You can loosen the foot nuts and use a 10mm & 15mm socket with a hammer to unseat the air spring & damper.

There's a risk you will damage the alu nut if you hit on it with a socket. A damaged nut might make the shaft rotate with the nut. I remove the nut and use something with a hole that fits over the rebound screw.

That was fantastic, Christina. You explained this better than any other presenter on any cycling channel. I am so glad that Pinkbike had the wisdom to hire you. I think Pinkbike should have a weekly show called something like "Christina's Tech Tutorials". You make learning fun and easy. You are articulate, intelligent, thorough, talented, and entertaining. The perfect teacher. I hope to see many more videos like this, in the future.

Well done. I've watched countless fork service videos. This one was straight to the point and useful. As a recovering bike mechanic, I even learned a new trick (beaker for suspension fluid). One request: I'd REALLY like to see the same level of no-frills description for LSC tuning. I'd like to see someone explain and demo the interplay between fork air pressure, air volume, and LSC for different riding conditions. I'm one of those "run almost zero LSC and hope for the best" luddites, and I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. Not sure if that is appropriate for a winter overhaul series, but definitely something I'd love to see.

Things like this are best learned on something shagged. Look around on those buy/swap groups or your local newspaper. Pick up a set of clapped out forks to learn on. Sure it's hard to cock up but it's still better to practice on some knackered old things than to risk a £1000 set of forks. Besides, if you get those old forks working nicely someone might want them for a bit of cash.

My old reliable Marzocchi Junior-T only needs every 10 years an oil change and the sealings should be cleaned regularly. After cleaning i apply a µ of silicon-spray, compress the fork 2 or 3 times and remove the surplus silicon. This let the coating of the standpipes remain like new with literally zero breakaway torque. 6:28 I use household wet wipes (melon scent). No lint and the right ammount of cleaning agent. They're also pretty useful to get rid of this nasty chain goo. Don't use them on brake disks/pads because of the soapy ingredients.
