i LOVE the clues. red being the only one of the clones who could talk because she was the only real human being with intelligence there. her voice being choppy and restrained because she got strangled as a kid. dahlia’s clone wanting to cut her face because the original dahlia had plastic surgery. there’s just so many hints littered throughout and i appreciate that

She isn´t the only human being with intelligence tho. Remember, they are all the same, they just didn´t learn to talk bc no one talks underground. Red was a kid when she was switched, so she already knew how to talk, but she didn´t get to do it underground. Abraham is just as dumb as Gabe, he just wasn´t raised the same way. They are both loud and noisy and clumsy, but Abraham didn´t learn to talk, so he just makes grunts and weird noises. I think language here is also a metaphor for communication and/or education, not giving them that tool is what prevents them from coming together and rebelling against the reality they were forced into.

The point is showing two different economic classes, which is why it doesn't really matter if she was overground or underground. It's the upbringing and the resources that make the true difference. When she says "we're Americans" its kind of pointing out how they're really the same as everyone else.

@@antoineporche-rideaux4841 But they are not just evil because they woke up one morning and decided to be so. Material conditions, access to certain type of resources and your psychosocial environment are crucial to your development as a human being. Red demonstrates this exact thing living as Adelaide for years. She even managed to overcome the inability to speak because she had access to stuff the tethered did not (therapy, family, friends, nutrition, etc.). And the same thing happens in reverse too; the true Adelaile is left undergound, with a damaged larynx from which she never recovered, becoming more and more like the people surrounding her until they realize she's different because she wants her life back. It was her the one that organized the tethered to escape and take vengeance by murdering their counterparts arguably becoming the monster. None is inherently evil here.

I adored the messages about socioeconomic status in this movie. A lot of people idolize how beautiful and put together a lot of celebrities are, but that’s because they can afford perfect skin care, diets, healthcare, vacations, breaks from work, therapy, childcare, education, good/safe housing, nice clothes, etc. The only real difference is the resources they have access to vs. ordinary people who will lose everything if they miss a week of work.

The movie is about "US vs THEM"... It's about class. The privileged and the underprivileged fighting against each other, even though they are the same. The "Hands across America" thing was about bringing people together, from all walks of life... In 1986 that was a big thing, which is what Lupita Niongo's character remembers the most as a kid. The movie starts off with the promo.

BINGO! I always thought this was so on the nose it shocked me everyone has trouble figuring this out. But I also think that is kind of the point. The above ground people are oblivious to the fact that the underground clones exist in the same way the upper class ignore the working poor in real life. So your average viewer refuses to see themselves in the vapid oblivious protagonist family. Even to the point of trying to come up with complex reasons for how the girls switched, instead of the obvious. The only difference between the above and underground people is where they are born. Just like the U.S.

The message is: some people are treated like subhumans - poor, homeless, disabled, ethnic or sexual minorities, addicts, etc. But the only thing that separates them from the society or makes them "evil" sometimes, is their upbringing. That's why "real" woman acted as her shadow, and her shadow acted as her "real self". Take someone from the low life to a "normal" life and they will became "normal".This movie is a social commentary. The horror and comedy and thriller elements are here just as vehicles for the story.

I really liked this one, probably more than "Get out". Peele mastered the "something is off"-feeling. Something only a few movies were able to capture, and are a great source for horror since it plays into your own subconscious and causes your own mind to cause you dread. I haven't seen the Mrs. trying to avoid looking at the screen this much for a long time. While the explanation/finale of "Get out" was probably better, the first half of this movie is what made me enjoy this one more.

The horror of the movie is that the protagonist, who is actually an underground person who came above ground and assimilated did so at the expense of her other half, so to speak, and having made a good life for herself put down the demonstration of the underground people in order to maintain the status quo. I think this allegory works even without a directly economic interpretation. Anyone clawing their way up the social ladder or assimilating into an in-group might deny that very same thing to others to retain their own advantages and maintain the status quo.

I think one of the biggest differences between this film and "Get Out" is that "Get Out" works equally well as a metaphor/fable AND as a conventional narrative story, while "Us" just works best as a metaphor/fable. As such, the more detailed plot mechanics in this film don't really hold up to full logic or scrutiny, and leave some pretty major plot holes and dreamlike/nonsensical elements in play. To be clear, that doesn't make it a BAD film: just more of an art-house style film that required more "dream logic" and isn't meant to be taken completely literally.

