Upgrading the classic Top Cat 2WD vintage racing buggy with a modern slipper clutch to improve handling.
In this video, you get to see in detail all the steps required to retrofit a Muzzoom Models KF2 slipper clutch to a rere Top Cat Classic and my thoughts on this upgrade vs the Schumacher pro transition option U7600.

Yeah, nice video Gavin! Just bought the pro-transmission with the kit... Bought also a second body before the discontinuation... so far so good. Hope will be able to find some tyres again. Your initial video on topcat build was great, by the way!

Yep I think it was good value and it fixed all the possible issues when running real power.

Thanks for this kind of video, my kind of thing, vintage racing, do love Tamyia kit, Midnight Pumpkin my first, Avante 2001 the pinnacle in the segment. Ever thought about restoring an Associated RC10T or any kind of early 90's stadium truck racer from the early, Losi,Traxxas Schumacher or the like? In my opinion more fun than the buggies, but that's probably due to being more forgiving to drive and less sensitive to set-up.......Yes I was , and am still am a crap driver/racer... love the hobby though.. Keep up the good work and wish you all the best with your RCKicks venture.

I have the pro transmission. It has a before diff but also bigger teeth on the belt as per the xls upgrade

Amainhobbies has all the part numbers for the pro trans for the top cat and xls in the adds for the pro transmission on each of the kits. And it looks like most of the individual parts are available if you want to put your own pro transmission kits together . Course much like kyosho and yokamo schumacher pulls a premium for prices I see

I think the pro transmission runs a course tooth Belt and matching pulleys perhaps the muzzoom mms drum diff would fit the std belt???

How does the top pulley transfer the drive from the layshaft? Is it pin drive or a flat on the layshaft?

Hi Gavin, great vid. Just wanted to know if you have heard of known issues with these where the chassis bends just before where the rear bulkhead sits. I wonder if there was a way to prevent this? And I wonder if a carbon fiber chassis would be a good solution. Also do you think the cougar rear carbon fiber shock tower would fit in the top cat?

Carbon chassis are being made for this currently. Still on second prototype but it shouldn’t be long. Info will be posted I. Just For RCKicks Facebook group

It narrows the front end 5mm each side and gives better steering and handling. Schumacher offer a kit with everything needed for the conversion.

Obviously the pro trans is better. You are still stuck with a motor limit because of the original trans design. Belt pitch is so small that any real power will destroy it.

Not sold on the idea of using printed pulleys, surely muzoom or whoever they are could have gotten someone like rw to make real pulleys.

Yep it's an expensive option, especially when you look at what you could have got with the pro trans option. Let's hope if Schumacher rere a Cougar, we will see the same pro trans kit become available again.
