US History 1 Review from Gather Round Early Elementary & Early Reader

We took about 6 weeks to go through the 20 lessons in this US History 1 from Gather Round. I wasn’t sure if we’d like it, having already done and LOVED Early American History from Beautiful Feet Books as well as touched on Masterbooks America’s story 1. Unit one covers through the French and Indian War.
I wanted to see how it might present History (especially knowing it comes through a biblical world view), and also how my kids would engage with the worksheets. I was worried it would feel like busy work, but we adapted this to work for us since we are just using this unit for History and not as our full curriculum like it’s intended.
Overall I liked it, and thought it was beautifully put together and allowed me to facilitate some great conversations with my 2nd and 3rd grader. Next unit we will do is US History 2…all the way through 6.
Second half of the video I’ll take you through a few lessons to see the differences in the early reader vs early elementary student packs.

Hi. Did you buy the hard copy or the digital one? If digital, how much did you spend on printing and bidding? I still considering with one will be tipper. Tks

I buy digital, which has come in handy because i can change student book versions if needed. For example, changing from early reader to early elementary student print outs for my middle child she wants less tracing/matching and more free writing. Also since we will circle around to this again someday when the kids are diff ages, I’ll have the digital already with all student packs. For these in the video, I printed with my Epson eco tank (cheap cheap ink that lasts for 2+ years but is around $400 upfront to buy) and bound with my proclick binding machine and spines, which was around $125 for both. If you don’t have an economical printer, ink is a consideration, especially with how much color this curriculum uses. A lot of people also just put the teachers guide on the tv screen and read from there…and just print student books.

Do you still use America's Story?

We don’t, but I do still have it and think it’s a wonderful history curriculum. I would probably add in some living history books if I was using Americas Story still, to make it more memorable for the kids. Gather Round just snagged my attention from how pretty it was and I generally enjoy the extra rabbit holes it takes us on although it’s a bit too wordy for these ages compared to America’s Story! If you weren’t planning to use the student pages from Gather Round (we aren’t) and are just using it as a read aloud..,America’s Story is probably just as good but way cheaper.
