See my latest experiments and behind-the-scenes footage!
For this holiday season, let’s see if we can use the power of air and Lego to generate electricity to power a small Christmas tree!
This little Lego contraption consists of two main technologies: A pneumatic engine, which runs on compressed air, and a generator, which produces a small current when driven.
In this video, we’ll use the Lego single-cylinder pneumatic engine to drive the Lego generator. The torque from the engine isn’t amazing, but let’s see if it can produce around a watt of power so that we can light the fairy lights on the Christmas tree.

No such thing as a silly or failed experiment. We both learned something from this.

Very true, a fail is still a win for sure. And cheers for the support 😄

hey jamie! absolutely love your work! to reduce the vibrations on the engine, it could be very cool to try and make an opposed piston system like real diesel generators have, you basically only have to mirror the current design, no phase offset or anything just mirror the thing on the piston's horizontal axis

Cheers for tut suggestion! I'll for sure be doing some videos on better and more powerful pneumatic engines! I like the idea of a simple mirror of this design though - will give it a try, thanks!

this is such a cool idea especially with how Christmas eve is tomorrow and how you love making generators!

you should try to build some sort of regulator, so rather than a spike and trailling, you get a more constant pressure output, and in theory a longer run time.

You could come back to this project using lubricated and more efficent pistons and valves. If yiu can make a V8 tank- air engine, you should be able to power the custom light for the lord of the ring set .. (maybe without the set !) 😅

Haha that'd be a cool use case for it 😁 And for sure, a powerful pneumatic piston engine is on my agenda. My dream would be to do a collab with Green Gecko and put some of his powerful pneumatic engines to the test with a nice beefy generator

Hmm why not tried parallel staters (double coil inputs)?
@JamiesBrickJams

I've tried that a fair bit in the past and it doesn't really increase overall output much. It increases the frequency, but at the same time it introduces more electromagnetic drag, reducing the output of each 'pulse'. So in the end, the difference isn't much. Of course there are still other things that can be improved! Mainly turning it into a good 3 phase generator

Not a bad idea! Perhaps on an upgraded version I'll use some silicone on the axles and other moving bits too
