Unreal Engine July 2024 Free Assets

It's the first Tuesday of the month, so that means it's time for more free Unreal Engine stuff! Each month Epic Games gives away a number of assets for Unreal Engine developers and this July 2024 is no exception. This month we have 5 new assets that are yours to keep forever if "purchased" before the first Tuesday in August.

For the buggy level in WorldDirectorPro, it is caused by an unlucky setting in it. In that level, the BP WorldDirectorNpcPRO has a Max Distance Show Simulation set to 35000, which is way to high, reset it to its default, which is 15000, and that level will run smooth :)

Not sure what's happening with that second npc spawn demo, but you can see that it keeps loading more and more npcs in the background, over 2000, then dumps them and restarts adding more. That seems like what is making that demo chug. Maybe it's a way to test your system for how many you can handle.

I remember looking at the character controller system. But I usually end up building my own, since it just seems like less of a hassle most of the time. But it will be interesting to see how it was put together, and more of the same for the plugin's.

Pretty good month IMO. Nothing spectacular, but a lot more interesting than some months. As usual grateful to Epic for everything they've given us over the years, and to Mike for continuing to remind us to grab them, and showcasing them for us. It's a good time to be in the hobby.

Give it a few minutes. I had noticed they were updated in the Free for the Month, but I didn't notice they weren't free yet. It should be updated any minute now (10:00 AM EST) Sorry about that.

for some reason those assets don't appear on the homepage and when I click on the "free for the month" dropdown it shows them paid, but this is a nice combo for starting a new project

I've noticed the best looking scenes in unreal are when there is no sunlight.. if you notice that all the best and realistic scenes are when the weather is overcast, and no sun or shadow !

Obviously, visual assets are easier to export. Have you thought of a more "experienced guide" to look at the shaders or particular blueprints that might come across next? Are there tools that are doing well as easing that transfer? (coughgodotcough) Thanks for the asset reviews as always! 💚

This is such a bad take. There’s no universal “what we need”, everyone’s needs are different. Unless you have a dedicated modeller, then you absolutely need an environment pack. This is even more true if you’re a solo dev and actually program your own gameplay, in which case gameplay packs are mostly counterproductive.

@@MEMUNDOLOLhe can’t program though. It seems he wants an entire gameplay system he can drag and drop into the engine and ship. I understand their use if you have zero programming skills, but if you can program then you’re probably right, they should probably be avoided.

This month's giveaway looks good, there' something for everyone. There are realistic and sci fi assets that I can use and not just stylized/low poly assets only.

Magical shields look ok, the rest is crap IMO. You're better off making your own effects. Also I recognize some effects from magical shields from old tutorials. The mediterranean coast pieces look OK, but that example world was shit. You'll need more tree varieties and ground textures to blend in to make it look good. The cell shaded stylized environment looks good, but kind of plain, but that's fine if that is all it's offering. The low poly environment looks OK as well; but where have I seen that before? The 3rd environment, the one that bugged out, looks really nice. Of course these are just my opinions, and I'm sure your opinions may differ and that's cool with me.

it uses lua and unreal script. its built on c++

C++ is language that's been around for almost 40 years and still in demand today. UE also includes the option to use blueprints which is not really difficult to learn.

@@marsmotionit does not use lua or unrealscript. It uses c++ and blueprints and soon Verse for game logic, c++ and blueprints and python for editor scripting.

For those facing lag or drop in frame rate even on an empty new level in unreal 5.4 just go to plugins and and search studio telemetry and disable it and restart unreal 99% of the time it fixes that lag issue. Give it a try!

Ahhh crap, give it a few minutes. I saw that the Free for the Month category was updated, but they aren't set to $0 yet. I may have jumped the gun by a few minutes... I expected by 10:00AM EST ( 6 minutes from the time of this comment) they should be live AND free.
