The 2024 Tesla Model 3 is finally here! That's right; the mid-size sedan that brought electric vehicles (EVs) to the masses has undergone its first major update, otherwise known as Highland. So, what exactly has changed with best-selling EV? And have these upgrades made a big difference?
Well, in this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Tom White answers those questions - and more. Specifically, he deep-dives the Model 3's redesigned front and rear fascias, as well as overhauled interior, including the controversial removal of the indicator stalk.
But there's more to the BYD Seal and Polestar 2 rival than just that, as it also gets significant underbody changes, including revised suspension. As before, three variants are available, with the entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive and mid-range Long Range available from launch, while the Performance flagship is set to return at a later date.

Cannot express how good those ventilated seats are on a hot day. I’ve switched preference from a Y to a 3 purely on this. The biggest gap in BYD to Tesla is the software. Tesla is a generation ahead of everyone in the software. Driving a BYD after a Tesla feels like going back to a Nokia after using an iPhone. The interior is nicer but the software lets it down imo.

Can't you charge your ev at any of the non tesla chargers all over the place? They're everywhere on Google maps
@dyemanoz
@dyemanoz 6 ай бұрын
@@stevenleonards4843 Yes, but many on the map aren't fast chargers (Tesla or non-tesla), and in my experience if they're non-Tesla, they're less likely to be working. Also, many non-Tesla fast charger sites have only one or two chargers, so more likely to be occupied or not working. On the flip side, looks like Tesla is opening it's charger network to non-Tesla vehicles, which is great news for owners of non-Tesla EVs and EV adoption generally.

No need to go back to a boiling hot car - you can set it in "dog mode", or just use the app to tell the car to cool down the interior when you are ready to return to it.

Regarding no apple carplay: Personally I wouldn't want it obliterating the standard display, however iphone integration is excellent - you can play music from your phone, initiate phone calls using voice commands (the car will access your phone contact list), and dictate text messages using the car's voice recognition.

Have a Seal Premium on order but though I’d better test drive a Tesla 3 which did today, a red one the same as in this video. It’s like stepping into the future to say the least. Very taken with the performance, hard to see needing any more power than this. The OPD is great, the gear selector is ok, parking brake straightforward. Like the way the screen comes on when you use the indicators. The frunk is very big, the trunk decent. The screen in the back seat looks great as does the back seat area. Liked the pull down armrest but at 6’ question the legroom and space in the Tesla, it’s almost like it need a long wheelbase version. The back seat of the seal is superior. Makes you wonder if someone will come up with an accessory rear screen for the seal. Lifting the bonnet with the gas struts, the quality in this area feels high. The car is very sporty to drive, any gap or any need to beat another car off the mark is in no doubt. Yes the steering is direct. I wish there was a better range of colours, dusting the test drive the LKA assist made no noise, the sound system has a nice tone. As someone completely new to Tesla a 2 or 3 day rental might be the go. It’s dearer than the Seal but a very sharp drive. If the upcoming model 2 is like this, wowee. Glad I took the test drive.

Tesla just sent an OTA update allowing for native Apple Music and Apple Podcast use through the touchscreen on the car. Insofar as the instrument cluster…having driven cars with one my whole life (driving for about 25 years now), this is only a problem if you don’t own a Tesla. In other words, it’s fine. I suppose it is entirely subjective. However, having made the transition to Tesla cars about a year ago, my experience has been that I now prefer the Tesla method, without a bustling busy center of information right in front of the driver. Going back to other cars that do have an instrument cluster is too much, unnecessary, and they always seem to lack a read-time 360 view of surrounding cars, the most recent speed limit sign, and a blind spot camera when indicating. The Tesla approach is simply better. Usually the thought of change is what is difficult, not the change itself. The result of the change, at least for me, is that it is much better.

Lol @ sport steering being so heavy it's useless....obviously you are used to very light setting powered steering. Always driven my M3P on sport steering and it's often not heavy enough - with the very high ratio rack and high acceleration, without some serious steering weight you actually can't keep the car on line when on high throttle as just the weight of your arms under acceleration will tend to make you pull the steering a bit (resulting in a lot of movement on a tesla rack), without the steering weight cranked up. This is particularly the case when cornering under hard throttle as the rack becomes even more sensitive when off centre.