Get Out also was easier to “get” in terms of the social message. Us did seem to have social commentary (an enslaved race rising up and rebelling), but it wasn’t clear what point was being made by it. In other words, Get Out is a straight horror-satire in the tradition of Stepford Wives; Us seems more in the tradition of horror movies that have a social or political subtext, but it’s never the focus.

So they made a movie with obvious social commentary which is not easy to dig from the movie. It's not enjoyable to watch, listen or feel. I mean some horrors have boobs in it, funny dialogs or just cool funny monsters. "Us" just and only gives you anxiety, it's a trash movie, and it covers itself by confusing ppl with it's plot holes. We live in creasy time when such trash would be praised just for some obvious social commentary and having black ppl in it.

@@smokinggun8418 I think it's better than you're giving credit. YMMV may vary of course; I can't talk you into enjoying what you didn't enjoy. What I will say is that a film can have a confusing message and plot holes and still work, particularly as horror that aims to be unsettling, which you may not like but it's got a venerable tradition in the genre. The acting was excellent (particualrly Lupito Nyongo), and it wasn't predictable--both things that are more than I can say about most horror films. I don't scare easily from horror movies (I've seen too many), but I did definitely find it entertaining. (It also had one big laugh for me--the one involving the digital assistant--which was just enough to remind us of Jordan Peele's comedy background without turning it into a horror-comedy.)

@@Kylopod message of the movie is not confusing. Plot holes are. Yes, horrors should be unsettling but still manage to entertain by dialogs or visuals; or at least pay off. I don't buy really predictable final twist of "Us" for amount of anxiety that rest of the movie gives. Maybe it's just me, ok. The acting was excellent but I don't enjoy women struggling to talk, nore conversations about eating raw rabbits, nore violence for the sake of itself. Call me sociopath at will. And I LOVE "Coherence" which is as close to "Us" as can be, gives you tension without disgust, good acting with good dialogs and probably best surprising final ever without a twist. And we all can agree, "Key and Peele" are brilliant sketches.

There are a whole lot of fellow Americans who live lives of brutal desperation, but we’d rather try to forget about them than do what it takes to remedy this situation. Hands Across America raised very little cash for homeless people, was little more than what we might call a “virtue signal” today, and was intended as such. Here’s a bit from a Collider piece about the movie: “We are shaped by the privilege of our surroundings, ones we don’t get to choose. That’s not to say that choices don’t matter, but we should look at the luxury of who gets to have those choices in the first place. In order to have a normal existence, Red had to break the rules and steal Adelaide’s life. It may be easy to chalk that up to who does and doesn’t have a soul, but it would be wiser to see who is given an opportunity and who has to take it.”
@TJB-qn5fy
@TJB-qn5fy 8 ай бұрын
The thing that gets me is that somehow/some way, the ones who have to fight for an opportunity hold it against those who are given it. And instead of trying to catch up, they'd rather pull them back. The whole "if I can't have it, neither can you" mentality... Too many who have been given the opportunity have tried to "pay it forward" by then giving an opportunity to someone still fighting/having to fight, and the fighter used it to sabotage more often than to take full advantage. Human nature, maybe? Idk. Laziness and greed, mostly. It's also why the divide exists and will always continue to exist. It took someone to fight in order to get to the point to give. Nobody was just "given" anything in the beginning...

That's an interesting point. I also think the whole mind control project or shared souls is one that can just as well be interpreted as just an assumption of the character. Why? It reminds me of that (true) story about the separated twins, that somehow just happened to become fire chiefs on opposite sides of the country. And this further serve to illustrate the aspect about environment and chance-opportunity. She wasn't dancing because of mind control, but because she was a dancer. That doesn't mean the intent of the seemingly abandoned project wasn't some MK Ultra thing of course. But another use could simply be spare parts, or full replacements swap for undesirable citizens. Or another version, there was an epidemic of twin births due to natural or external mutagenesis and this was simply a method to cover it up. Some may have been spared the basement time to account for the expected numbers of twins of course.

