In today's manga piracy discussion, I take a look at a long-discussed comparison between buying used manga and reading scanlated manga. It's been widely discussed in the manga collecting community, and more recently, have been the subject of many manga KZfaq videos here in our little MangaTube community. The comparison is often made between used manga and scanlated pirated manga because buying used doesn't directly support the creator. I dived into my thoughts on this and why it matters for the manga industry and manga community.
This video is in response to EastCoastManga's video about used manga: • Used Manga Doesn't Sup...

Great video! I think mentioning Libraries is a great point

I buy used and new manga and use my library REALLY heavily, because they all support the idea that manga is labor that needs to be compensated for. Plus, lots of people reading manga at libraries means the libraries are going to buy more manga, and then more people will be exposed to manga because of that, etc etc. Plus, lots of libraries even let you request titles for them to buy if they don’t have it already! I was only able to read Levius Est because I sent in an online thing saying I was interested, which was super cool.

That's a good point I never considered about libraries! I've always donated old copies of manga I never wanted, so I assumed that's how a bulk of libraries kind of worked -- I never considered they'd actually purchase new copies as well.

Couldn't agree more. Plus taking a punt on a couple of second hand volumes probably means at some point (if you enjoyed it) that you'll be picking up more of that series and i bet those volumes will more than likely be new. Especially, if the series is ongoing and has new volumes coming out

I got the French Version of YuYu Hakusho Volume 1 from my birth year 1997 and it’s one of my personal most precious acquisitions. It’s out of print for a long time and the text is so old school and the general feel of it is retro-cool. If I had to say why I like to look at second hand stores for Manga it’s for that reason. It’s just something else when you find a 20+ year old manga in decent condition and read it. I got that one for 3,5€ but wouldn’t sell it to anyone. When I read it, for those who know the story, I remember me when I was 16+ and questioned if I would be missed if I faded out of existence. I can think and dream about what would have become out of me had I given manga a shot all those years back and seen the story of YuYu Hakusho Vol 1. When I open it, I feel at ease, the cover as well as the feeling of the manga is giving hope to those who need it

The other point of note to mention is that used manga has already been purchased. The contribution to the industry has already been made, so buying it used really shouldn't be a problem. Its the same as buying a used game and second hand clothes. I buy used manga a lot, and I agree with you on the point that someone how buys used manga is likely to buy it new as well. Interesting vid man

I completely agree- wait. Are those Light Novels on your shelf? Tbh this has been a weird one for me. I'm not in a position where I feel that I need to buy used. But I know there are a fair few people buying used who may buy like 1 volume out of 20 used. I usually just donate my old manga to a local library. Is this the same as someone uploading a scan? hmm

I have a manga collection of a little over 300 volumes right now (mostly through heavy sales on box sets), though I do read scans occasionally for old long-running series that may be decades away from getting an official english release, as well as old failed and canceled series that never got more than a chapter or two, those can be quite interesting as resources of what not to do, especially for myself being an aspiring comicbook artist. And as for the manga that were lucky enough to eventually get english releases (jojo as an example, but hoping hard for hajime no ippo and baki the grappler in english), I do make sure to buy every volume. I've every jojo volume up to part 3, along with rohan at the louvre and manga in theory and practice, and will certainly bulk buy part 4 when it's completed. Never donated to scanlators, never will, that'd be absurd, and adblock is always on ofcourse.

As a consumer of used manga for cheaper from legal ways such as going to a secondhand store (I.E. Bull Moose Music) I usually prefer support local businesses and I usually prefer buying things and owning it instead of being a part of the part of something like being a part of a subscription service where they're taking money instead of giving back to the artists

@UchuuShelf
@UchuuShelf 3 жыл бұрын
I try not to advocate for using scans, especially because so many people reading scans unintentionally support scanlators and aggregators when online scan sites have plethoras of ads and even bitcoin miners built into the sites. At the end of the day, if it's 100% not licensed, go for it -- but throw an adblock on. And if you're financially able to, try to import a copy of the manga you read on scans from Japan / another country that has licensed it, so at least some modicum of income goes back to the creator!