I live in Scandinavia, here we have many months with snow and ice and salt My tesla 3 model year 2019 I have learned the hard way is not made for this climate hope this new model 3 has solved these problems to take some things the handles freeze so I can't get into the car regardless of whether I use the app to heat the car 2 hours before I go the few times this helps then another phenomenon occurs when i open the door and the window won't go down due to ice and i get in the car and close the door then the window explodes because the window hasn't gone down when there is a lot of snow on the car and I open the rear hatch, most of the snow falls straight into the trunk when it rains the same thing happens the hatch is not water tight and it is not fun to have the hatch filled with water these are just some of the problems i have with my tesla 3 here's a video that pretty well shows what I'm talking about kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbmhY9hmxJbRmIE.htmlsi=wOkFTrbGs-t-RSLC the next video shows that the Tesla model 3 and Y have no rust protection whatsoever from the factory this is really bad kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7ianbaQ3r-WgZs.htmlsi=mZfm1zE3zqcxZp4D Tesla is lousy when it comes to the body no rust protection they mix materials that generate galvanic currents that eat up the metal in the car if you own your Tesla for 1-2 years it works but I would never buy a used Tesla the rust protection is so bad that a 3-year-old car used in Scandinavia already has such rust damage that it fails the car inspection here, Tesla must learn from the established car brands how to make a car body that does not rust apart after a few years this part should be much easier than FSD etc. for this, all icu car manufacturers have the knowledge, it's just for Tesa to copy their method unless Tesla improves the quality of their cars and by that I mean the body, paint, mechanical, then many Tesla owners will be quite disappointed when they sell their 3 year old Tesla which is full of rust and paint damage kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZpgjKmZu7ipqWw.htmlsi=a2ktLXohIQuqtQ2y unless you live in Miami or Dubai or some other place that doesn't have snow or rain in these cities no rust or rain protection is needed

Also missing turn signal stalks is a proof Tesla cars are not tested by end users ever and no user feedback is taken seriously, last but not least this car was supposed to be 30k USD, here in Bulgaria it starts at roughly 50k USD, 2 supercharges in the whole country and nearest service center & official Tesla is in Turkey or Romania so well good for Tesla for you well thanks for your money!

I’ve watched endless reviews that suggest the Highland is a a truly significant “upgrade;’ from the previous model. This review does much the same. My car is a late August 2023 build Shanghai Model 3 long range. I’ve added roof liners that work a treat to protect from the hot sun. The last Model 3 is lovely, and has stalks, and no it’s not “unpolished”, it’s comfortable, drives smoothly and so well, the seats are super comfortable and software upgrades keep coming to improve every aspect of the car and its handling. The new Model 3 is lovely, but I’m sick of reviewers using their own personal likes and dislikes to qualify how good cars are. What we like is an individual choice. The tyres on my car are excellent, the handling is brilliant, the suspension is calm, albeit firm, but aids handling beautifully. NO, the new car hasn’t “improved out of sight”, it’s an incremental improvement, but guess what, software updates gave my car a blind spot camera, 3d reversing and guess what, I have sonic sensors in my front and rear bumpers, yes the new car has so many small but wonderful incremental improvements, each software update provides similar updates for mine. You reviewer guys simply don’t get the fact Tesla’s are all wonderful cars, and cars of any brand are an absolutely personal choice.

Nobody is saying your car is bad. They're just saying that the new one is better. I don't see the controversy there. For some users the older model will be better, because of the stalks for example. But BEV is a much less mature technology than ICE so its reasonable to expect fairly sizeable improvements with each iteration for the next decade or so
@gregturner_awod
@gregturner_awod 6 ай бұрын
Appreciate your reply, the new one is different and has some added extras. I test drove one in Canberra. Some things are incrementally better, others very much the same, and I didn’t say your review said my car was “bad”. What’s good is a matter of personal opinion. If you drive in Canberra as I do with moderate frequency I have to say I do like the stalks. ICE cars update regularly. EV’s do as well. EV’s are a little more like iPhones in terms of excellent technology. The new iPhone is “better” than the last one, but incrementally and not in terms of a colossal change, the new external design on the Model 3 is incrementally slightly less wind resistant. The last design remains very slippery as well. As for BEV being less mature technology than ICE, sorry, I disagree. BEV technology is cutting edge, particularly Tesla which began building EV’s and didn’t try to convert ICE designs to BEV. ICE is technology of the past, not dead, but with a certainly declining future.