i love this film, it's definitely one of those films you have to see twice. Jordan peele is a mastermind, his films are messages of if you believe this stuff is really happening or not. Many many clues and hints in this as well the second go around when you're watching. The rabbits were the clones i believe as well then government made the clones but couldn't have a soul of their own so the government left the clones to die in the tunnels and they just ate the rats. Red and Adelaide, were obviously switched and those clues are throughout the movie the real Red was scared to go back to santa cruz everything she was eating or touching was Red and the other colors were blue to kind of give you the hints. In the car when she's telling jason to snap his fingers to the rhythm of the beat they were both off tempo that's why zora looked at them weird. Red on the beach saying she has trouble communicating with others was the other clue. obviously the hands across america and the red suits are the last things Adelaide seen before she was switched. The michael jackson thriller jacket was the inspiration for their outfits, the scissors to cut the tethers (kill themselves) etc. The other twist of the movie was jason was also like Red, there's a theory red went back down at some point to steal her real jason and switched them and that's why jason was able to walk backwards with his tether and set him on fire. The film is great though once you can understand what jordan peele was trying to tell.

First of all, this movie really isn't hard to understand. It's important to not overthink it for one thing but I'll explain. The young girl from the beginning, Adelaide is the original and the girl that she saw in the mirror maze was her doppelganger. You really needed to pay attention to the story that the mother in the red outfit was telling when she first showed up because that's really important to the entire movie. She's explaining how her own life was stolen by the copy of herself and she had to go through a really painful version of that life while she was underground after being switched with her copy. That scene where they show in more detail what happened in the mirror maze is very important as well because it explains that the woman we think was the original the whole time is actually the copy because she took the real Adelaide and trapped her underground in order to take over her life, so years later, the woman in red, who is called "Red" and is in fact the REAL Adelaide, comes back to try and reclaim the life that was stolen from her by her copy. It's not that the copies don't have souls at all, more like half a soul because the original people have the other half of that soul. The copy of Adelaide was trying to stop her from being successful at reclaiming her life because obviously the doppelganger is evil and her goal was to completely take over and she felt she couldn't do that with Adelaide still alive, so she killed her and took her place. Personally, I enjoy this movie much more than Get Out. I'm not really a fan of Jordan Peele's movies, so far this is the only one I actually like. I don't see this as a bad movie. A movie being hard for some people to understand doesn't make it a bad movie. Although, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I don't think it's fair to say a movie is bad because it wasn't understandable to you. That's just how I feel personally though. Peele's movies are very much up for interpretation but the idea of this movie was that the Tethered were designed to be able to control those above, but the experiment failed. It didn't work, so they were abandoned and they were actually just mimicking the real people above since they were faulty. But Red was different because she wasn't really one of them and was able to teach and train them to get revenge and attack those above. If they kill the one they are tethered to, they are free to just live their own lives. Pluto was the best example because he obviously didn't learn how do stop mimicking as well because he was still doing everything his counterpart did.

I love this movie and saw it in the theaters. It was scary for sure and an interesting concept as well. The twins in this movie are the actresess of Emma Rachel and Ross's daughters in the show Friends which is interesting. It's trying to talk about the high sociaty vs lower sociaty and how the higher gets everything they want vs the lower having to deal with what they have and the hardships that come with it.

A cool detail about the title, is that it has two possible meanings, "us" which can be used by the family, or surfacers, or the shadowpeople, and it says somethi g about how we divide ourselves in groups, to the detriment of all. The second meaning is "U.S.", so, an analysis about the country itself, and about "americans".

I always thought this was about American capitalism & social structure. In the real world for every family living like the "above ground people" there is a family (multitudes really) living/working in squaller to make the "above ground people's" lives possible. So All the while the "above ground people" simply refuse to even acknowledge this dynamic exists. But the only true difference between these families is where they were born. The movie makes this connection literal/direct. By having the worker/slaves be clones of "above ground people" and PROVING there is no difference by having them switch as children. The underground girl escaping and assimilating into the aboveground and preceding to not care what happens to the undergrown people, cuz she got out and that's all that matters to her is also a social critique. Our System (the US) turns us all into selfish animals above and below.

Funny thing about this movie is that a year before this even came out, before the trailer, my town had a cartoony tourism billboard with a beach-bound family that looked exactly like the one in this movie. The mother wore a hat that was the same color. The girl was looking at her phone. The boy had a beach sand toys. The father had the beard and glasses.

