Use the Entire Width

Күн бұрынI was recently asked the question, "Can you use the entire width of the loom?". Yes! And, you absolutely should. Please, please use every bit of your gorgeous loom!
However, if you haven't tried it yet, I have a few elements to watch for - the size of the reed, your extra heddles, and those sneaky warp yarns at the very edge of your project.

My heddle frame is 23 1/2”. My reed is 22 1/4” Thinking of trying a 3d printed reed a bit bigger. I took some of my heddles off but still had to many, great idea about sliding an empty one in between. Thanks

Watch your edges? I have two spring clamps that I put on the back beam to keep the warp from sliding off the warp sticks that I use for the separation of the warp.

I'm planning my first project on my "new to me" 4 shaft Nilus Leclerc loom which happens to have a 60 inch weaving width. I've taken the time to count ALL my heddles and group them into bundles of 50 and have divided them evenly on both sides as well as marked the center point on the reed and beater bar. I'm currently in the process of winding the warp for it. My only problem is how to dress this beast (AKA Big Bertha)! I'm not sure which will be easier front to back or back to front. I want to use her entire width and this will be her first project. Yes I'm a bit intimidated by her but my daughter got her for me and I promised the first project on it would go to my daughter... which just so happens to want a large throw blanket. I feel like I've bitten off more than I can chew. Any suggestions on how to dress her and should I break (group) the warp into smaller sections as I'm winding it on the warping board and take each sect to the loom? Any advice would greatly be appreciated

Hi Tammi!! Congratulations on the loom! That's so exciting!!! 60" is big! Yes, I would definitely break up your warp on the warping board. Maybe (3) sections of 20" each? That'll be nice math. Just make sure you mark how they fit with each other! As for dressing the loom, I do front-to-back. So, sley your reed, then thread the heddles, then wind it on, and you'll be good to go! If you get stuck at any point, just let me know! You can do it!!!!

Thank you so much! What I forgot to mention is that my daughter picked out the yarns she wanted used which just so happens to be size 10 crochet cotton thread in 6 different colors. So in order to make sure it has enough drape and not such a super tight weave, I'm thinking 5 colors at 12epi on a 12 dent reed and weave with color 6. I do have a color plan charted out on graph paper and marking every 12 threads as 1 inch increments on the warp. Hopefully I don't mess the chain up as I'm trying to chain it off the warping board. Great question! I inherited those from someone associated with a mill. But I'll probably never use it all. So I typically recommend smaller amounts.

Ack! I didn’t mean to dislike! Finger troubles! I have a question! What’s the best strategy when you can’t move heddles across the middle? There is a wire for hanging that I can’t get the heddles past. So heddles on the left side are stuck on the left. Do you recommend threading from the middle out? In my first project, I have a few warp strings that have a slight bend in them, because I thought I could slide heddles all the way over, but I can’t. Any help you can give is much appreciated! 😀

Hi Teresa! On my jack loom, I have little clips in the middle, making it tricky to move the heddles, too! So I completely understand! Yes, I usually thread the heddles starting in the middle. But I dress the loom from front-to-back. So my reed is already sleyed by the time I sit down to attack the heddles. It's easier to determine the middle when you can see the entire project in the reed. I'm not sure how best to advise you if you dress the loom starting at the back. Let me know if that's your approach! If so, I have some friends I can ask to see how they tackle it!

@@ActonCreative I do it from front to back too. Seeing the warp threads in the reed seems to help keep them in order (as does the crossover)! So, ya… I think I can figure it out next time! Thank you! 😀

I don't know if you had any replies for your problem with the middle wire on your shaft bars. Most looms allow you to release the wire so you can release, slide heddles around and then put the wire back on.
