I can't seem to raise my thighs past horizontal. When I was a few decades younger, I could raise them a lot higher. Is this simply lack of hip flexor strength?

You are special my friend.. You have no idea how much good you have done for me.. I would like to say that breathing properly is also a key for healthy hips.. When I was in chronic pain I realised that i had short breathing... Breath deep and be cool

Shouldn't there also be a possible scenario where the hip flexors have adequate strength but are tight because of glute and hamstring weakness?

just made the connection recently between my low back pain and weak glutes and abs. I would wake up every morning with a really tight low back and would always try to stretch and crack my back to get it to go away and it never did. Once I started doing some glute med exercises in the morning and some hip flexor work my low back pain would be gone for the rest of the day. Can't believe we were never taught this stuff and that doctors never suggest it either.

Doing backpain fix 2 at the moment after a lot of low back issues for 5 or so years including two episodes of "throwing it out" and being bed ridden for a couple of days. I'm 38! Tight hip flexors was the most identifiable issue I had, this endless need to bend backwards to stretch them. The problem was actually weakness and shortness from years of school/college/office work. Now beginning phase 3 of the program and my glutes, hips and abs are much stronger than 3 months ago. I feel far more confident doing anything manual and don't feel the need to protect my back as much. The chronic pain has subsided significantly and driving is no longer a problem. Can't thank you enough Matt. After years of going nowhere with the medical profession / massage etc, I'm finally on the road to feeling like I did 10 years ago.

I have had 2 orthopedic surgeons tell me that I absolutely need hip replacement, and after seeing the xrays showing severe arthritis and cyst formation myself, I was pretty well convinced. Despite daily 30 min to 60 min varied workouts and stretching over last 2 years, I have increasing pain, am losing of ROM, strength and muscle tone. At the beginning of the pandemic, was sick and didn't do much for 2 months, and also stopped my 3-4 hours/ week of pretty hard swimming, which I still have not gotten back to. At the beginning of summer here, I agreed to a cortisone shot, which helped for about 3 days. Over a little bit of time pain worsened and ROM, also. Around that time, I started revisiting your channel, which I used to watch frequently ( when I had recovered from a 8 year old femur fracture, and had my pain issues well under control with the swimming, yoga and pilates which I did and taught.) So, I am very biased towards exercise, weight resistance training and stretching , And always felt tightness in my body when I couldn't do them, and much relief when I did. I have always worked on and been extremely flexible for as long as I can remember, and though the proximal femur fracture left me with some limits, I continued to re-establish strength and flexibility to a large degree, but have a lot of chronic imbalances, from scoliosis and a now nearly 2 " shorter leg, lacking lesser trocanter. Also, bunion and foot issues! SO, I am going to work my way through as many pertinent videos of yours for 6 weeks( at which time I am supposed to see surgeon to set up surgery, and not push so hard with my previous pilates work, to work more specifically on my hip movements , because I have seen some little bit of change in the 2 weeks I started with your beginner, "mom" workout, and no hip pain sleeping and fix videos. I have, in the past, enjoyed and agreed with what I saw you put up on Utube even though I felt I covered my ( and clients) bases with what I taught. and didn't "need" to implement your technique. However, I am convinced that the extreme pain I have is not because of that extreme arthritis, but because of slowing down, coupled with pretty profound lateral imbalances... I will sign up for your full program if I continue to see little changes and have endurance for more. ( right now, just running through exercises 2X, every other day, is even fatiguing, but am pressing on! Any wisdom appreciated!

Hi Matt, I purchased and practiced the exercises in your Healthy Hips 1 program. The exercises worked the hip muscles well and should have been achievable goals. Problem was I hurt more in my right hip the following 3 days after a session. I followed the program at a gentle level that felt appropriate for me about 6 weeks. The pain just got worse and I was not able to advance past my starting levels. I told my doctor about this 3 times before she ordered x-rays. My left hip is good but my right hip was "bone on bone" her words, not mine. I was prioritized for a Total Hip Replacement and being in Canada I waited for my surgery date 9 months later. Surgery was successful and it feels wonderful to move in a more natural ROM and pain free. My problem after 30 years of decreasing mobility is that I now have very tight hip muscles and a few other muscles I can't name. I have finished post surgery physio but still need muscle work. I believe the Healthy Hips 1 program is now appropriate for me, but want to ask if this is the right path now or is there another program I should try?