For another twist on the whole doppelgänger experience .. I’d recommend, a film called “The One I Love” released in 2014. The movie stars Mark Duplass, Elisabeth Moss, and Ted Danson .. it’s more of a romantic thriller/comedy and last I knew was available on HBOMAX in the US. Also of course, as I’m sure other comments will mention .. the Twilight Zone episode “Mirror Image”

I think she overthinks things. Film is often about suspension of dusbelief. This isn't remotely plausible but that isn't the point. It's using an abstract concept brought to life, and there could be a social commentary involved as well. Horror works best when it isn't completely explained.

Honestly I've watched this several times and each watch I get it a little more. The general theme of equality is pretty apparent to me but processing it in more detail requires some effort. I think like what others have said, the key is not getting wrapped up in the details and back story. The fact they are clones doesn't really matter other than a convenient back story that requires some reconsideration on what defines "other" in a social sense.

So yeah, this movie is for sure about economic differences and classism. On top of that, it shows everyone has multiple sides to them. :( The tethered HEAVILY (although can't say they only represented this) represented the less fortunate and those that society wishes to forget about and hide. :( So the line "we're Americans" makes a whole lot of sense..And while this movie is far creepier than Get Out, it's message is still just as great and one that should be told

@gingetomassi8153
@gingetomassi8153 Жыл бұрын
It's not hard to draw a class analysis metaphor from this: the tethered suffer, with no or little will of their own, living a mirror life to the people above, hoping for freedom; the underclasses in capitalist society attempt to mimic the comforts, pleasures, indulgences of the bourgeoisie, the ruling capitalist class, in a farcical game of pretend. The main underlying theme in the film deals with income inequality, specifically in America. When Gabe asks, “Who are you people?” Red replies “We’re Americans,” and even the title of the film is an indicator (Us / U.S.). “The film is an allegory about a nation so divided between those above and below that it feels like the only outcome is a bloody one of self-destruction.” The final battle even takes place in a classroom at some point... it’s literally a “class struggle”. The tethered demonstrate that the differences between people are superficial and based on our status and upbringing. They’re “us” without the luxury of choice many people of privilege take for granted.In contrast to the tethered, the Wilsons are representative of the middle class. They are a perfectly functional family unit, living comfortably and even affording some luxuries like a vacation home and a boat. However, they make envious remarks about the Tylers who have better things- a nicer house, car, and the latest technology. They represent the upper class. They live very wealthy lives, drink all day, and barely talk to one another. This idea of being a member of the middle class looking up is even foreshadowed early on when young Adelaide’s dad is winning her a prize. The man at the booth tells them they can currently walk away with a prize from the second level… or keep playing for a chance to win a prize from the highest level. Peele’s main focus in this exploration of social class is centered on Adelaide. She is someone who rose up from the lower class (through wrongful means) and now fights tooth and nail to protect her new status. She seized her opportunity and ran with it, pretending that the generations of struggle she came from didn’t exist and that as long as she looked the other way, she didn’t have to return to it. Red was left behind to rot and lost her status, so she attempts to reclaim it by starting a revolution since she is the only one below who is aware of the life she is missing out on. This dynamic gives added meaning to the moment when Red tells Adelaide that they could have escaped together all those years ago instead of Adelaide leaving her behind. Red essentially tells Adelaide that she didn’t have to drag her down to pull herself up. Adelaide is aware of this and shows survivor’s guilt when she sympathizes with the tethered children as they die. She takes pity and sees herself in them since they were just trying to do the same thing she had managed to accomplish. A noteworthy detail in the film is that the escalator connecting the surface world to the underground only goes down. Many times in society we hear how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and that it’s systematic. This is symbolized by an escalator that is built to always go down, never lifting people up and forcing them to stay in their undesirable situations. There is a great deal of moral ambiguity to the film and it’s difficult to ascertain which side is good and which is evil. It’s just as difficult in real life, so much so that we often decide to do what Jason does in the end: put his mask back on and just go with the flow. However, that may just perpetuate the cycle of choosing not to truly evaluate who we are, both as individuals and as a society, and thus turn a blind eye to the problem until it becomes undeniable as it does in the film. It is possible that Jason was swapped out also during last year’s trip to the vacation home. The family makes multiple remarks about last year: When Jason is asked about his magic trick, he said he left it there last year, but he doesn’t know how to make it work anymore. Also, when he gets locked in the closet, his sister comments “Didn’t this happen last year?” He seems to have forgotten a lot in the past year, and when the doppelgangers come to the driveway and his dad asks Jason to get the bat, he remarks “What bat?” while his sister immediately knows where it is. The most striking detail comes when Adelaide is trying to get him to snap on rhythm. He has a hard time doing so, and Adelaide isn’t in rhythm either, hinting that they are both tethered. This comes into play later on when Pluto is holding the match and is snapping perfectly in rhythm. It’s as if he’s letting Adelaide know that it’s actually him and he smiles at Jason as if to say, “She knows I’m her real son.” Then when he dies in front of her, Adelaide yells out “No!” and reaches out, shedding tears for the death of the son she’s been raising all this time, excluding the past year. He couldn’t speak because of the burns on his face, and considering Adelaide was silenced by her doppelganger who crushed her throat when they switched places, the real Jason was likely silenced by his tethered counterpart when they switched. He probably tried to do the same magic trick last year, and while it didn’t work for him on the surface, the real Jason was underground playing with a match instead of a lighter and burned his mouth, searing it shut. This specific commentary shows us that seemingly innocuous actions done by the upper class often have devastating consequences for the lower class. There are a number of other signs in the film that point to Jason being a tethered as well: -Jason, like Adelaide, doesn’t talk much and is much closer to her than his dad or sister -His family comments in the car that he has been using strange new vocabulary -The girls at the beach make fun of him because he’s building a sand ... tunnel -Like his mother who was eating strawberries, he was the only other family member who wasn’t eating fish, perhaps because he was also tired of eating meat as a tethered -Adelaide and Jason are the only two whose doppelgangers aren’t trying to kill them. Red did towards the end but hers was calculated and prolonged. Pluto just wanted to play with Jason -Pluto tries to communicate with Jason in the closet. Pluto and Red are the only doppelgangers who attempt to communicate with a surface dweller -When the twins first attack, they only attack the sister… they know Jason is a tethered -The name Pluto might also be a bit of a giveaway. Pluto was widely considered to be just another planet until recent years, just like the real Jason who was just a regular kid until a year ago when he was swapped out and shunned by society.

