Some fun etymology and details of some characters: Ryu's name in Japanese literally means "Dragon". Sagat practices a style of Muay Thai themed after tigers (a reference to Thai mythology). In Chinese folklore dragons and tigers are considered rivals, representing opposing sides of Yin and Yang (crouching tiger, hidden dragon). The Japanese word "Ryūko" (龍虎) is assembled from the characters for tiger (虎) and dragon (龍) and literally means "fierce rivals". The Japanese word for fist is "Ken". Ryu (the dragon) has stronger fireballs, while Ken (the fist) has stronger uppercuts. Dan's uppercut "Koryuken" (晃龍拳, or "Brilliant Dragon Fist") is clearly based off of the Shoryuken (rising dragon fist), but the animation is visiually closer to Sagat's "Tiger Uppercut". The Japanese kanji for tiger "虎" can be pronounced both as "とら" (tora) or "こ" (ko). Because 晃 and 虎 are pronounced the same, you could interpret koryuken as meaning "tiger dragon fist" which is roughly equivalent to "Ryūko no Ken" (Fist of Fierce Rivals). This would not only be a reference to Dan's one-sided rivalry with Sagat (possibly copying the move from Sagat as a means to defeat him), but also a reference to "Art of Fighting", which is known as "Ryūko no Ken" in Japan.

In 3rd Strike Oro has red eyes like Akuma but they also glint blue, implying that he has mastery of both Satsui no Hado and the power of nothingness and relies on both simultaneously, which in turn hints that the ideal state of mind for fighting is a cohesion of both, this is reinforced by Gill's theme of opposing forces working together. I absolutely love this detail about 3rd strike, it has real merit concerning competitive games like this and other types of competitions, basically keeping a clear head makes it easier to analyze and see what's going on but having the drive to win is just as important.
@adre2194

Oro's art is called "senjutsu", which is supposedly one of the most advanced and rigorous techniques to learn. He also has incredibly advanced knowledge and mastery of ki, which grants him the ability to use basically any form of hado or other fireball magic he likes, as they all derive from the same source. I entirely agree on your other point, though. Naturally I play at my worst when I'm angry and distracted and better when I'm calm and focused, but I arguably play at my best when I'm "dry angry" and in this proper state of focused bloodlust. I even used the same satsui no hado + mu no ken analogy when I came up with this a few years back.

It feels like Dan tried to skip straight to master level with his fireballs, partly because he wanted to rush to get revenge, and partly because his training was cut short by Gouken. Sakura is an example of someone trying to learn the Shoto arts the right way, and succeeding at it.

@That Frosty Ape Dan's father's name is Go Hibiki ;) That recollection of his background is otherwise on point though. Another very likely reason he throws fireballs with one hand is indicative of his personality: because he has a delusional level of self confidence. If throwing fireballs with one hand is a sign of further mastery of them (as is evidenced by almost every canonically top tier character throwing them one-handed), it makes sense that Dan would think himself above using two hands. His inflated sense of self worth doesn't allow him to see that his fireballs are trash because of it haha. It's totally "Dan" to think that he can jump right into one-handed fireballs and skip the basics, because that's basically what Saikyou-ryu is; Dan has the base of Go Hibiki's fighting style that he was taught from a young age, but otherwise he essentially added Ansatsuken and Muay Thai to Saikyou-ryu without actually having any technical mastery of even the basics. He's just mimicking what he's seen. Adding techniques to your style can totally make it better, but not when you don't actually know how to do those techniques properly haha.

On the topic of Dan's fireballs, it's simply because he has poor form, not because he's a weak hado user. Dan has THE most powerful (Uncharged) basic fireballs out of the the entire cast (With a damage of 70 over the average 60). The fact that they dissipate due to poor form can be surmised from Oni's fireballs dissipating: Oni is Akuma overcome with violent intent, and therefore doesn't think as much during a fight. If anything, Dan might (potentially) be the most powerful hado user, unless what he's doing is substituting range for power in his fireballs without realizing, although Oni's fireballs still only hit for 60 damage. In either case, he's up to snuff when it comes to weird energy abilities.

RoosterCogburnPhD nah he definitely has the weakest hado, he can't even sustain the satsui no hado after tripping over a *b a c k p a c k* Also the base damage for a fireball is 70 (i.e. Ryu and Ken), not 60
@murlokabram8380
@murlokabram8380 6 жыл бұрын
I actually think that might have to do more with his outlook on life rather than any form of weakness. The Satsui no Hado in the comics (Where this happens) is less of something just Ryu and Akuma have its something *everyone* Has, Sakura uses a it a bit, Its implied Sagats scar kinda gives him a similar hate boost. Dan is too goofy to actually sustain that hateful outlook. (At least, that's partly how the comics portrayed it.) Dan had potential he wasted. I mean his dad was the guy who took out Sagat's eye. season 5 of SFV added a bicycle kick to Ken's moves, which shows us where Sean got it from. Obviously, he could also have learned from Laura but we all know he abandoned her Jiu Jitsu in favor of Ken's version of Ansatsuken. Speaking of kicks, it's interesting to see how Sakura and Sean have adapted the tatsumaki technique for themselves. Sean has a much easier time staying airborne but has to use both legs in order to hit the opponent multiple times while Sakura can score multiple hits while barely staying airborne and sometimes even doing so on the ground so she can do more damage, as seen with her SFIV super. This might be due to their difference in martial arts training before learning Ansatsuken, since Sean was already learning Jiu Jitsu and Sakura knew nothing of martial arts prior to getting to know Ryu

