Upgrading the ImmersionRC Ghost firmware in the module and receivers

As I needed to do a firmware update on the Ghost, I figured I'd film what I did as a quick, albeit slightly meandering, guide if it helps others. As you may pick up on, I was figuring things out as I went.
You can get the Ghost updater software (Windows only) from www.immersionrc.com/fpv-produ... under the "Firmware/Downloads" tab. You'll want to grab the drivers while you are there as well. The firmware isn't listed under the site, as it's released you'll see it appear in the updated. I'll be testing mine out some more as soon as I can - I'll even install it on a model soon !

hang on you've had your ghost ffs i am still waiting for mine since august. :) you didn't order 2 by any chance did you. closest look at the ghost system so far . thanks for that.

The very nice person that gave me this one did indeed order 2 (mainly to get a whole bunch more receivers) I guess distributors only got a certain amount, and some pre-ordered weren't fulfilled, whereas other people seemed to get hold of their systems quite easily

I was going to buy Ghost, then thought about TBS Tracer. Then thought sod it. I’ll stick with my R9M Lite Pro. It works so why change.

Does ghost module have a fan and can we replace the connector on the moduoe if it somehow worns out?

I've been interested in ghost since I already have the diversity module, glad to know update was as easy as the tbs. Compared to the tracer, does the tracer use two separate immortal t minis? And the ghost uses just a single immortal t style?

Yeah - the tracer rx that was being shown off in the videos a week or so ago was using 2 mini Ts. IRC showed the Ghost Atto Duo which actually has 2 independent rx's on the board for "proper diversity". There words not mine. The increased competition between TBS and IRC is certainly getting them working harder on things :)

@@CurryKitten thanks for the reply! Only thing I can really nitpick about ghost me having 3 dang antennas on one transmitter. Sounds like a give and take though. Tracer has one on the tx and two on quad, ghost has two on tx and one on quad?

Does the transmitter need to speak "ghost" or can the module use other protocols to talk to me radio?

It mentions in the manual that you have to speak Ghost between the radio and external module. So I don't think there's the normal fall-back method of talking PPM via a non-OpenTX radio.

R9 has been a total flop for me & frsky smaller receivers have had very disappointing range. Enter Ghost but the doco I have seen is vague. "Most standard protocols are supported, including PWM...". Do the ghost receivers do PWM for planes without flight controllers? Is so how many channels? Thanks Mr CC.

I think R9 is certainly the least popular of the 868/915Mhz solutions. FrSky most certainly don't seem to be able to engage with their customers anymore allowing others to swoop in and do better. I've never tried any real range test out of the smaller rx's like the XM+. Back in the day I experiemented with the old D8R-II+ and it was mainly about how antennas were placed. Out of the box it was good for around 1.5km (before losing telemetry but not control) extend the antennas and place them better 3.5km. Then the L9R got to around 6km with no messing. Range of the rx's with these new 2.4 systems seems to be less of a concern now. But to answer your question on PWM, the answer is 4 channels. If you need more than that (without an FC) I guess you are looking at some sort of SBUS to PWM converter to sit in the middle.

It's weird that they don't have a macOS version, they have one for RapidFire and it looks like the exact same base app. Also, definitely not as straightforward as TBS stuff.

You make a good point - where's my MacOS version!! To be fair, cross-platform apps like this are more complicated whenever you are talking via comms ports. I expect they'll push out the Mac & Linux versions eventually

Not very happy with my ghost so far. The communication of IMRC is pretty bad. Without you I wouldn't have known anything about a new firmware at all.

Feels like it needs a good old fashioned mailing sign up. Where it drops you an email telling you when some new firmware has dropped along with the release notes of what's been fixed.

@@CurryKitten Well... then they are hiding. There is no news section on their site so I think they'd post their news under the "blogs" section. There the newest entry is January 2019. Oh... yeah. Just found the release notes. :-) They are good in hiding them.