it’s best to think about it as less of a story with a reason why than more of a twilight zone story. like with “nightmare at 20000 feet” you don’t find out where the gremlin comes from it’s just there - but if you pay attention to the themes it’s a story about mental health/ptsd you touched on the theme/metaphor at the end: the point is that it doesn’t matter which is which. it’s a story about class. they are all “americans” no matter if you grew up lower or higher it’s luck of the draw and if you want to climb out of the “lower class” you’re gonna have to do some pretty horrible things. also: kinda sad you didn’t catch the goonies reference lol

For me its about that every person has a dark side which we dont usually see under normal conditions. People from underground ate raw meat and were brutal but - if raised on the ground (normal society we know) like her, they would be normal people. Its a movie about society - thats why Us can also translate to US - United States.

Here’s my take: the government creates a rift between portions of the population. Some get to LIVE the American dream while others are forced to WATCH the American dream while they suffer. Even though they are equally human at their core. If that goes on for too long, the watchers will get sick of having the “dream” waved in front of their faces, and then they rebel. They are hurt and angry and desperate. That’s the meaning.

I really liked this movie I think Get Out is more thematically rich but Us has very creepy and anonymous feel to it my only issue with this movie is the way the reveal the twist, if Peele would have left that to audience that is she a copy or duplicate and the movie ended the same way Jason stare at Addie but without flash back explaining the twist before fading away she clicks one last time and then fade to black that would be such a great debate to have in community same as the ending of The Shinning when camera zoom into Jack's photo in the Hotel

I understand how you feel about this one. I'm usually very good at finding the underlying narrative as well (and therefore can usually predict movies and stories) but this one took me a second watch until I picked up on the subtle clues given with the relationship with the neighbors. Once the economic difference stands out to you between them, it suddenly all clicks with the rest of the movie and you get that it's about wealth (or lack thereof). I love this movie but also respect if you still hate it. Thanks for sharing your honest opinions as always!😄