That's a good comparison. How I see it is that Sean (in SF3) and Sakura (in SF4) are actually equally skilled. However, the difference is their strengths and weaknesses. Sean has power-he does know some Matsuda Jiu-Jutsu (which is largely grappling), and his overall damage is actually pretty good, even in 3S. The problem is that Sean lacks technique. He can't properly do a Tatsu, he has to use brute force with both legs to stay airborne. Sakura is the opposite. Neither she or Sean have formal training, but Sakura learned directly from Ryu. Her weakness is strength. She's not as physically strong, both due to small size and inexperience. As such, she can do a proper Tatsu, but the lack of strength means she can't stay airborne as long. Another example is their Hadokens. Sean can't consistently do a Hadoken, but when he does, it's always powerful (a super). Sakura can do a consistent Hadoken, but it's weaker than Ryu’s because it dissipates.

This is awesome, you really should keep going with videos like this. A lot of people in the FGC are quick to bark at people who give a shit about SF's lore, but it really can be interesting and it makes connecting to your main a lot more fun, at least in my opinion. Something I think is interesting; Ryu's normals and fireballs are so powerful because he is so synchronized with his own willpower. However, despite Dan's fireballs being so short-ranged, they actually do even greater damage than Ryu's, implying that perhaps Dan has an even stronger connection to his inner will. Ed borrows stuff from his Mentor Balrog (Such as Psycho Knuckle/Dash Straight, Psycho Swing/Turn Punch) while also mixing it up by pouring psycho power like Bison does, indicating a bit that he’s closer towards being corrupted by Bison since it’s shown in some material that Psycho power corrupts people the more they use it (It’s why Nash suspects that he along with his team should be exterminated, then again that might’ve been his rage talking). Menat in the other hand uses a unique style while borrowing stuff from Rose, her teacher while nothing indicates on any sort of corruption happening. Actually, Ed’s story is played more serious and depressing while Menats is played more light hearted.

Always liked picking up these types of things across the SF series. When Dan first debuted he was a lot more of a subtle jab at Ryo and Robert, and even though he wasn't the best, he wasn't framed as an inferior joke character. By SF4 they were all in on it, and that's why he shares so many more similarities with them and it at his silliest. I haven't seen the video about him learning Muay Thai, but I remember even back to his debut noticing that his some of his kicks were more similar to Sagat's than other shotos, and the word was initially that Go Hibiki was a Muay Thai fighter like Sagat so that was Dan's base, and in order to separate himself from the art that led to his father's death he went to learn ansatsuken and was banished by Gouken because of his vengeful motives. The other theory was that his base was similar to the style of shotos (especially since the depictions of Go that would come out showed him wearing a gi like the shotos), and he learned Muay Thai along the way to pick up Sagat's techniques to better best him. In either scenario he was rejected by Gouken for his motives and used what he had learned there combined with some Muay Thai and his original karate base to ultimately create the Saikyou-Ryu.

Ryu’s Focus Attack isn’t exactly lore accurate due to timing, but it’s a reference to his Kaze no Ken technique he develops on the Ryu Final manga (which happens after 3S). It kinda breaks the lore but it’s a nice nod. The manga is sick btw, well worth reading.

Ryu donkey kick kick looks similar to Gokuen focus attack, but only at first glance. In fact, Gokuen performs side kick (basically stand with his side forward , rises leg and throw it sideways), while Ryu performs like a fusion of turning back kick (basically, tour your back to opponent, bend you knee and throw it straight behind you) and wheel kick (also turn your back, but use horizontal turning momentum to perform a kick). Three kinda similar, but distinct kick. Also, in SFV Ryu drops turning his back and just does sidekick, just like Gokuen. Then again we are speaking about the game where grappling is reduced to throws and major part of game is throwing fireballs, so I'm not supprised creators are not fighters themself.

When you compare Urien and Gill, their moves are very similar but their input for doing special moves show what kind of characters they are and establish their fighting prowess. Urien needs to charge for his special moves, implying he needs to focus to perform special moves, most likely due to his short temper. Gill can however perform his moves effortlessly with a motion input. When Urien is blocking in 3s, there is a distinct metallic sound heard compared to the rest of the cast when blocking. This metallic sound isn't heard in V (implying progress?)
@pacman10124
@pacman10124 3 жыл бұрын
You're almost right, but SFV actually takes place _before_ the events of SF3 and 3rd strike, so it's more than likely just an oversight The metallic sound might have just been a means to communicate that Urien, though appearing human, was ultimately another weapon created by The Secret Society
@arcfieri5965
@arcfieri5965 Жыл бұрын
@@pacman10124 it also likely has to do with how urien seems to have a constant metallic coating using his magnetic powers, while in sfv he needs to use a vskill mid match to get that and it dissipates once he uses his tackle once.

