

Their fate reminds me to the gem mutants from Steven Universe . They want to get whole, but they are unable to see what is needed. They keep suffering, trying to escape the forced fusion

CANDY is the cure for oozification. As seen in the Shoko backstory episode, PB uses candy to neutralize the radioactive mutagenic river around the young candy kingdom. The same phenomenon is shown in the James episode where the combined candy biomass of all the James clones dilutes the radioactive ooze enough so that it doesn’t affect any of them.

It makes absolutely no sense looking back at it now, but as a kid I always thought of the oozers as some form of corruption of the mother gum. Probably because they were both sticky goo creature in the same episode.

Seeing Simon in this episode i never noticed until now that Simon had some gum in his pocket meaning the mother gum already met Simon or part of her did i don’t entirely know how the mother gum works but it might be able to see through simpler gum forms than princess bubblegum so maybe thats why the mother gum help get them the soup later

Regarding the immortality idea, there was a primordial monster in that vision Sweet Pea showed KOO and Toronto, and "primordial ooze" is a common phrase, so they could be a combination of human and animal life, radiation, and some kind of direct Primordial intervention. What if they were cult worshippers of this Primordial before the Mushroom War and this was their "reward"?

It's possible that the oozers in the pit from the James episode aren't just human but possibly other creatures that fell into the pit and got added to the group, this is why some are less humanoid than others Oozers are likely immortal, but not invincible... which is to say that in optimal scenarios they do live forever.... but stuff like accidents, natural disasters, and being attacked can damage their body in ways that can't be repaired

Cataclysm: Dark days ahead. Has some creatures like the Oozers, but here the main point: what you see, the Oozer, isn't it's true form but the shell of the creature they are inhabiting. Their real form is the green "Ooze" you see dripping from every hole they have. Basically Oozers bite a victim to inject Ooze, which corrodes and consumes everything [inside] the victim, turning it into a [Husk] the Ooze now can inhabit so it can gain the ability to move and attack new victims.

The oozers were without a doubt humans based on the Marceline and Simon episode but in the pit it looks like those might’ve been ppl or maybe mutated beings trying to live for survival similar to Marcelines mother trying to find a bunker in the dessert. When Marceline was a kid with her mother I thought there were already some different beings that looked similar to human. We see that Marceline is the only one who stayed there and maybe those humans could’ve been the ones trapped under the dessert sand. Maybe overtime the sand did mutate their appearance but with James I think he was different from the rest was because he was mutated way WAY into the future. We see in the ep when they’re in the Candy Kingdom that some don’t really seem to want to fight/know how to they’re more curious of the other life. Very different from before where if they even saw another living being they would instantly go in to attack them. They could’ve been curious abt the candy ppl but I feel like they’re definitely different from the ones where Simon and Marcy lived.

I thought it was a case that James in being a new oozer wasn't fully finished, that the body goes first and the mind is slowly lost, a dark picture as the person slowly slips away loosing themselves to the radiation (horror stuff particularly japanese horror does this often were a person will seem fine, or fight the transformation drawing it out longer before losing themselves and inevitably killing many former friends/fellow survivors). Furthermore, as a candy citizen born to fully serve PB the instincts to find her and obey would be at war with the pack instinct gone wrong as you put it. Kinda like in horror films where a zombie or monster that was orginal human will be in very rare stories retain fragments in order to protect a child as the paternal/maternal instinct won the war over the instinct to hunt.

Assuming all the Oozers (sans James) are human in nature and it is an infectious mutation, then James wouldn't get affected by it in the same way. I personally think James got infected and started to mutate, but since the mutation wasn't calibrated to candy people the mutation's transformation needed more time to complete. The James amalgamation likely reformed the mutated parts of OG James when rewriting it's own structure, similarly to how the immune system sets out to destroy cancer cells when it becomes aware of their existence.

I like to think that deep down they're still people but just lost in the sauce you know perhaps inside all oozers still remains humanity though it is smothered by pain confusion and loneliness they can't talk to each other and I don't know why, but even in packs they give me a feeling that they are alone each one a captive in a body they can't understand maybe the reason they bury themselves is they're waiting to decompose morbid I know, but if they are immortal wouldn't you wish for such existence to end it's a sad crushing existence and I don't think a cure exists the body is too far gone all that's left is ooze and echos

A large number of the residents of Ooo seem to be mutated humanoids. Do oozers eventually mutate into less hostile beings?

Not a scholar of Adventure Time, but if I could venture a theory: the slime elemental was uniquely suited to adapting to radiation and thus tried absorbing and integrating the immense radiation of the mushroom war. The result of that effort is oozers and a tightening between the element of slime and the alignment of chaos. Candy consequently became the element linked to the order alignment which is why PBG is sometimes good, sometimes evil, but always in control.

I think that when someone becomes an oozer by being bitten by an original oozer, they aren't on the same level of mutation as original oozer as they experience less radiation ( James's case)

Maybe James had memories and could ‘speak’ as he was turned recently, notice how his body is basically the same with just a bite taken out of him and skin turned green. I think these guys decline in appearance and condition fairly fast, but james was new. Notice how the human like ones are very bulbous and deranged co pared to james, some have multiple legs also, maybe threw fusion over time or from the blast.

I would't say they behave like classic zombies,instead,they behave more like fast zombies (infected),in Simon and Marcy they clearly can run. In fionna and cake spinoff,they moan like humans being in constant pain.

I wonder if James was cognitive because he was a young ooze. In Distant Lands: Obsidian, Marceline leaves with her mother, who has radiation sickness, to go live in a bunker. Marceline ends up alone in that bunker for long enough that she presumably runs out of food (but also, not so long that she visibly ages. Based on how she survived 1000 years as a non-vampire in Farmworld, she probably ages 10 times slower. So somewhere in the range of 1-10 years). Seeing as the show progresses 7 years in its 10 seasons, and that James II is early in Season 6 while James is late in Season 5, it’s reasonable to assume only a couple months passed between those episodes. Meaning that James retained some cognition over a few months as an Oozer. Compare this to the flashback Oozers post-mushroom war. We don’t know when they appeared, but if they were the reason why Marceline and her mother fled to a bunker, then most oozers existed at that point for long enough that Marceline had eaten through the supplies of an entire bunker. Perhaps at that point, they had lost all cognition and were incurable of the condition.
