I was stationed on the CAMPBELL (WPG-32) out of St. George, Staten Island, NY, 2 Jan, 1956 thru June 1958 and the the old OAK (c 1921) thru Sept. 1959. The FIREBUSH (WLB-393) was also based at St. George, but she didn't work buoys. She was the Admirals private yacht. Her buoy deck was waxed and buffed on a regular basis. The rest of the crews in St. Gorge referred to her as the "WIREBRUSH" because the only work the crew did was getting rid of rust and keeping the paint shiny.....the Old Coastie QM2 (P-1) USCG.

Why was the Storis a WMEC? She has the lines of a Bouyboat, the bow, buoy deck, rounded stern etc. Only thing missing is a boom (there is a small crane below the bridge). According to google she was 230'. Gotta say she looks the part.

Ahhh the Basswood, the black sheep of the black fleet! I definitely had a hand In that monicker! We were a wild crew! Ending up in the brig for a couple hours until our commanding office had us released! Many, many times. It’s kinda what happens when a crew of 18 and 19 year old young men are cut loose where drinking alcohol was legal at 18! What in hell did they expect?!

The old steam tenders were a real education. USCGC Arbutus 1965. Staten Island, NY. a bit faster than the 180s and could lift a bit more too. Built 1932 as Lighthouse Tenders. Tom Mahan

I think that that class of tender was Old Guard, and every time we tied up near one, my heart beat with deep envy. I was on the Woodrush in the late 50s, out of Duluth MN, serving all of Lake Superior. And I do mean serving! God I loved it. Loved the Lake, and loved the Boat and loved the work. Proud to serve. Semper Paratus. A real song!