You know, Dan really had the potential, more than most. He could have surpassed Akuma if he really tried, in the comics he could use Satsui no Hado (But he couldn't control it), his 2 handed fireballs are so strong they knock him off his feet (Not controlling it) and Dankukyaku is surprisingly effective, he just had the worst luck ever, when he rough Rufus in the comic and it bunced off Rufus's big belly. He even made his own Version of raging demon, the Otoko Michi. I thin the reason Dan explodes, is that he tries to do all the rapid hits of the raging demon, but he think they just happen if you strain hard enough, and then he explodes. It even takes priority over the Raging Demon itself in MVC2. All I'm saying is if Dan put in some effort, tried to control himself better, and used proper techniques, he would've been the strongest fighter to ever live. Although he may suffer in these things, he does do some things better then even Ryu. He apparently has more durability, as zangief said- "I toss you around like rag doll... yet you stand again. I admire your heart." Implying Dan was one of the only who could stand again after getting hit with Zangief's Ultra Throws. He also developed a defensive technique in "Saikyo Defense" Which he has in Alpha 3 and USF4 Omega. In A3 he also has an air throw, which Ryu and Ken do not.
@VolutoEighto
@VolutoEighto 2 жыл бұрын
This is also supported by the fact that Dan gets even stronger in SFV, having his own version of Denjin State, having more range on his fireballs, and being able to control Haoh gadoken effectively, even making it as strong as to inflict wall bounce when charged.

I liked the way that POTS made the Otoko Michi in MUGEN; a great charge of energy so destructive, it injured Dan even moreso than the opponent The consensus is that the Saikyo style is one of the strongest fighting styles, but Dan’s use of pretend Ansatsuken unintentionally holds him back, which is why Dankicks are his redeeming factor in 4, red fireball in 5 only comes out randomly, and why he was so hecking wack in Omega (command grab, divekick, EWGF, etc.) And of course, everyone brings up how Kage’s normals and move properties are taken moreso from Dan in 4, showing how destructive a “perfected” Saikyo could be

Hi Bafael, Here are some points you may want to mention if you do this type of video again. #1. Makoto's dash punch is performed by the fighter on the China Wall stage in SF1. #2. Sakura's Tatsus angles downwards like Ryu/Ken's SF1 Tatus. #3. Balrog's TAP damage output equals the amount of damage Mike outputs with his Normals in SF1. Consider: When Hakan performs a back Throw he positions body in a way that hides his thumb being inserted into his opponent's anus as mentioned in the Turkish Oil Wrestling documentary available on KZfaq. Hakan was created as a representation of the world champion of that time.

My personal favourite is Ryu's jumping medium punch, which hits twice. This is a move he's had since SFA. Akuma has it too, since in SFA his moveset was basically an amalgamation of all the best shoto normals. Gouken was introduced in SSF4 and guess what, j.MP hits twice - presumably this was his move originally. And now in SFV, Sagat now has the same move! It's a great bit of plot: Sagat has gone from hating Ryu to grudging respect, and now he's straight-up emulating him. Ryu learned it from Gouken; Sagat learned it from Ryu.

I just remembered another personal speculation of mine. In SF1, Ryu has red hair, while in all subsequent appearances it's black, otherwise everything is seemingly as normal in his appearance. In SF4, Evil Ryu's 3rd color scheme is the same as Ryu's in SF1. Considering how in the canon, Ryu momentarily changed into Evil Ryu to deliver the finishing illegal shoryuken upon Sagat which gave him his scar, I'm left with the impression that perhaps by later games it is implied that in SF1 you are actually playing as Evil Ryu.

Here’s some real Dan lore: Dan is so incredibly versed in martial arts he has to hold himself back every time he performs a move. The reason Gadoken seems so pitiful is because he’s dialing it down so that he doesn’t kill his opponent when he uses it. We can see a vision of Dan’s true strength when he uses Haoh Gadoken. He accidentally unleashes 5% of his normal power, and in his weakened stance, it throws him off and tosses him to the other side of the screen.

an interesting detail with Dan is that the joke of him being a parody of Ryo and Robert was also aknowledged by SNK. In SNK Vs Capcom Chaos, Terry unintentionally mistakes Dan for Robert, and in KoF 2000, Robert has a secret striker mode (called Another Robert) that sees him wearing a white Gi and acting similarly to Dan (plus, using the second palette with Ryo will see Robert use a pink colored Gi, just like Dan's). In Capcom Vs SNK 2, Dan have a secret intro againts Yuri, referencing the fact he have the same cheery and happy go lucky attitude as her. In Street Fighter V they made him deal more damage by having him using original moves instead of the parodied ones, wich is mostly self-awareness of re-using the same moves rather than just a parody on SNK.
