I always do flat rate shipping. Once in a while I end up having to pay a little extra for shipping but typically not. Like you said, after you have listed so many items, you just know. I try to be very considerate of my customers and keep shipping costs as low as possible. I know I hate high shipping fees as a buyer. I never thought of standardizing a system like you have. So you aren't talking about the USPS Flat Rate envelopes or boxes, just your own system of pre-decided charges for various items based on your experience. Not a bad idea if you consistently ship clothing etc and not breakables. I'm still a newbie, so I was a bit confused on the "flat rate" term.

Many years ago when I was just selling my own unwanted items, I was burned by underestimating shipping costs so I definitely didn't want that happening again now that I am getting into this in a bigger way! I had been able to figure out a lot and I am still only at 140 listings so I continue to weigh things in order to learn as you recommended. I am focusing on clothes and already noticing patterns in weight so that is helpful. I had been confused about the ebay shipping policy options so I really appreciate you explaining this. I also had a lightbulb moment when you singled out clothes and consumer expectations regarding shipping in that category. I need to review my listings. I had suspected I have an issue there. Lastly, I think it is a disservice now that ebay's new template does not show the estimated shipping cost while you are doing the listing. I used to be able to review that and instantly see if I thought it was "out of line" with the cost or expectation of my item. That is no longer the case as it is invisible. But your info was very helpful and increases my confidence with my choices. Great Stuff!!

Thanks j, as long as everybody realizes that they’re really was no difference between the obsolete 1st class rate, and the updated ground advantage… As much as I personally hate to make changes to our methodologies, business practices, etc. with eBay, because there’s so many moving parts, and one thing affects the other, vice versa, especially with regards to your pricing and markdowns and promotions, etc. strategies, AND as much as I wanna recoup a few dollars on postage, especially with the cheaper/ low asp items Like T-shirts, hats, etc., this might be what we need to do going into the new year. Across-the-board, very good video. Have to watch it a couple more times. Thanks for all you do. PS, it’s interesting that you unequivocally state that the buyer doesn’t want to pay such and such, as if they’re fully aware of the different shipping options, cost, etc.… This is an ongoing argument between my wife and myself, and I think there are some finer points to it but yes, you’ve jogged my thought process significantly. I’m willing to take a risk, even if it cost us money to try to save the time that the premise of your video is based around.

Thanks for the great videos. I just sold an item that I had selected USPS parcel select ground advantage with a flat rate of $4.87 for a 6oz. package. Ebay wants to charge $9.80 from Cali to NC…I went to pirate ship and it cost me $4.44 for First class…I think we will have to adjust our flat rate shipping Once parcel select ground advantage is our only option on July 9th.

I do get confused about this one thing though; I have learned the hard way that the actual weight may not be the issue but the dimensions of the package. I sold a set packaged in the original box of some Disney squish, mellows small size. I waited on my scale, gave me a certain amount, so I figured out what to charge, but I ended up having to refund the buyer for more postage because of the size of the package not the weight

Is there any way to go back to the default set up where you can enter the flat shipping cost from listing to listing? I really hate the policy concept. The annoying part about it is trying to calculate the weight including the boxes and packaging when creating the listing. Different items have different weight and different orders have differ packing styles. Having to find a box and weigh it out before listing is a way slower and more tedious process than before

How are you Shipping remotes and mouses under 8 oz? Bubble wrap polybag? Boxes themselves way a few oz.

Why don’t you use USPS GROUND SELECT PARCEL? I use it for anything over a pound. It’s less expensive than my UPS Store charges. It gives you tracking but no insurance. I usually insure anything with a value over $100 for a few dollars. I’ve never had any problems.

My 3rd eBay sale… I charged 14.99 flat rate shipping and the package went to Puerto Rico. It ended up being $46 for shipping. My box was 18x12x6. I’m going with calculated shipping for now. Any insights?

So your not shipping international? Flat rate works fine for domestic but when you start defining International that wont work. Because you cant use calculated now since your item is defined as a policy that is a flat rate item. So how are people going to get accurate calculations for International? You cant tell Intl its a flat rate either. Because that depends on LBS and how heavy it is.

I thought I read that you must use a flat rate branded box or envelope for flat rate shipping, but didn’t I see you put that Taco Bell shirt into your own poly mailer and adhere a flat rate label o to it? The issue isn't smaller items, but freight items. When I try and set a flat rate with freight, it always comes up with some outlandish amount. For an example, I am a copier dealer and I sell Office Machines online.(full sized copiers) and one of the people watching my item was nice enough to tell me it had a shipping rate of $1,395! Which is not true! I had Freight set and then flat rate of $279. What is highly frustrating for me is I can't unlink the ebay postal accounts from my listings. I do not want ebay involved in my shipping process at all. I just want it to be a flat rate. I scowered KZfaq for this information and could not find it. You were the closest thing I found when it comes to Flat Rate Shipping.