Can you lay on the bed? Most exercises can be done on the bed. I understand I have MS and a lot of spine disorders I can't get on the floor but I can lay on the bed. Also I found a massage table which is similar to the tables at PT and it's a game changer for doing exercises at home.

I think I'm feeling a combo of all three scenarios. WHen I work the flexors (leg presses) one side is weaker and hurts more. stretching is needed, and so is massage. I'm trying to find the balance between all three. Thanks for these tips!

I need this video but in relation to lower back/sacrum stiffness. I've had a persistent issue after getting up in the morning despite getting a decent bed, back + knee cushion sleeping, various exercises... I've seen so many videos and tried alot of things. How to tell when you need to do more strengthening or massage or stretching? .... And which exercises are best? Thanks in advance!

My psoas gets really tight after walking or at least that is what I think is the issue.. I get pain on the back left side of my hip right at the top of the gluteus maximus so I keep on stretching my psoas 😢 I think there is a sciatica related issue as well

Do these recommendations apply with a hip replacement? I have had soreness in the adductors but I know they got weak prior to and after surgery. Now I am at the point where I am doing PT to work on strength, balance, and mobility.

Is it weak hip flexors that would cause intense pain if I pull my legs up to my chest. The pain in that groin area is really intense. I can see how stretching might help but is it because they’re weak? I definitely sit A LOT! car, desk , etc thanks!!

Thank you for all of your hip flexor videos. I strained my right obturator externus back in 2012 from running and I still feel it sometimes when I run (and sometimes when I’m walking and my stride is off). I’m sure all the sitting I’ve been doing since Covid started isn’t helping anything either. Also, I haven’t checked your page, but do you know anything about achilles tendonitis? I have heel pain (usually my right, but sometimes my left) where it hurts seemingly randomly and so I end up walking on the ball of my feet and completely off of my heel to make it more tolerable. I haven’t been to the Dr yet, so I’m not 100% sure it’s that but I don’t think it’s plantar fasciitis because it’s more the heel than the center of the foot and it’s not all the time. Thanks for all your help with everything!

I have found that massage is a fleeting relief and usually make things worse. Basic stretching Is a short term relief as well. Most of the time a tight muscle is a sign of an OVERWORKED muscle. Bad habits & having a crooked body create much of these problems. Look up Egoscue on KZfaq. They helped me. It works IF YOU DO THE WORK. If your not interested in helping yourself and prefer OTHERS to do YOUR work. Don’t bother.

Does tight hip flexors cause PE?

I believe tight hip flexor is my issue and another reason I've had to get hip replacement surgery because I sit prolong on the job and really wasn't addressing them because I didn't know about "hip flexors" can be an issue. I'm trying to avoid any further issues when I return to work. I'm still having a bit of iritation with the right hip flexor even after my right hip replacement. Maybe it's because it needs strengthening because I'm massaging it and stretching. I feel like my life will be nothing but stretching from now on.. this can't be possible.. all day, all night just stretching, really. My hips feel almost like normal I'm dedicated to doing with I must to not have issues in the future and live an active lifestyle; however , I'm still trying to figure exactly what I need to do. I started following your page right before I went in for my first replacement back in September 2021 and was going to come visit you in Nor. Cali but figured I need more than 1 visit so I didn't come. Anyways, thanks for the videos and any advise you can give I will appreciate it. I'm still doing physical therapy for another month I'm 7 weeks on my right and 5.5 months on the left

Do you need to increase protein or be at a calorie excess for your muscles to build stronger with the exercises? Or is a low calorie 'normal' diet ok. I'm a former bodybuilder so my mind always goes to eating more (mostly protein) when I want to strengthen/build muscles but I understand that may not be applicable here the same way.

He wants yours hips to feel better but he also NEEDS THE MONEY LOL Sorry but you aren't playing hockey or doing anything amazing. Your lifestyle changes reflect more than the stretching or strengthening. If you were improving I would buy your book but it seems like you have plateaued.
