Testing & reviewing my new Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork with a coil spring. The small bump sensitivity is real, the weight penalty is barely noticed, and the support through the travel is impressive. Tell me your thoughts and what to try next in the comments below!

Yes the Z1 coil looks awesome. I’m currently riding the Fox Vanilla coil 32 R 140mm and it is the best fork I have ever ridden. Nothing compares to the feel of a coil. My next purchase may be the Z1

I got my first full sus bike in the fall, an Ibis Ripmo AF with the Z1 coil. I am going for a blue, black and silver theme on my bike, so I did the same with the grip damper knob except I did not have another bike to steal it from so ordered one from LBS and it is the same knob as the Fox 34, 36 and 38 Rythm.

Top video and review, but I got to call you out on Fox/Marzocchi thing they are 2 completely different forks even though owned by same parent company, internals are different I've striped many you take a weight hit on Z1 over Fox 36 performance but the Z1 coil or air out performs the F36p by a long shot, genuinely one of the most underrated forks on the market
@GlobalTrailGuide
@GlobalTrailGuide 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insight! My understanding was that the frame/body of the fork was the same as the 36 rhythm, not necessarily the internals (I’m not familiar with those). Appreciate your expertise and agree entirely that the fork is hugely underrated and also an excellent value
@mtbbiker6401
@mtbbiker6401 2 жыл бұрын
@@GlobalTrailGuide You are correct. Internals of the Z1 Air and Fox Rhythm are the same, but not the same as the Performance/Factory, at least the spring side. Although both are 36mm stanchions, the inner diameter of the stanchion is slightly smaller in the Z1/Rhythm vs. Factory/Performance. This means different air spring assembly and volume spacers are required for the Z1/Rhythm vs. Factory/Performance. You are correct that the damper can be upgraded from Grip to Grip 2.

What does the preload adjustment do on the coil shock?
@GlobalTrailGuide
@GlobalTrailGuide Жыл бұрын
I snagged a helpful quote from Blister Review - explains it better than I could: “Essentially, preload means that the spring is pushing outward on the shock before the shock has even started compressing. To make the shock start to compress, you have to overcome that preload force. The more preload force there is, the more force you have to exert on the shock to get it to move. So basically, more preload means less sag. When setting preload on a coil shock, you always want to keep a minimal level of preload on the coil to keep the coil from rattling around when the shock is uncompressed. If you’re down less than one turn on the collar from where the spring rattles and you still don’t have enough sag, you probably need a softer spring rate. On the other hand, if you find that you have to put three or more full turns of preload on the coil to get the proper sag, you probably need a stiffer spring.” Hope that helps!

Yo, I got the same bike and thinking of mullet. Just a quick question, can I mullet it with stock Fox 38!? I looked for A2C on it and your video and it is the same as on Z1 that you put on. Thanks!
@GlobalTrailGuide
@GlobalTrailGuide 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there - a Fox 38 29” is 160mm/573.7mm, 170mm/583.7mm, and 180mm/593.7mm (suspension travel / A2C). The stock 38 27.5” 180mm is 575.7mm. My 170mm Z1 A2C is 580mm, already 4.3mm longer than the 27.5” 38 - before accounting for wheel size change. Meaning that a 29” 170mm+ 38 will only continue to extend beyond Commencals intentions for geometry. It’s a personal decision based on how you want your bike to ride. For me personally, I wouldn’t go longer than a 160mm Fox 38. Similar to how I ran a 160mm Zeb mullet on my Clash for awhile. Hope that helps!

@@GlobalTrailGuide Hey, thanks for answer. These stock 38 that is already on it can or can't be used for doing this!? It says that can be 27.5 or 29 on fork. I don't know, just asking!? Maybe just to lower the travel to 170 with air shaft on current 38, will that work? Thanks
@GlobalTrailGuide
@GlobalTrailGuide 2 жыл бұрын
@@ivanleeZG to my knowledge, the stock 38 is only designed for 27.5/27.5+ and cannot be used for a 29” wheel. Especially with a 2.5” Assegai (or similar), I can say with confidence that the 29” wheel wouldn’t fit (not enough clearance)

Why'd you go from a Fox 38mm chassis to a 36mm?
@GlobalTrailGuide
@GlobalTrailGuide Жыл бұрын
Never hurts to try new things! The difference in stiffness is quite marginal (though it is noticeable). Primary reason is that I wanted to try a coil fork and I could comfortably go to 170mm without affecting geo of my bike too dramatically. 170 38 29er axle to crown is too long for the Clash.

@@GlobalTrailGuide Killer vid man! I've got a z1 coil on my patrol and am debating a 38...would you recommend or stick w the coil? Ride a lot of hard downhill at high speeds, so was wondering how much the stiffness of the 38 would benefit. thanks!
@GlobalTrailGuide
@GlobalTrailGuide Жыл бұрын
@@colinbrann6956 Thanks Colin! Shoot, if I were you I'd pick up a V1 Zeb Ultimate. They are super cheap right now - sales galore at all retailers. But if you really want the Fox, I understand! The additional stiffness is noticeable, especially around corners. And it's likely you'll experience the bike holding it's line a tad better.

Possibly, yeah. I currently run a Dissector 27.5x2.6” in the rear. Maybe a 2.8 would fit, but I’ve never tested it.
