Have to respectfully disagree with you regarding cost effectiveness and operational concerns of the F-16. The Saab Jas Gripen (E) would be the ideal 4th Gen jet fighter for Ukraine. It’s cheaper than F-16, cheaper to operate, easier to maintain, easier to fly, has an excellent electronics suite, can land and take off from a motorway (which the F-16 can’t), has dedicated crews that can re-arm, refuel and repair quickly at the roadside in comparison to the F-16. What the F-16 has over the Gripen is availability! There are simply more “spare” F-16s in comparison to the Gripen (thousands vs hundreds). In time Ukraine will do well to eventually swap over to the Gripen but the F-16 is what they need right now.

The issue is that Sweden doesn't have Gripens the C models to be donated. The E models are brand new and expensive jets that won't just be donated. It may be when the Czech republic returns the C models when they get F35, that they will be donated, but it is doubtful.

But they aren’t out there in the numbers that make it possible for a nation to give them up, there’s really only 2 real options, older vipers or hornets which are the two most produced gen 4 fighters and also in many cases are being phased out by the F-35 making it possible to donate.

I always lived the F-16 as a kid, moreso than the "cooler" F-14s and F-15s. There was something about it that appealed to me. The compact, sleek, elegant design that gave it a sort of "underdog" vibe. Cut away the BS and just optimize the basics and you get something that can dance, sting, haul, and is cheap enough to bring friends along for backup. Anyway, I guess my point is that over the years I feel like I appreciate it even more, now. Or maybe I'm just a little proud of it, watching it grow and change and really shine. When back in the day people kinda saw it as just a "budget" option, the little Viper showed the world that it could do it all, do it better, and do it cheaper. Make us proud, little Viper, go save some Ukrainians!

With the F16 now being flown it means the AGM-88 HARM can now be used to it's full capability in all 3 modes. I wouldn't want to be maning an air defence system within a 100K of that front line knowing that there about SEAD operation is already going on with it's hands tied being cobbled to a Russian jet but when it's got full sensor and radar integration it's a different beast all together.

I'm not so sure it will make a huge difference. It would help the HARM missile be more effective and maybe force the KA-52s away from the front lines but the ground forces will still have to deal with trenches/emplacements/mines/artillery. The Russians will just adapt to it like they did with the TB2 drones and himars.

Ukrainian F16s will not be game changer but will be big target of game. Better have them than have not for Ukraine. There will be 2 kind of adversery for Ukrainian F-16s. 1) On the Air: Su-35s Russian Su-35s can engage with PESA Irbis radar to RCS 1m2 (with ordanance bigger than 1m2) F-16s from 150km/80NM away. Instead F-16s Block70 AESA Sabr Viper can engage RCS 3m2 Su-35 from 120km/65NM. Su-35 has advantege of air to air confict. 2) On the Ground: SAM and Manpads S-400 Missile Engagement Radar can target RCS 1m2 F-16s from 175km/95NM away if F-16 flys higher than 10000feet. So, F-16s will be fly at lower than 10000 altitude. Then, risk is Igla Manpads can fire 15000feet. But F-16s will low and fast. This could be a good chance. We will see.

@ABCantonese
@ABCantonese 9 ай бұрын
I'm looking at this from a different POV, which is how does it taste against the MiG-29.... it's a mixed bag IMO. First, I seriously doubt the F-16 is any more maneuverable than the fighters the Ukrainians had, full stop. Second, it's cheap to operate... Compared to other available Western fighters. It's still more expensive to operate than Fulcrums and Flankers. It also needs a fancy airfield to work from, unlike the Migs. What the Vipers offer, and oh so pivotal, are the weapon capabilities and new roles it can perform. They are indeed worth it. If these guys manage to become SEAD experts, you can now strike all you want. Fly high and you might even not have to think about the manpads. The rest of the AF now free to do their thing. Just hope by God that they don't get destroyed on the ground. The F-16 ticks all the boxes when you rate it against other Western fighters, but against what Ukraine started the war with, there are fundamentals that it's missing.

the name of the f17 is fighting falcon, not viper. an f16 is called a viper when it has the block 70/72 upgrade package. these are the most modern variants of the jet. very few countries have signed contracts to either upgrade their old f16s to this level or procure new f16s, built to that standard. the only countries who have pledged jets to ukraine are denmark and netherlands, whose f16s are of the block 30 standard. no country would ever send a brand new jet to ukraine.

Correct, the official name of the F-16 is the Fighting Falcon, however since its early days it has been referred to by pilots and maintainers as the viper. In fact, the Air Force F-16 demo team is referred to as the Viper Demo Team, with the jet painted up - as Viper. They fly an older (non block 70 jet) here is their site: www.shaw.af.mil/Viper-Demo-Team/ To your point, the Block 70 F-16 has been designated Viper as well, so it is sort seems like the USAF finally acknowledged what everyone who works and flies the airplane has been calling it all along. This is also similar to the A-10, who's officially named Thunderbolt II, but most pilots and maintainers call it the Warthog or just Hog. Thanks for commenting!

I'm pretty sure the countries would rather sell them, then dispose them. They are given to Ukraine as a donation, and while they may not be the newest block revisions they are still capable weapon platforms. The Danish F16s are Block 15 with MLU updates. The can carry several type LGB/GBU's and AIM 120B/C AMRAAM. Their mission isn't air superiority but strike missions. Also Block 50 Vipers and above are more capable than even the newest SU-27 Flanker B. The original SU 27 Flanker B was already very much analog in systems delivery and especially lacking in ground strike.

@@interpl6089 The newer Block 50 Viper and newer can easily match Su27 Flanker B in BVR, if that wasn't the case why would Ukraine even ask for F16 when they already have Su 27 Flanker B from the beginning of the war. The strike missions are on Ukraines own territory to gain lost area an secure area/border control. Not to attack mainland Russia. You completely ignore the fact that F16 has an extensive combat record and a proven weapons platform and it has seen engagements since Gulf War 1991 and forwards in for Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. If Russia really were that great the conflict in Ukraine wouldn't have lasted 1½ years now. The SU-35 yes is the evolution of the SU-27 and much more capable, and can in many regards match or best the F16 Block 50/52 models, however the workhorse for russia is still SU-25 and Ka-52 in the ground attack roles. The SU 35s are not in the frontline at the moment, but are kept on area/border patrol. Yes the SU27 and MIG29 were both a wake up call to western airforces however it didn't take long to find strength and weaknesses, so the deal for the pilot is to engage the fight that suits his/her plane best. The F16 is a rate fighter and keeping it at corner speed of around 350~360 knots it beats almost anything in a two circle fight. The Su27 prefers the single circle fight with high AOA offset. Saying the Viper won't survive a SAM environment is just ignorant. Just look up the HUD footage from the Gulf War where a Viper pilot doged six SAMs.

the logistical challenge for ukraine to properly move f16 and use it is too great..for 1 flight hour the f16 requires roughly another 16-17 to maintain it and needs 5 to 7 ground crew to clean, fix, refuel and rearm it after every mission which even if they have all that the amount of training they will be getting from nato wont be nearly enough for the complexity of the aircraft compared to the old mig 29 (which is a great platform dont get me wrong) the pilots of the f16 wont be able to do SEAD, CAS or any task thats essential for air superiority which is not happening if you have minimal training against a much greater air force with much more complex surface to air missiles..the f16 wont do them any good and will just economically fuck them even more