No evidence of high depreciation upto now, especially on the base model, rebates and FBT exemption on novated leases will affect depreciation as they incentivise the purchase of new compared to second hand. This makes second hand a bit cheaper which is exactly what the govn is trying to do, but the original owners haven't lost that difference. If EVS do depreciate heavily they will take ICE vehicles down with them, at the end of the day they are a substitute for each other.

The Polestar 2 is not similarly priced, it’s significantly more expensive for 2024. Starts at least $5k more than M3 RWD. Other than that the reviewer thinks the Tesla is a “lovely” car 😂

Australia uses CCS2 so NAC not relevant, interested by the rust comment though, do you have a good source for that involving multiple BYD export cars.

A good video. Yes the Tesla bumper-to-bumper 4 years/80,000km warranty is well below Australian average and also not in line with Australian Consumer Law (ACL). It needs to go to at least 5 years/100,00km , not 4 year/80,000km. The 8 year / 160,000km battery/motor warranty is OK for most people. With revolutionary progress in BEV space I expect this Model 3 in 8 years will be worthless anyhow. The new BEV on sale in 2032 will make the 2024 Model 3 look like a toy. Consumers need to be aware of this. Dont bet on any resale value when buying a new car in 2024. Not BEV, not ICE.
@dyemanoz
@dyemanoz 6 ай бұрын
So no-one should by a car today because there will be a better one available in 2032?? Also, this is a Tesla - the Model 3 was first introduced in 2017. A 2017 car will have received software updates/enhancements released since then, and have essentially the same functionality as a 2023 model car.
@yuribudilov5638
@yuribudilov5638 6 ай бұрын
@@dyemanoz Not until 2032. Model 3 did not sell in big volumes until closer to 2019. Most of Model 3 are still under bumper-to-bumper new warranty, we dont know what will happen to them in next 4 years. They may last well, or they may not. Software has been updated yes but the battery/motors are essentially the same, which is a long time for brand new technology. I expect in another ~4 years entirely new revolutionary battery technology (perhaps solid state batteries finally?) making the 2028 BEV vastly better than 2024 BEV - in all respects. And it probably will be cheaper to buy too in 2028. I think it is worth waiting ~4-5 years if your current car is going to last that long.
@dyemanoz
@dyemanoz 6 ай бұрын
@@yuribudilov5638 But as you mention, battery/drivetrain warranty is up to 8 years, not 4. And software updates will continue. And if an EV is going to be worthless in 8 years, an ICE car will be worthless way before then! - an electric motor will not wear out like an internal combustion engine, and required no oil changes or other servicing. And if you keep your old ICE car for years, think how much you will have spent on servicing and fuel compared to an EV, let alone the amount of CO2 and nox emitted for us all to breathe.

It will be so much worse for ICE cars. You'd be nuts to buy a new ICE car in 2024 let alone 2032!
@yuribudilov5638
@yuribudilov5638 6 ай бұрын
@@budawang77 agreed. We are in transitional period now for cars. The BEV is still not fully understood, there are plenty of new things to discover and fix beyond new car warranty. ICE is a dead end but they still sell about 1 million each year in Australia. I think good hybrid car (like Toyota/Lexus hybrid) is a good compromise for next 8-12 years. Tesla Model 3 Highland is a good BEV but it has plenty of things the tradtional car owners will not like, the mediocre warranty is just one of those things.

There seem to be an awful lot of excuses being made for various minor and not-so-minor quibbles with this car. Is there some (good) reason why Tesla gets the benefit of the doubt every time? Disclosure: I’m in the market for an EV and am going to take my time looking carefully at a range of options. I absolutely can’t stand Elon Musk and do not trust him or his products one single inch. So far, my research indicates that BYD is an outstanding brand offering great value for money at different price points. But there is definitely some buried anti-China animosity in *some* reviews, unfortunately.

Still notable for what it doesn't have. Can a drivers binnacle or head up display be too hard for Tesla? ..and I wouldn't purchase a car in OZ with a glass roof without a blind. Ugly rims....and interior is a sea of grey grey and more grey.
@dyemanoz
@dyemanoz 6 ай бұрын
Plenty of third party options for driver instruments, HUD etc, and you can buy roof blinds from Tesla or others. White interior is an option if you don''t like grey. If you haven't driven a Tesla - it is not too hard to simply glance to the left to see the actual speed. If you don't like the standard aero hubcaps, either leave them off (there are alloy wheels underneath) or upgrade to the 19 inch sliver alloys which look pretty nice!