I think pretty much everything said he is just common sense. Nothing really wrong buying used manga even if it doesn't directly help the industry. I think any time I end up reading stuff online I end up buying the physical copy at some point and typically initially come across it at the library.

On the point that scans don’t benefit the industry at all, I disagree. For example, Komi would not be doing nearly as well for Viz if it weren’t for the massive fandom created by scans.

@@neby_nebs I'm not sure about that, the english release of komi-san can't communicate seems to be doing pretty great abroad. Even if the people reading scans don't support the official release, their huge word of mouth might influence a lot of people to buy volumes. I remember a while back when komi-san became huge on twitter and then i started seeing a bunch of people with komi in their shelves.

Used Manga was once purchased at retail value, thus providing the author of said manga compensation for that unit. The author doesn't deserve endless compensation for one copy(one physical book) sold.

Hi, I totaly agree with your opinion. The used manga is normal aftermarket sale and is clear that it is not supporting the industry. On the other hand the scanlations is the case when these sites directly breaks the author rights and profits from it.

1. Haul = a purchase 2. My followers purchased most of it so I uploaded so my subs could have chance to buy it. 3. All the manga sold was for $4 or under per volume lol. I’ve said multiple times I buy and sell used manga all the time. I do my part by buying new manga every once in awhile but overall a lot of what I buy is used these days because of insane deals.

Also public libraries buy copies of manga with tax money, so imagine how many libraries are available in the US! For example, there are about 9,000 public libraries so imagine that 1/2 of those places buys a copy of a manga, that means over 4k copies sold!!! That can be a big deal for some publishers because some people don't have the money now, but will definitely buy the series later. That's how I think that Junji Ito series sell really well because people who read it eventually buy a copy for themselves later on so they can keep rereading it and having it in their collection.

But by no means am I trying to say it isn't wrong.

I wish you elaborated more on the math about someone buying used vs scanlations. The used market is a much more sustainable "problem" vs piracy. Scanlations can be sustained with one $10 purchase feeding 1,000 readers while 500 readers selling their used copy to another 500 in the used market later on at least netted the company $5,000 dollars initially. Piracy is such a crippling issue past morality, its literally a cancer.

i'm a scanlator myself and i gotta say i'm kind of offended lol. your whole argument against scanlation is based on the presumption that for one, every scanlation group only does shonenshit, two, every scanlation group takes donations and three that every scanlation group is a speedgroup senselessly racing with official releases. neither applies to me or my group. we exclusively work on titles that would have been inaccessible to anyone else in english were it not for us. we in no way want to harm anyone's sales of legit volumes and I don't believe that that's what we are doing. were any of the projects we are working on to get licensed we'd instantly stop translating it, however not before shilling the fuck out of it with all our means. in an ideal world, where more niche titles saw english translations and the anglophone manga market wasn't reduced to mostly the same shit over and over again, we wouldn't exist, but that's not the world we're living in. also, take a step back and think whether "japanimation" or "anime comics" would have been such a large thing in the west in the first place where it not for the first fansubs and unlicensed translations in the 70s.
@UchuuShelf
@UchuuShelf 3 жыл бұрын
So I actually agree with you. The type of work your specific scan group sounds like it's doing is probably the only type of scanlation I could agree with. The groups I mainly gripe with are the shonen ones you mentioned, and the ones that endlessly shill their patreon and whatnot. It's the ones that beg for money while offering up a mangakas work for free (especially for series already licensed) that bother me the most. There have been very few cases of publishers not licensing something because of piracy (for example Vertical ignoring most Jiro Matsumoto work and releasing Velvet and Mandela instead) but I couldn't in good faith hold that against any scan group. Hope that clears this up! I shouldve been clearer in the video.

I had a friend that read scans and I don't care as long as we get to discuss the serie is fine by me. Im guessing you might be younger or have not invested in this off thing but its more then "who cares, get the cheapest option". Its a question about morals and thinking about the bigger picture(supporting the industry). If everyone was like your friend reading scans there would be almost no manga. People wanna sustain the industry they love and discuss about it. But you might learn that later on.
