The street running track on Macarthur Blvd in New Bedford, MA was rebuilt in 2014 but never used. This video shows some photos of the 2014 rebuild and then skips to 2022 to show some today shots of the track. At the end of the street running track is the former power plant that will become an offshore wind facility. I am unsure at this time if the off shore wind facility plans to use rail or not. While not officially abandoned these tracks were last used in the 70-80's timeframe.

My feeling is near-port rehab projects like this help improve the port's ability to bid on future projects. Even if unused or underused in the near term. Get the money where and when you can, and add a bullet point or two to the port brochure.

I remember seeing trains on that when I was very young. I was surprised they were rebuilt during the construction. They end near an old power plant; there have been many plans to reuse that building that never came through. At the time the tracks were rebuilt, the now defunct Cape Wind project planned to open a facility near there. Maybe that’s the reason for the rebuild.

They used to be the old trolley tracks.

No, these were freight. There were trolley tracks in New Bedford but located elsewhere .

They do transport the wind turbines by rail, so yes, most likely they will be used whenever that project goes into effect.

I bet it was rebuilt for war infrastructure and national defense. Certain rail lines are kept in a state of good repair for war measures.

Funny how they left the right handed switch in.

It's less expensive to spike a switch in position than replace it if they don't need to.

Most wind turbine blades are delivered by rail due to their size, so perhaps they'll need to use it for the off-shore wind farm.
@SouthCoastRailVideos

That is a possibility. It is likely that they’ll come by ship as the harbor can accommodate such large blades more easily.

Wow. What shame. I hope trains get the opportunity to run down those tracks. That would be so cool.

I barely remember the old waterfront, the approach to the bridge, etc. Even after the area was revitalized in the seventies I don't recall seeing cars down there then, but maybe I'm forgetting. P.S. where does the Coast Guard tie up now?

Tracks are not abandoned. They are owned by The New Haven RR. The roadway has permission to use the ROW, not the other way around. If the street needed improvement then the property owner must be taken care of. In this case the New Haven RR.

The State of Massachusetts owns the tracks and they are leased to the Mass Coastal Railroad. The New Haven ceased to exist in 1968.

@@SouthCoastRailVideos Penn Central absorbed the New Haven RR shortly after the merger. I'm not sure if "the remainder" of Conrail still owns the New Haven RR, following the breakup of "Big Blue" in the early 2000's.
