There's a few, accelerometer, sabot, piezo (I think that was in another video), but I just find it amusing and doesn't warrant any changes. Most people don't use these words in conversations and unless you're into the military or physics/chemistry, you probably never will. I bet most non-American English speakers would mispronounce Cheyenne. Cool video though man

you mispronounced a lot of words but it's not that big of a deal. I appreciate your videos. of the words I caught, here is how I hear them pronounced the majority of the time (USA): Cheyenne/Shy-ann; piezoelectric/pe-8-zoe-electric; turbine/turr-binn (turr-byne is common, if frowned upon); fuselage/few-sell-lodge; ablative/abb-lay-tive (abb-la-tive is common); sabot/say-bow (sabb-bow is also common)

The fact we're still analyzing ALIENS some 35 years later is a testament to the impact it had on Pop Culture. I saw it twice in a row (Australia). First was a Wednesday where I'd won tickets in a newspaper competition and then on the Thursday which is always the official release day of any new movie here in Australia. I've watched it well over 200 times now and it's still an incredible movie - peerless in execution. The Dropship was always one of my favourite Sci-Fi ships because its believable and makes sense in a Military application.

As someone with a degree in Aerospace engineering, I'm amazed at the level of thought put into this design. A lot of the sci-fi elements are hand wavy and the design is not really practical, but the creators made it as practical a possible while maintaining coolness factor. Considerations like dynamic pressure, ablative surfaces, and torsion from the weapons pods are far above what I would expect from a background drop ship. I've always loved the look of the Cheyenne and its nice to know so much went into the design

@dtgs4502
@dtgs4502 3 жыл бұрын
I actually haven't watched Aliens yet and was just comparing the vehicle designs in Aliens to Halo, my favorite sci fi series even if only for music and story. Being a regular on Atomic Rockets, I could immediately tell how they actually tried to make it believable unlike Bungie with the Pelican. The wiki page had me at "variable geometry". Meanwhile Bungie is just like "haha impossibly high performance fusion engine go BRRRRRR". I'd give it a 9/10 in terms of engineering. It might be a 10 or even 11 given how it has more available information than some real military vehicles, but age hasn't worked in its favor given better materials or technology it could be using. In terms of serving a role in the military, maybe a 7/10? Having more ship side infrastructure like tethers for easier recovery makes more sense than over engineering, but military doctrine isn't perfect.

As far as cutting edge characteristics go, the Cheyenne is very modern, all it really needs are sensor pods(It supposedly has IR sensors but i can't locate them in the design), perhaps an active defense system to defeat ballistic threats, and since it's supposed to be space-worthy, small propulsion jets in all direction for complex maneuvers. Also i always found it odd that the hull, at least at the bottom, doesn't seal into a flat, smooth surface to protect it during re-entry, granted, they have future materials, but it'd be more convenient and safer to give it a smooth belly, retracting the skids up and sealing the weapon pods against the intense heat.
@Datan0de
@Datan0de 5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfrank3213 That points out something I've always thought was a mistake. It drops from the Sulaco, which was in orbit, meaning that it's coming down from orbital velocity and therefore would have to endure roughly the same reentry stresses as a Shuttle or Soyuz. However, it appears to drop like a stone the moment the moorings are released, and while they talk about hull ionization we never see any heat glow from plasma in front of the leading edges, implying that it wasn't coming down from orbit after all. Could the Sulaco have done a brake and hover maneuver to release the dropship, then accelerate back to orbital velocity? That would be really, really, really inefficient.

I've always loved that scene too, but it's completely unrealistic. If the Sulaco is in orbit, the Cheyenne would not drop like a rock. It would slowly drift away and then, under it's own power, turn around, burn its main drive to slow down to de-orbit, turn back around and then gradually drop down into the atmosphere, like current spacecraft do.

I really like your channel! Really informative and fun! Glad your around to do these. I don't think the dropship will show up again in film but I'd like to see it again. I've always thought it had some AH-64 Apache mixed in with it's design. Thanks for the good work!

I adore the dropship. Thanks for giving it the love it deserves! The Colonial Marine Technical Manual is an absolute treasure. One thing that always bothered me about the dropship though is the way the large upper pylons are situated. When deployed, you end up having the wing surface on one side positioned ahead of the wing surface on the other side. I'd think that would play hell with the aerodynamics.

Stevie Jo yeah What what they mean is loads of alarms should have gone off it have a sensor net across its skin to allow it to detect reaches scratches the one that would contaminate its ability to enter atmo, not to mention it’s weight change will affect how it performed that would be registered on sensors. the drag that she would cause as they were climbing would have been detected and more, compounding this is the fact that a android was piloting which has no excuse for not noticing.

Syd Mead famously doesn't like this Dropship design (he thinks it's too spindly). He's a magnificent visual designer, but I'm sorry, this design by Ron Cobb blows his version out of the water. So iconic, and so damn mean looking. Without doubt one of the best vehicle designs in film.

Not quite. Bricks are not hampered by the drag and torsion from two additional bricks mounted on long arms extended perpendicular to the direction of flight. This ship has the aerodynamics of a fire truck with its ladder extended. By the way, where does the lift come from? Even VTOL jets have proper wings. Verisimilitude is a strength of this movie, but the drop ship is one exception. Very cool to look at but one of the films rare details that strain credulity.

@Robert Logan I think that's why, as a child, the movies scared me so much. The technology looked so familiar and accessible. Not only that but obviously what scared me the most was the Xenomorph, but the environs in which the first two movies took place made the monsters accessible, and terrified a young boy so badly he couldn't look out of windows at night for weeks after. Now nothing Hollywood has made since has terrified me as deliciously as those first two movies of the Alien franchise.

I definitely would love to see another film with the UD-4L "Cheyenne" featured in full effect. Something that has always intrigued me about the UD-4L is that it very similar to the Hunter-Killer ships Cameron uses in the first Terminator film. Had the franchised not been ruined by subsequent failures by other directors, and had Cameron maintained control of its direction, I tend to believe we might have seen a Terminator versus Aliens franchise crop up in addition to, or instead of, the Predator v. Aliens mess we've had to endure. If you think about it, Terminators would be the best and only way to fight Aliens had they somehow reached earth. The concept of Terminators being used as autonomous droids to fight Aliens could last for decades before Skynet defeats the Aliens. After that is when Skynet decides humans need to be exterminated as well for having the arrogance to bring Aliens to earth in the first place via Wayland Industries.
