US women's soccer defeat shows reactionary nihilism of the right's 'anti-wokeism' | Edge of Sports

The United States Women’s National Team was knocked out of the 2023 World Cup in the Round of 16 earlier this month. Their loss was surprising, but not necessarily shocking. What was shocking, however, was the almost orgiastic response to the loss from former President Donald Trump and right-wingers around the US, who gleefully celebrated the US team’s defeat and Megan Rapinoe’s missed kick as a victory in the reactionary war against so-called “wokeness.” As Edge of Sports host Dave Zirin argues in this “Choice Words” segment, the same people who vilify and attack trans athletes, and claim they’re doing so to defend the sanctity of women’s sports, are showing how much they also hate women’s sports and women “who dare not ‘know their place.’”

Here is a thought experiment: Imagine if the Team knelt down and refused to sing the national anthem in an international event in order to protest the gr//mr movement we have in the country where millions of children are being castrated and mutilated by the left. Would you gr//mrs still support that team? Basically, if you want everyone in the country to support you as a "national" team, you have to act like one, i.e that is represent everyone, whether you like it or not, and not just represent just side and act all surprised as the other side, more than half, does not support you.

Most likely, the corrupt owners. Fixed it to punish the ladies for their insolence. Athletes should control the sports organization and governing bodies.
@ConnorLonergan

Still trying to figure that out. Not saying the Owners are somehow benevolent and would not sabotage working athletes; it's just that the owners are making bank off these players in the end, so why bother undermining and risking the bottom line (sports teams earn more from winning.) I mean, as Dave Zinn said, the loss was not exactly unexpected, so if anything, the players will feel bad for losing, but 24 hours later (so to speak.), they will move on like nothing happened, that the loss was business as usual.

Wow ! Just wow. I absolutely love what Taya does here for freedom. That said , this is really hyperbole. It’s a hyperbolic reaction? Yes The leaps you make quite predictably to the old arguments of misogyny etc are not only flawed and illogical, but promote more division. I don’t care to watch Us women’s soccer because I’m an Mx fan and don’t watch stick and ball sports . That’s My choice to Not help promote stick and ball over Mx - when Mx has the most fit athletes in the world. We had a strong women’s Mx series for years too , died out some with Covid. The monoliths perpetuated by Both the Left and Right are damaging, but they persist. Heck I realize WNBA doesn’t make much money and NBA money supports it, but that’s the last stick and ball sport I’ve enjoyed watching. They really hustle. I’d thought this channel was about Freedom . I’ll continue to assume that and that all views are respected and given time - unless or until it’s shown otherwise.

It shows nothing of the sort. People just don't give a damn about the sport in this country. One year when I went out for baseball, a coach told me I'd be better off going into soccer, "In a couple years, it'll be bigger than football or baseball." That was in 1973.

This guy sounds like Fry from Futurama. Not apropos of anything, just an observation. Didn't know the US Women's Soccer team won equal pay, that's dope. Honestly, if we were following the model that conservatives often claim professional sports operates under--that teams ought to be compensated according to the revenue they bring in from ticket sales, merchandise, advertising, etc.--it sounds like the women's team ought to be paid more than the men's team.
@crisop-jm8cz
@crisop-jm8cz Жыл бұрын
They didn't win equal pay, you don't know because the truth was never talked about. The f'n judge threw the original case out because, guess what, they found that the women were being paid more than the men in that timeframe, under a contract that they reviewed and signed. Its f'n privilege on full f'n display.

Maybe women's soccer in the US generates similar revenue to men's. But in countries where soccer is the number one sport and mens teams are generating billions of dollars per year, it just wouldnt be possible to pay women the same. In the capitalist system players are paid based on the dollars they can generate. Would anyone suggest that women pro basketballers, footballers or baseball players be paid the same as what men currently? It may not seem fair but its just economic reality under a capitalist system.

First of all, it’s *football. Not “soccer.” The whole world calls it football, except America lol secondly, the women’s team gets paid more than the men. Lol why are we talking about this? 👀 Btw, I never hear anyone complain that women models get paid WAY more than men as part of the industry standard. But people understand that women are more in demand. The logic seems to be thrown by the wayside when women are paid less in certain industries. Maybe there’s gender bias, sure. But before we land there, how about we contextualize all the data first. Often times, the gaps are explained. And in the case of American women’s football, they’re more successful in the World Cup by all metrics than the men’s American team. But in general, the World Cup for women just hit a billi. Usually it’s in the tens of millions, whereas, for men, almost half of the world’s population watched the men’s World Cup. This is why, in the past, no one understood what the American women’s team were even talkin about. More eyes attract more ad revenue, and they already get more of a percentage of ad revenue over the men. You just don’t have as much coming in due to quantity. It’s not a non-issue

@@darrel7589 aww look at how emotion my good sis is being. The industry doesn’t matter if we’re talking about equal pay. And it is a fact that women get paid more than men in modeling. Also another fact that Asian men get paid more than white men. And Asian women are basically closing the gap with white men. Asian women also get paid more than Black and Latino men as well. You are the type to see an outcome, form a conclusion, and work backwards, finding ways of rationalizing that baseless conclusion. Makes zero sense. There’s no issue with women’s sports. I am sure you are correct about many that are celebrating this loss, for many like myself it is about focusing in sports instead of using their privilege position as a platform to advance their popularity, as it was the case with Rapinoe. I am sad they lost, but upset the soccer program is more interested in the popularity of the players they recruit, rather than their talent and willingness to represent our country with pride! She was a great player 15 years ago, and she is still good, but there are many younger players that are much better than her, that were not selected simply because of politics. She caused division in the team and ironically, she was the first to celebrate the loss she caused, laughing and making jokes about her failure to score. Most professional athletes show humility when they lose, and some are even apologetic if they recognize, they played a part in their team's defeat. I hope she leaves the sport and has a very successful career as an activist, since that seems to be her priority. Her activism became an interference and a distraction, and her dwindling talent was unable to compensate for it. Many are to blame for the teams failure to advance, but Rapinoe shares a bigger role than her fanatics are willing to admit.

I used to serve as a volunteer youth soccer coach back in the mid 90s. I grew up in a Northern major urban area where no one I knew played soccer. Nevertheless, I said then that American soccer will suffer internationally until it became a game played as pick up and youth teams in the Black communities(both African American and immigrant) and children of Central and South American immigrants get into the college and professional pipeline. There is enormous talent in these communities that remains untapped. The problem is interest and exposure. Most of our most talented kids play other sports that are viewed as more financially lucrative and accessible. It is not as great an issue in the LatinX community because soccer is prominent. But, not so in the Black community. I was actually rooting for the American women this time because the team had Black and Brown players; and I like Meagan’s views. Generally, I root for the African countries, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, and France for the same reason. The only reason why I won’t be rooting for England is because I did not like what Lauren James did to the Nigerian player. I was hoping for a non European title game.
