Don't sleep in the clothes you are going to wear in the morning! The moisture trapped in your bag will cause convection cooling. When you get up. Wear wool and poly mix. Get a bag rated for much colder weather. Put your change of clothes under your bag to be warm in the morning. I was a Winter Operations instructor in the military. Good Luck!

I've been camping all my life and also in the Army so I have slept outside a lot in all different kinds of weather. Never sleep in your clothes in your sleeping bag. Your bag isn't able to trap your body heat nearly as well. Also, you need to get a much better sleeping bag than something rated for 30 degrees. If its rated for a temperature just add about 20 degrees onto it and thats probable the lowest temp you will actually be relatively comfortable at.

Ok . carpet on the bed of the truck will help. Two. when sleeping at a Walmart alway fined a corn where cars only pass on one side of you. And never sleep next to a semi. Look into a heater that is electric. You can run the power cord from the inside of your truck. Put two batteries on the floor of the back seat. A Dc convert box.Yes more money. But way warmer and less thoughts of poison gases. And put more blankets on your bed my daughters call it nesting. And you should pack most or all your clothes and extra blankets under your bed. It will insulate you from the cold air under you. Hope it helps Mav.

I lived in my Honda Civic the entire winter in Ma with temps that were single digits. And then the polar vortex I used the reflectix as well. My sleeping system is what kept me warm & being able to reach the cars ignition was a bonus. I used left over reflectix to put as a layer in between 2 sleeping bags. I used a 30degree bag and then a cheap Walmart 10$ bag outside of the good bag A camping mat, 11/2 inch piece of foam and a couple of blankets under the sleeping bags & 2 heavy blankets on top. For the most part once I got the sleeping system perfected I slept like a baby and quite warm as long as I stayed Inside the sleeping bags ,in the morning id slide out long enough to kick the ignition over and wait 15-20 minutes for the car to warm before Id slide out of the sleeping bags. I would prepare a thermos of coffee the night before and drink my coffee waiting for the car to heat up while still in my sleeping bags At night time usually around nine 930 Id heat the car up one last time, get in the my sleeping system ,shut the car down until about 5 to 6 AM the next morning. When it got to be negative below with the -25 wind factors I literally had to wear 4 pair of insulated socks, thermal bottoms and a sweatshirt to sleep in. Less clothing is not better when it gets to be a certain degree you just don’t want to sweat in your sleeping bag. The reflectix as a barrier with your bags is beneficial

I used to backpack in the snow with no campfire. The most important item is a sleeping bag that can handle the cold. My bag was rated to 5°. But actually it was good to 15°. That bag and thermal underwear made for a toasty warm night. Try it, you'll like it!

Diesel engines can be very hard to start on cold mornings so truckers will leave them running to keep the engine warm, or they will start them every hour for 10 minutes for same reason. Truckers also run their electronics from inverters so they will leave trucks running to keep from running battery down. If they have a few items not much battery draw but some trucks are decked out like small apartments.

Awesome video bud! Congrats on taking that first step! Take it for what it’s worth. I find it much quieter parking out on the end of the rows as far away from the front doors. Usually no semi-trucks to annoy ya, Also placing a layer of the reflectex between your sleeping pad and the cot helps reflect your body heat. A set of the led lights around the top of the camper too allows you to brighten and dim the lights to prevent the brutal waking moment. It also comes with a remote for easy access. There is no way to fully prepare 100%, experience is the best teacher. I hope to also be putting out a new “back at it” video, I’m hitting the road this weekend. Will explain more in the video for the absence. Any questions, by no means am I an expert, however I’ll be glad to provide my own experiences, Happy Trails brother.

Mac, I knew you were going to be cold from the beginning of the video. If screening at the video could have helped I would have told you to get better prepared by insulating the floor, the sides of the truck box, the windows and seal up the cracks around the back hatch and tailgate. The hatch and the tailgate actually would have been difficult to do when you need a way in and out. When I was your age I couldn't wait to get out fishing in early spring. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada and when the snow would melt I would be gone to find my favorite lakes. I sometimes drove hundreds of miles only to find the lake still frozen over. The nights were freezing cold at that time of year so what I did was removed my tailgate, measured out a piece of plywood to fit where the tailgate was and where the hatch on the cap was. I built a door that I made seal air tight. I insulated the box and the windows and sprayed a small amount of insulation on the inside of the cap. Other than that there was nothing fancy, just a raised bed, my sleeping bag, extra blankets and extra clothes. I had a Coleman heater I would warm the place up with and shut it off before going to sleep. I was nice and comfortable all night long. Even when the temperature was in the minus teens. I even stayed in it at minus forty during the months of January and February when I became homeless for a while. I hope this helps. It doesn't have to be expensive

