Our house and home renovation plans, one year later! After a long diy journey, I've learned to adjust my plans for our first home. Here is how the house looks like now as well as changes in plans that I had when we first moved in. Renovations can be a hard reality check, especially on a budget, so this is what I think I can do on my own!

I love that you're keeping the yellow bathroom tile! I was so happy my house still had the original '50s pink tile with black tile border. I'll never get rid of it. Especially since it's in such good shape like your yellow tile. Save the pink (and yellow) bathrooms! 💛

For your entry - I would get a bunch of those wall mounted closed storage shoe cabinets and mount along the wall below the banister. Plenty of storage for shoes, scarves & gloves, dog leashes, etc. Make a top out of wood and decorate with a tray for keys and lots of plants. Solves the storage problem and creates a space with personality instead of looking straight thru the banisters.

As a clumsy person, the best decision I made was removing tile from the kitchen. So many dishes have been saved from accidental destruction

100% love your approach to wanting to keep some of the house's original character. Canada's housing market is completely bonkers. I am so grateful that my husband and I were able to buy a detached house in 2020. The 2022 game is completely off the rails and there's no way we could have afforded it if we waited! Like you, we've done a fair amount of work but kept the 80's charm with all the original oak chair rails, cabinets and bone-coloured toilets, bathtub, etc. Keeping these original features has enhanced the home. I can only imagine how many others would've painted the oak white and replaced all the toilets, sinks, etc with pure white.

I loved seeing how it’s changed from before you moved in to now, it looks completely different! For the dining area, I would actually flip where it is now and have a bench against that wall and make the right side the “walkway.” It might help balance the space more as the table will be more grounded and the walkway will have the open air side

Go for it! Don't get lost in the pea soup sauce. Tackle the wall hangings first. It's a quick project with the most impact. Throw some wall paper up in your office and bathroom to help you feel inspired everyday! Don't be overhelmed, be daring!

Regarding the kitchen floor: Tile can be very slippery when wet. I had a kitchen with tile flooring and it was straight-up a hazard. I wouldn't do it again. That, and the grout got SO DIRTY it was unbelievable. In a previous condo we had vinyl flooring and I really liked it. Super easy to clean and didn't have to stress about water or messes.

I would turn the railing in your dining area into a wall so you do a bench seat against it plus gives the dining some privacy (people’s legs lol) And it can be a more casual dining room with some storage.

I think most people opt for vinyl for water resistant areas and tile in a shower or bathroom where water tends to collect on a daily basis. Vinyl can be warmer on the feet as well as softer in terms of sound. So I’d be team Vinyl in the kitchen and running into the hallway.

Have you thought about storage/seating on the dining room wall where you already store things? Take off the rail and make it storage that has seating on the other side - there is your dual purpose!!

You can actually tile over tiles (probably including slate) as long as the ones you are covering are fixed down and not loose. Check with a Contractor or Tile company. I have done it quite successfully. The floor was concrete so nice and solid and the tiles were well glued down. I removed the skirting boards and tiled and replace the skirting. Haven't had a problem and it's been a couple of years or more (it was well pre Covid!).

Hi Letitia! I have a 1970s split foyer house with a similar entryway. The area in your mock-up where you have an entryway table and mirror I think is your best option. My entryway is a little bit different, but that spot is most similar to the space and set up I have. Instead of a console table, I have a hemnes shoe cabinet from Ikea (with a mirror hung above it). It's very narrow so it doesnt take up much space, it can store a bunch of shoes, and the top of the cabinet has usable space as well-I have bowls for our keys, a small tray for mail. Of course it TOTALLY gets clogged up and the "throw things onto the floor of the living room above" thing you showed absolutely happens still, but maybe an option to keep in mind re: utilizing that space!
@letitiakiu
@letitiakiu 2 жыл бұрын
Ah I know that shoe cabinet! I know with us we'll definitely not be good about putting shoes away, but you're right! What a great dual purpose piece. Really nice to hear someone else's perspective on how they live with split entry

My heart broke a little too when we were looking for our first home and so many homes were renovated to be bland imo and with no personality. We fell in love with an old house that had original pine cupboards and so much character but unfortunately it also had a historic oil spill 😢. Design styles and trends come and go but trying to restore painted tile, wood, and furniture is so difficult. I love your yellow tile and your ideas to make it more stylish

Hmmmm.... What you need for your table thing around your couch is a Bjorkasen table from IKEA. It's great I even use it in my sewing room for an extra surface when I have too many things going on at the same time. And it's height is adjustable. Never mind building something this is an easy peasy solution to a landing zone for your drinks, snacks etc while watching TV. Also for your laptop or sketch pad, notebooks. If you want a fancier one there's the Vittsjo I'm trying to hack the Bjorkasen table top to swivel on the base so I can use it in bed when I'm spending time headquartered on the bed. Sometimes it's the perfect place to spread your stuff all over and there's no room for a beverage or laptop.

I think your issue with not knowing how to sit and lounge on your couch is just due to having a very deep couch. You can't really sit against the back cushions and have your feet on the floor/ reach and use your coffee table. Your couch was made for curling up on and snuggling so just embrace it. It sounds like a good idea to add a shelf on top to use instead of the coffee table.

@erinmoore9681

There are two types of installation on a microhood, ducted and recirculating. To change the recirc. to ducted, you may be able to just cut a whole in the ceiling and run the duct to the exterior. Some roof flashing will be needed and a vent cap to properly weatherproof the penetration through the roofing material. If you prefer a ducted microhood, you may have to purchase one specifically intended for that type of installation. Hope this helps 🧡

Whatever you do dont put tile in your kitchen. You will regret it. I don't know how many jars of salsa , spaghetti sauce, pickles, etc have fallen out of my fridge and exploded all over the kitchen. Can't change it.... Condo. I purchase the smallest jar of salsa cause it will inevitably get smashed on the floor. It doesn't matter if it's on the bottom shelf. It even falls out in slow motion and still explodes. I hate that floor.

I'd probably be more concerned with how and why things are falling out of the fridge, is it completely level? You might also want to look for some sort of mat for your kitchen floor which may help to absorb the impact. I have tiles now and have had them in many of my previous homes and haven't had a problem. I may have dropped the occasional glass but it will smash on both tile and timber surfaces. I don't see it as a problem with having tiles and hard floors.
