Germany's WC 1986 squad was hard to beat but the finesse department was seriously underrepresented. And this become apparent against Uruguay. The effort was there, they produced a lot of crosses, they fired shots from distance but their finishing was subpar and they seemed to lack a plan B in buildup play too. Of course, Germany deserved the late equalizer but the main takeaway from the game was: for Germany to have a lasting impact at WC 1986, they would have to outwork their opponents, not outplay them.
@janholewa856 ай бұрын
which is exactly what germany does til "Jogi löw" he fucked it up big time. now they play a fancy posession game with some finesse players like Leroy sane and can't even win a "Blumentopf". I prefer this outworking football a 1000 times. what you (people) may forget this squad won european champion '80 vice world champion '82 vice world champion '86 world champion '90 vice european champion '92 european champion '96
@sindbad84116 ай бұрын
That's quite a stretch and your opinion exclusively. The South Americans were once again and as in 1966 in England simply brutal. The ref was overwhelmed by the amount of fouls and had no chance to recognize even clear pen in the 85th min because pushing / defending a ball in the box by hand. Till this day Uruguayan football teams have a bad rep because of their brutality in tournaments almost 40 and 60 years ago.
@Harry-tb8yo4 ай бұрын
@@janholewa85 It wasn't "this squad" that won the Euros 1980. Bernd Schuster and Hansi Müller in midfield made a huge difference and provided more options. They could outplay their opponents in many cases but when that didn't work they could still resort to outwork them. Both didn't play the World Cups 1982 and 1986 so the only option left against all opponents was to outwork them and that's not how to win silverware. Making it to the finals 82 and 86 was a huge success for these teams and more than one could expect, especially if you look at other much more talented teams which didn't make it to the finals. Jogi Löw also didn't "fuck it up". He made use of his talented players between 2006 and 2016 but not thereafter. Euro final 2008, World Cup semifinal 2010, Euro semifinal 2012, World Cup 2014, Euro semifinal 2016. Only Helmut Schön had a comparable record but that didn't prevent him from ending his tenure with a result as disappointing as Löw did. The times when German teams could rely on outworking more talented but less physical opponents are long gone. The group stage game against South Korea in 1994 gave us a first glimpse of that.

@daveinspace59996 ай бұрын

Full of rough body contacts. By today’s standard, the ref would have produced at least FOUR red cards and numerous yellow ones.