speaking from experience, you will stay warmer on that cot if you put a thick blanket on it first to block any cold air that will settle under it. You'll see a big difference that way. Another thing you could do is get a sheet of inch thick styroboard and put it on your floor with a sheet of plywood over it. Or, you could take the bed liner out and fill the grooves on both sides with spray foam (single expansion should do) and then put a plywood floor down. Doing it that way would save you some head room. You could also use styroboard to insulate the gunnels of the truck bed. I would also look around for some old locking file cabinets you could mount in there for storage. I had a two draw cabinet that was about four feet wide by two and a half feet tall that was perfect for your set up. I have a ton of ideas for this kind of set up.

Ok heres my long winded advice for sleeping in a truck or tent on a cot....My favorite sleeping bag is a Coleman Montauk 20 degree square bag. I used to work for Coleman and trust me this is my favorite all purpose bag. I've camped 100s of times and down to-10 degrees and it was perfect even though it says 20 degree. Plus it's over sized 6.5" so you can get your head all the way inside the bag if you want. It has a "zipper plow" which is awesome for keeping the zipper from binding up. I generally sleep in shorts and tshirt even in cold, socks optional. I prefer no socks. Flip flops for jumping out quick to pee! Heres my theory...Your body heat inside the bag builds up better without jeans in between you and the bag. It creates a pocket of body heat. Jeans will sort of allow the cold air to stay. Test it both ways for yourself. The poly outer on these bags holds the heat in super well and the cotton inner is super soft and well padded. (Obviously my bag of choice will vary in a long hike where weight is an issue but hey you have a truck so no issues with a large heavy super cozy bag right). Here's a link I found that matches mine in spec....$46.44 at Wal-Mart... www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Montauk-20-Degree-Sleeping-Bag/44504329 This similar bag at Amizin is $29.99...basically the same properties... www.amazon.com/Coleman-Brazos-Degree-Sleeping-Bag/dp/B00363V3OK/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmrnull_3?adgrpid=61568989128&hvadid=274684383807&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9024183&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=10332999242654666616&hvtargid=kwd-332487267275&keywords=coleman+montauk+sleeping+bag&qid=1554542859&s=gateway&sr=8-3-fkmrnull Montauk 20 is bigger than a "mummy bag" because its square but seriously man it's rip stop poly nylon outside and cotton inside about 2" thick. Best sleeping all purpose bag I've ever used. In winter it's super warm. In summer just fold it and sleep on top of it with a light blanket. Super cozy. Another tip I have is use in colder camping a decent air bed on top of the cot. About 5-6" thick. Don't overfill the airbed. Allow some slack. You'll sink in a little but the air cushion will keep you warmer from the cold air below plus it's way more comphy than those self inflating pads. Get a 12v or rechargeable quick pump that inflates and deflates. This is what I use. Works great for airbeds and pool inflatables etc... www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-QuickPump-Rechargeable/55283670?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222228067671569&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=172575980114&wl4=pla-342885212877&wl5=9024183&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=55283670&wl13=&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwnKHlBRDLARIsAMtMHDHB9mkKLz66PwYLAOtxyCMQ9vcFahW8ZXiaSPi-mv_76Ta1Mft74y8aAks6EALw_wcB The self inflating pads are ok for hard core minimalism and lightweight hiking but you're in a truck. So I say take what you need to be comphy! 👍👊😀. BTW Nice Dutch oven @17:23 hahahaaaa 💩💩💩

With all the planes being grounded we had to close up the condo early because 3 different flights were cancelled and the only one available was leaving late one night. I started my drive back to Maryland and by midnight I was exhausted. I pulled over at a rest stop right over the Georgia line and slept in my Chevy Cruze. It was incredibly hard to relax being out in the open like that. I had broken sleep til 4 and hit the road again.

Maybe a little buddy rather than a big buddy and a carbon detector and you could leave it on all night. Something ive found out is the reflecticx lined with cheap cut by the foot carpet from a hardware store on the floor and roof helps insulate a lot on top of the canopys stock carpet stuff.

As a x over the road tractor trailer driver the biggest reason leave your truck on is either for heat or air conditioning. I'm telling you right now I have had some of my best sleep and the sleeper of my truck. A big part of that was the diesel engine running. Some states are now outlawing leaving your engine run. A lot of companies are putting in generators to run the heat and air conditioning.

That'll work. I have essentially the same setup in a Toyota Tacoma (much smaller than your Ford). A cot I built specifically for the truck and I also use a Mr Heater. Because the low profile of the cap I turned it into a pop-up to have more head room. I've used it a lot in the plains (southern MN, S. Dakota, N. Dakota) and in the Rockies. I run the heater in the PM and AM and shut it off when sleeping. Last October I got caught in a snowstorm in the Bighorns and it worked fine. Cozy in fact. Even though everything inside, all my food, etc., froze. Temps were in the single digits and it was blizzarding. I have an old -30 sleeping bag and it's a key component of my gear. It, and lots of blankets. Once snuggled in there's no need for the heater. Another important component are home-made honey/nut granola bars. They may be the most important component! If you travel to the windy west and great plains you'll learn how great it is to have a hard-sided rig. Nice rig. Enjoy!

When you get off the highway, look for a neighborhood with street parking. Much quieter. Also, for insulation purposes, take 1/2 pvc pipe and make the shape of your window with elbow connectors only slightly larger than your window, then glue that insulation to the pvc frame and then install clips around the border of your windows and clip the pvc into place.

Mav quick tip try put a small thin ish blanket inside your sleeping bag. Having something on top of a winter rated sleeping bag does nothing but add weight. Try sleep with thermals on as well rather then normal trousers as they are wrapped closer to your skin so keep your body heat closer and better to you then just normal clothing. Then you won't need heater and you may even get to hot. So remember small blanket inside of your sleeping bag

Tips: Enter/exit the truck with the tailgate shut. Have a way to lock the glass hatch from inside. Sleep in clean, normal clothing in case you have to bail early or the cops show up. Get a bed rug or bed mat to insulate the cold coming up from underneath. Keep a piss bottle inside next to the bed. Cut down on the bright interior lighting. Sleep with orange foam shooting ear plugs to keep out the noise. Otherwise, you are doing good. A simple set up like yours is all you need and wake up the next day to a new adventure.

What a brief, fun adventure in your new rig! F150 quad cabs are great! I get one as a loaner every time I take my Hybrid in for service at my local Ford store. Its just fun to drive. Quite a bit of practical advice in all these comments. I'm in the RV & Bus Conversion industry. I would be most concerned with more insulation for obvious reason. More important, that moisture build up is big deal little brother, its your immune systems worst enemy. Seriously. Body is already taking a beating from having to raise its temperature for survival during the night, the moisture doesn't help it. Breathing dense moisture is not good. Need an air dryer type device. Getting sick away from home is miserable especially when you have to drive. Camp smart, not dumb! Its ok though to make a few mistakes though on the way, we all do.

The truck bed gets cold....lay some 3/4 plywood down, top it with a bed mat/liner or ever rubber mapping for more insulation. Personally I would dump the cot and get a thick foam rubber mattress. Those trucks are going idle all night...it’s their heating/AC/electrical power supply and keeps engines and fuel warm. New trucks have APUs now.

Check out military issue sleep systems. They come with a summer bag, a winter bag, a gortex liner and a stuff sack that can hold it all. They all zip into each other and you can use just one bag with the liner or both bags with the liner or all three bags with the liner/no liner etc. They offer a lot of options. They don't take up a lot of space, but they aren't tiny. Often, I would sleep in my summer bag with the gortex liner and stuff the winter bag in the sack and use it as a pillow. Poncho liners AKA woobies are great for when it is hot and you just want to lay on the bag. I used one in Afghanistan and didn't have a heater, it was still cold AF. I would run my laptop with a couple of programs going and put it in my bag LOL! I appreciate your content and look forward to more Dude! Stay safe out there Bro!

I have a 100 watt Renogy solar panel, two six volt batteries and a 400 watt power inverter. It's awesome. You can be out fishing while you're charging up your laptop, phone, camera etc..all from sun power. You can do more than that with it too. You can get a small slow cooker and have supper cooking while you're busy fishing or whatever, you can have a lighting system hooked up to it, I have one of those small portable dvd players and I'm able to watch dvds on it, plugged into my power system, at night, and it doesn't kill my batteries. Those portable power units that you can charge up and take with you are ridiculously expensive and it only lasts so long and then you need to charge it up somehow. Not the best option in my opinion. Solar is the way of the future lol.
